The importance of storytelling


Stories are fun and pleasure


They improve children’s imagination and memory.

Stories are memorable and enter into a long-term memory


They help children to understand the world around them


Stories are full of associations and they convey emotions


Stories help children relate new things to what they know already


Stories are cross-curricular and help bring English into other subjects


Stories introduce

a new language in context


They teach the culture that makes a language less abstract


They maintain a friendly atmosphere


Stories increase children’s attention


They faciliate communication (stories are interactive)


Stories introduce a nice change from the coursebook


Stories serve revision and consolidation purposes


Stories as food for language


Stories as food for sharing


Stories as food for mind


But on the other hand …

it is very difficult to find stories that appeal to everyone

some children just listen to stories and do nothing and other ones get too excited


Telling stories or reading

If you tell the story it’s yoursYou can see children’s facesYou can use gestures and

mimeYou can adapt the language


But …some teachers are afraid of

making mistakesstorytelling implies that

stories must be learnt by heart


While reading…

there’s no need to learn stories by heart

children will always hear the same text

you can use story pictures to help conveying meaning


you can repeat and rephrase in a natural way

you can stop and talk to the children about what is happening

reading stories aloud encourages reading

Choose stories which are aaccessible, useful and relevant
