Head Teacher’s Note
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have come to the end of the school year and have seen our students achieve
some wonderful things. I thank you all for your continued support and look forward
to seeing many of you on KS5 and KS4 results’ days. I am sure that you will enjoy
reading about some of the achievements of the term and I wish you all a very special
and restful summer.

House System It has been an excellent year for the new House system and there have been some
super contests between the Houses from table tennis to science awards to bake-offs
and quizzes. Next year, we will build on the success and have lots more new
competitions. Make it your challenge to take part in at least one event next year!
Overall, the House to catch next year is Boudicca who finish the year with two wins.
Only Clarkson failed to win a reward – something to aim for next year!

Deep Learning Day
As part of Deep Learning Day, Year 7 took part in a day of LORIC activities focused on
resilience.
Tutor groups rotated around different activities and at the end of the day, tutor
groups came back together in order to create a presentation about resilience,
working with their tutor to recap the learning from the day.

Session 3: Resilience Challenges in Maths
Session 4: Resilience Challenges in Science
Session 5: Resilience in Sport
Zoo School Trip
On Monday 23rd July, Year 7 students went to Colchester Zoo for their end of
year reward. The sun was shining and we saw lots of animals that we don’t
normally see in Stowupland!
Everyone had a fantastic time and it was a great way to end the year.

Mr Holden
As part of Deep Learning Day this term, we organised a visit to the school for Year 8
students. Humanutopia is a company whose courses are aimed at improving the
mental health and wellbeing of participants by empowering them to make positive
changes in their lives. They also hope to improve life chances by developing a range
of life skills to help individuals to become more employable.
As a year group, the students engaged incredibly well on what turned out to be quite
a hot and stuffy day. The 2 visitors from Humanutopia said how impressed they were
all day with the level of respect the students showed them and how well they
listened and engaged in activities throughout the day.
The day challenged students to develop new skills such as working with students who
they would not normally work with. Students were also encouraged to reflect on
their behaviour in school and how others may view them or be affected by the way
they behave. I hope everyone in the year group found the day to be really valuable.
Some incredibly brave students even had the confidence to stand up in front of
everyone and explain how bullying in their past and present has affected how they
behave now. It was an incredibly emotional moment and I would like to thank those
students who showed the confidence to share their story as without this, the
impact of the day would not have been as strong.
I would also like to thank Mr Broom and Mr Hailstone for organising and overseeing
the day.
Character Education Programme
Congratulations to the 190 Year 8 students who have successfully completed their
Apprentice Award. This is an outstanding achievement as this is a nationally
recognised award. The Apprentice Award is a two year accredited programme that
requires students to complete 10 tasks across 5 key attributes for Leadership,
Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication.

School Community Project
A few select students were invited to help with a school community project to help clear a corner of unused land by Mr Bartholomew’s herb garden. We also cleared an old flower bed ready for some new plants to attract butterflies and bees. Kieron was gardener of the day!

Physics Trip
On Sport’s Day, a group of four Year nine students: Benjamin Langley, Rubi-May
Mason, Rhiannon Day and George Murrell took the opportunity to attend the annual
Institute of Physics Year Nine Gifted and Talented Inter-School Competition: “Super
Physics”. This year it was hosted by King Edward VI School in Bury St Edmunds.
Sixteen schools were represented and the students gained points by working through
six long experiments, a poster on some science covered in the day and a presentation
based on the poster. At the end of the competition there was an excellent WOW
lecture that was based on career opportunities for Physics students interspersed with
practical physics demonstrations. Stowupland High School ended the competition in
eighth place and the students were praised by one of the supporting sponsors for an
investigation answer that was thought to stretch even the brightest. Our students
thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would recommend any Year nine next year to
take up the challenge.

Photography club with Mrs Blake
Photography club students started this half term full of enthusiasm and creativity.
The first task that Mrs Blake set the students was to photograph the alphabet from
objects/ views they could see around them. She was really impressed with the
dedication and hard work shown by the Year 8s, they found a wide range of ideas
with their cameras. Well done in particular to Caitin Reeve and Summer Austin
whose work is featured below, as they were the first students to complete the task!

Year 10 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) day at the University of Suffolk
Liberate & Educate: Inspirational Women event at the University of Suffolk
On Friday 26th May a group of Year 10 girls attended a workshop at the University of Suffolk focusing
on inspirational women in the workplace. The day started with an amazing keynote speaker called
Sandy Ruddock who started her own company called Scarlet and Mustard. This grew from an idea
given to her by her son who sold her homemade dressings outside her house. Due to the popularity of
these, she started working from her kitchen and things quickly went from strength to strength. Sandy
explained to students how hard it was at the beginning and how she had to work every step of the way
but has achieved great things by being resilient.
Students also attended a workshop led by Karismatic Minds who got them to focus on believing in
themselves, asked them to stop listening to what others say about them and to bring positive
affirmations into their lives. The workshop was run by a lady who had struggled emotionally at school
but had gone on to set up this company of her own and now runs two very successful companies.
Lighthouse, a women's’ charity, delivered a session called ‘Expect Respect’ which looked at positive
and negative relationships and what you can do if you find yourself in a negative relationship. Overall,
this was a great day and a really motivating experience for the students who attended.
Construction and Engineering workshops at Suffolk New College - Friday 21st June
A number of Year 10 girls had the opportunity to ‘have a go’ at various skills within the construction
and engineering sector at a workshop at Suffolk New College this term; the idea of these sessions was
to encourage more females into professions and trades traditionally considered to be ‘men's’
jobs’. Girls should not be put off these types of careers just because more men that women currently
work in these sectors; our girls certainly proved that they are just as good at these skills as the boys
and did exceptionally well.

After what has been a long but rewarding and successful year, we are looking forward
to saying our final goodbyes and congratulations to our fantastic Year 11 cohort on
Results’ day. It would be wonderful to see as many of you there as possible.

Prom 2019
The students enjoyed a wonderful two-course meal before taking to the dance floor;
five years of preparation and team-building saw a flawless performance of the
'Macarena' which would have definitely scored 10/10. It was wonderful to see the
students thriving as the fantastic young adults they have become; we couldn't be
more proud!

Sixth Form The Year 13 Prom
A wonderful evening was had by our Year 13 students and staff at Kersey Mill on
Saturday 13th July. It was fantastic to see them all looking so glamorous and joyful
after all their hard work for their A level exams.
Volunteering
Over the course of Year 12 our students have engaged in a variety of volunteering roles both inside school and in the wider community. They have provided invaluable help on Sports’ Day; been ambassadors at our Open Evenings; helped lead activities on the Year 6 induction days; been weekly mentors to younger students; served on the school council and been involved in a variety of youth groups in the local community. Here is a summary of the number of hours they have accumulated over the year.
As a Sixth Form, it is part of our culture that we give back to our community and I
could not be prouder of what they have achieved and how reflective they are in the
‘soft skills’ they have learnt.
“I have learnt many things from volunteering including seeing things from other
people’s perspective and how I can influence people’s decisions in regards to school
and how they act during it. I have enjoyed meeting my mentees and getting to know
them as people and helping them throughout the year with all improving.”
“I have learnt new kinds of communicative skills from mentoring and helping out
during induction days which I wouldn't have learnt otherwise. I have enjoyed helping
and communicating with others who I wouldn't normally - I have especially enjoyed
giving advice and solving problems.”

Sixth Form Trip to the Beach
The annual trip to Lowestoft was a huge success, blessed by fantastic weather, even
Alphonse the Sixth Form mascot got in on the action! This year for the first time we
took our prospective year 12s with us, so they could get a true insight into Sixth Form
life and get to know the existing students and staff. The sandcastle competition was
hotly contested with some exquisite engineering, classical architecture, a castle road
and one with a more avant-garde feel. What a wonderful way to end the year!
Rising Star
Sam Taylor in Year 12 is fast making a name for himself in the music world. His
intricate and complex banjo playing is beyond his years. He has so far played at the
Maverick Festival at Easton Farm Park and can also be seen at the John Peel Centre
later this summer.
