A S tory about two pebbles

Over photos of China!

Page 2: Storyofthetwopebbles

The difference between logical thoughts and “lateral” thoughts.

Page 3: Storyofthetwopebbles

There was once in a small village a farmer who owed an important sum of money due to be repaid to a very ugly old man.

Page 4: Storyofthetwopebbles

The farmer had a very pretty daughter that the old lender was sweet on,

the lender proposed a deal:

Page 5: Storyofthetwopebbles

He said he would annul the debt if he could marry his daughter

Page 6: Storyofthetwopebbles

.Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified about this proposition

Page 7: Storyofthetwopebbles

So, the old lender suggested hazard should determine the outcome of his proposition.

Page 8: Storyofthetwopebbles

He told them he would put two pebbles one black and one white in an empty money bag,

Page 9: Storyofthetwopebbles

And, the daughter would pick, without looking …

Page 10: Storyofthetwopebbles

One of the two pebbles.

Page 11: Storyofthetwopebbles

1) If she picks a black one, she must marry me And the debt to her father is eliminated…..

Page 12: Storyofthetwopebbles

2) If she picks the white pebble, she doesn’t have to marry me and the debt is also eliminated

Page 13: Storyofthetwopebbles

3) If she refuses to pick a pebble, her father will go to jail

Page 14: Storyofthetwopebbles

While speaking, the old lender leaned forward and picked up two pebbles.

Page 15: Storyofthetwopebbles

As he was picking them up, the daughter with a sharp eye…

Page 16: Storyofthetwopebbles

Noticed he had picked up two black pebbles and put them in the money bag

Page 17: Storyofthetwopebbles

But, she said nothing.

Page 18: Storyofthetwopebbles

The old lender asked the daughter to pick a pebble out of the bag

Page 19: Storyofthetwopebbles

This discussion was taking place on the road in front of the farmer’s house and the road was paved with pebbles

Page 20: Storyofthetwopebbles

Imagine for an instant what you would have done.

Page 21: Storyofthetwopebbles

What would you have suggested the daughter to do?

Page 22: Storyofthetwopebbles

If we analyse the situation, there are 3 possibilities :

Page 23: Storyofthetwopebbles

1) The daughter refuses to pick a pebble

Page 24: Storyofthetwopebbles

2) The daughter picks out both pebbles revealing the old lender cheated

Page 25: Storyofthetwopebbles

3) The daughter picks out a black pebble and sacrifices herself by marrying the old « coot » and saves her father from emprisonment

Page 26: Storyofthetwopebbles

Take a moment to reflect on this

situation

Page 27: Storyofthetwopebbles
Page 28: Storyofthetwopebbles

This story means to illustrate a point…..

Page 29: Storyofthetwopebbles

The difference between logical thought and so called “lateral”thought.

Page 30: Storyofthetwopebbles

The daughter’s dilemma cannot be resolved equitable manner

Page 31: Storyofthetwopebbles

By traditional logic

Page 32: Storyofthetwopebbles

Think of the consequences of each of the three possible options.

Page 33: Storyofthetwopebbles

So, what would you have done ?

Page 34: Storyofthetwopebbles

Here is what the young woman did :

Page 35: Storyofthetwopebbles

Page 38: Storyofthetwopebbles
Page 39: Storyofthetwopebbles

She plunged her hand in the bag picked a pebble and, clumsily, dropped it on the ground

Page 40: Storyofthetwopebbles

before it could be determined wheter it was black or white, it mixed with other pebbles on the ground

Page 41: Storyofthetwopebbles

Ah ! Gosh! I sure am clumsy, said the young woman….

Page 42: Storyofthetwopebbles

But no matter: if I remove the other pebble from the bag ….

Page 43: Storyofthetwopebbles

We will know which pebble I had picked first dont you think?

Page 44: Storyofthetwopebbles

Since the second pebble was black,,

Page 45: Storyofthetwopebbles

The first had to have been white

Page 46: Storyofthetwopebbles

. The old lender didn’t dare announce his cheating, ….

Page 47: Storyofthetwopebbles

The young woman transformed a seemingly impossible situation

Page 48: Storyofthetwopebbles

Into a very advantageous ending !

Moral of the story:

Page 52: Storyofthetwopebbles

A solution exists for most problems

Page 53: Storyofthetwopebbles

It’s just that we don’t always know how to examine every angles of the situation

Page 54: Storyofthetwopebbles

May 2011 be full of positive thoughts and wise decisions!
