On August 24 and 25th , AD 79, Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii, Italy, erupted spewing deadly ash, stones and toxic fumes in the air. Many citizens did not flee. Extreme temperatures are blamed for the deaths of the citizens of Pompeii. They were covered with ash and pumice and were preserved until serious excavation began in the 1700. This disaster gave us much insight into the lives of these ancient people.

First, the location of the site of the disaster will be shown.

The stage is set: A simple street in ancient Pompeii shows a large volcano in the background. A mother and child are strolling down the street enjoying the day. The narrator describes the scene.

The narrator explains what is happening in Pompeii. The earth trembles slightly and ashbegins to spew from Mt. Vesuvius. The characters take little notice as this is a commonoccurrence.

The inhabitants continue their journey but stop to look at the volcano. The narrator willdescribe the scene from the perspective of Pliny the Younger who was observing the eruption.

"On 24 August, in the early afternoon, my mother drew [my uncle's] attention to a cloud of unusual size and appearance. its general appearance can be best expressed as being like an umbrella pine, for it rose to a great height on a sort of trunk and then split off into branches, I imagine because it was thrust upwards by the first blast and then left unsupported as the pressure subsided, or else it was borne down by its own weight so that it spread out and gradually dispersed. Sometimes it looked white, sometimes blotched and dirty, according to the amount of soil and ashes it carried with it."

The eruption continues but it is too late for the mother and child who have breathed in the toxic air. They begin to cough and stumble.

The mother and child fall to the ground, dead, as a result of the toxic fumes. As they fall the mother rests her arm under her child. They begin to be covered with the hot ash.

The city is covered with ash. Pompeii will be buried until excavation begins in the late 1700s.
