Chairman’s Address

As Chairman of Stradbally GAA Club, I wish to thank all the people who were involved in thestructurebuilding of our Development Plan.

An open invitation was extended out to our Community to get involved in the setting up ofour Development Plan. Under the guidance of John Byrne, who facilitated a workshopattended by approx 40 people to discuss where Stradbally GAA is at present and where wewish to be in 5 years time. More importantly how we could achieve our aims. Following onfrom the workshop, we held a series of meetings where 5 focus groups were set up with helpfrom County Board and Leinster Council. With the huge effort of our steering committeeChairman Dominic Hartnett we were on our way to our Developement Plan.

The ideas and plans which resulted from the workshop were many and varied. These werethen discussed by our focusgroups and are the framework of our Development Plan. Some of these ideas are already inplace such as, walkway around pitches, a new gym has been installed with plans to make thegym facilities bigger. Plans have also been drawn up to extend our kitchen area into ameeting/function room. As with all Development Plans, Finance and Fundraising plays amajor part and with the help of our focus groups this will be made possible in our 5 yearplan.

As our Club celebrates 125 years in existence this year it is important to make sure thateveryone involved in our Clubstrive to keep making it a better place for the next generation. I feel with the setting up ofthis Development Plan we are certainly heaing in the right direction.

Thanks again to everyone who got involved and looking forward to welcoming more peopleon board.

Martin Kelly,Chairman Stradbally GAA Club.

HISTORY

Stradbally GAA Club was founded sometime in the early spring of 1889, with the foundationmeeting probably taking place at the old Boys National School off Main Street. Mr. E. Nolan,Manager of the Malt House was the Clubs first President, Mr. Thomas Buggy, a local tailorwas Secretary, Mr. Tom Timmons, a local hotelier was Treasurer and Mr. Denis Shaughnessy, apublican in the town was Club Captain.

There were many turbulent moments in those early “political” ridden years but the Clubpersevered and reached its first final in 1903. The game played against Abbeyleix in 1904resulted in defeat. However, with players like the Delaney’s, Mick and Jack, the Comerfords, the Mullallys, Mick McLoughlin and Barry Murphy success did not elude the Club for long. After 18 years in existence the championship of 1905 was won when the team defeatedRaheenabrogue by 1-4 to 0-3 at Portlaoise on the 21st. January 1906. More championshipswere to follow in 1908 and 1911.

Sadly due to a combination of incidents and a split over land division in the area, the Clubdivided and what had promised to be a period of high achievement saw Stradbally return toJunior status, some of its best players disperse to other Clubs and the Club finally fall intoabeyance.

Following almost 7 years of inactivity the Club re-emerged in 1924 to enjoy a “golden” era inLaois football. They took their fourth title after a seventeen year gap in 1928 defeatingGraiguecullen by 1-4 to 1-2 at Portlaoise. With experienced players like Matt Delaney, JackDelaney (jnr), Paddy Connell and Dick Rankins two more titles were added in 1929 and 1930to complete a marvellous three in a row. Over the next eleven years (1931 to 1941) sevenmore titles were won due mainly to the fact that the Club produced a string of talentedplayers such as Bill and Mick Delaney, Paddy Swayne, Har Browne and Tommy Walsh tomention but a few. Many of these served Club, County and Province with distinction and itwas hardly surprising that between 1927 and 1941, the Club contested 12 Senior finalswinning a staggering ten.

For many people these were the “Stradbally-Graiguecullen Years” and indeed there weresome enthralling “contests” between both Clubs. They backboned the County team toLeinster successes in ’36, ’37 and ’38, with Bill Delaney and Tommy Murphy forming a

Page 6: Stradbally GAA Strategic Review Plan 2014-2019

6

midfield partnership that ignited the imagination of that football generation. For Stradbally players and the Club the thirties were certainly years of achievement anddistinction. Tom, Bill, Mick, Chris and Jack Delaney and Paddy Swayne lined out against Mayoin the 1936 All Ireland Final, Jack Delaney (jnr) became the first Laoisman to play for Leinster,Bill Delaney became the first Laoisman to Captain Leinster to a Railway Cup success and on7th. June 1935 ten Stradbally men lined out for Laois against Kildare in the Championship.

The forties saw the decline of that once almost “invincible” side and although they contestedthe finals of ’48 and ’49 without success, they were but a shadow of their former greatness. The Club won two Minor Football Championships in 1952 and 1953, ironically it being theirfailure to bring on minor teams in the forties that lead to a dearth of talent in the fifties. Leanyears mainly due to emigration were endured in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. The Club returned toJunior status in 1956, progressing back to Senior ranks, via Junior success over The MentalHospital in 1958 and Intermediate victory against Fairymount in 1959. In 1963, they againreturned to Intermediate ranks, advancing straight back up to Senior status with a win overCrettyard after a replay. The Club won the 1969 Minor Football Championship again as aseparate entity. Indeed this period was one of mixed fortunes in Stradbally circles, it was agreat achievement for the young players of the ’52 and ’53 minor success to restoreStradbally to senior ranks, however devastated by unemployment the Club struggled atsenior level. While the flame was rekindled briefly in the 1970’s,with success in the ForrestalCup, numerous wins in various Tournaments in Durrow, Timahoe and Edenderry and aDivision 1 League victory over Portarlington in 1974, luck was never with the side in theChampionship, with several semi-final defeats during the early part of the decade, the mosttalked about being the 1975 Championship semi final encounter where Graiguecullenemerged victorious on a scoreline of 4-9 to 3-11. Jim Leonard captained Laois to victory inthe inaugural Leinster Under 21 Football Championship in 1964 against Offaly, failingnarrowly to Kerry in the All Ireland Final in September of that year. Sean Delaney was amember of the Laois Minor Football team that were successful in the Leinster Minor Final in1966, defeating Offaly, while Colman McEvoy was centre back on the Laois Minor Footballteam of 1967 that defeated Dublin, prior to losing to Cork in the All Ireland Final.

In 1981, the Club returned to Intermediate ranks as a result of a humiliating relegation play-off defeat to Barrowhouse. Division 2 Football League success followed in 1982 and 1983,with victories over The Rock and Crettyard in respective finals. A return to Senior status wasachieved in 1983, with Intermediate Football Championship success gained against finalopponents Killeshin. This win was further supplemented with a Junior “B” success againstRosenallis that year and followed in 1984 with a Junior victory over Mountrath. In the Club’sCentenary Year 1989, the team made a brave attempt to recapture former glories and bringthe title back to the “little town” for the first time since 1941, but they were pipped at thepost by St. Josephs 1-8 to 1-7 after a replay. John Comerford was a member of the successfulLaois Under 21 Football team that won the Provincial title defeating Longford in 1982, whileMichael Byrne and Brendan Buggie were part of the Laois Under 21 Football panel whoregained this title in 1987.

In 1988, the Club, under the Chairmanship of Michael Mulhare, purchased almost nine acresof the “Cow Lawn” as it is commonly known from the Cosby family for a sum of £20,000. The

Page 7: Stradbally GAA Strategic Review Plan 2014-2019

7

Club embarked on major fundraising initiatives and sale of assets to develop the Polesbridgesite into what is our present home today. The grounds were officially opened in May 1993,the occasion marked with a Senior Football Tournament game between Laois and Kildare. The break with “The Lawn”, our traditional home since the 1920’s courtesy of the Cosbyfamily was an emotional one and for many the spirit of Stradbally football will always remainthere. In 2001, the ground was officially named “Páirc Liam O’Dubhsláinne” in memory of ourformer great.

In the nineties, the Club endured mixed fortunes albeit without success up until 1997, whenthe Senior Football Championship was recaptured after a lapse of 56 years defeatingPortlaoise on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-10. Further success followed in 1998 with the title beingretained with victory over The Rock 0-8 to 0-5, with the Club also advancing that year to aLeinster Club semi final defeat to Kilmacud Crokes of Dublin, 1-10 to 1-7. Hopes of a three ina row in 1999 were dashed at semi final stage by Portlaoise, with a Division 1 League successover Ballyroan providing some consolation.

In 2001, the Senior team reached another final, this time being denied by Portarlington aftera replay, our Junior team incidentally also losing their Championship final to St. LazeriansAbbeyleix after a replay. The year 2003 promised to be one of the greatest in the Club’shistory with our Junior and Junior “B” team’s achieving Championship successes over TheHeath and Spink respectively, only for our Senior team to be denied the “clean sweep” with anarrow final defeat to Arles Kilcruise on a score line of 0-8 to 0-7. In 2005, the Club were backin another Senior final against old rivals Portlaoise and credited the Club with their sixteenthtitle on a score of 1-10 to 1-9. The year 2007 saw the two Clubs renew rivalry in the Seniorfinal, with Portlaoise this time gaining revenge for their defeat two years previously. As tradition prevails, the Club continued to supply numerous players, who had backbonedthe Club to these victories and who went on with our County teams to enjoy a certainamount of Provincial and All Ireland success during the past decade and a half - All IrelandMinor Football successes in 1996 (Robert Darby, Padraig Langton and Eddie Kinsella); 1997(Gary Kavanagh and Paul Maher) and 2003 (Colm Begley, Colm Kelly, Ray Barry and BrianMortimer); Leinster Minor Football victories in 1996 (Robert Darby, Padraig Langton andEddie Kinsella); 1997 (Gary Kavanagh and Paul Maher); 1998 (Daragh McEvoy); 2004 (ColmBegley, Brian Mortimer, Darren Maher and Alan Delaney); 2005 (Darren Maher) and 2007(Conor Delaney); Leinster Under 21 Football wins in 1994 (Eamon Delaney, Damian Delaneyand John Larkin); 1998 (Greg Ramsbottom and Larry Keenan); 2006 (Colm Kelly) and 2007(Stephen Lawlor and Darren Maher) and Leinster Senior Football Championship success in2003 (Damian Delaney, Gary Kavanagh and Daragh Mulhall). Tony “Barney” Maher’scontribution and service to Laois football during the early part of this period should also beacknowledged.

Many able Club administrators and players have also served our County in various differentadministrations and offices – Denis Shaughnessy (Central Council Delegate); Jack DelaneySen. (Leinster Council Delegate); Jack Delaney Jun. (Chairman Laois Football Board); BillDelaney (Central Council Delegate); Danny Delaney (Vice Chairman Laois GAA); JimKavanagh (Treasurer Laois GAA; Leinster Council Delegate and Secretary Laois FootballBoard); Michael McEvoy (Secretary Laois Juvenile Board); Niall Handy (Laois GAA Secretary)

and Gerry Kavanagh (Laois GAA Chairperson).

In Refereeing, Maurice Deegan by officiating the 2008 All Ireland Football Final betweenTyrone and Kerry, followed in the footsteps of Bill Delaney whom had taken charge of AllIreland Football Finals in 1946 and 1951.
