BOOK WEEK BREAKFAST

This week L6 have been celebrating Book Week with a special

Book Week Breakfast. More information about this will be

included in the next newsletter. This special breakfast

wouldn’t be possible without the amazing support of our

Canteen Manager, Kate Majewski. Thank you for opening the

canteen, working with L6 to organise, prepare and serve a

yummy breakfast, cleaning the canteen and always being

happy and helpful.

MYP SERVICE AND ACTION HOURS

As part of their learning in the MYP, students are encouraged

to demonstrate a personal commitment to service, and act to

make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the

environment. Students are recognised for their service both

at school and in the wider community. At Stradbroke the Year

6 and 7 students will take part in a Community Service

program. The main aims are:

• To encourage responsible citizenship in the world outside

the classroom

• To increase students’ sense of responsibility and self

esteem

• To allow students to use talents and skills developed

beyond the classroom.

Students are given the opportunity to be leaders in numerous

ways including as house captains running the PALS

programme, volunteering in the library, being on traffic duty

and assisting in the canteen. These hours are logged and

then recognised. The following students have completed

their hours for 2017:

ABSENCE/FAMILY HOLIDAY

Please advise the school every day your child is going to be

away for any reason by:

• telephoning the school between 8.15 a.m. and 9.30 a.m.

on 8365 5621, and leaving a message, stating your

child’s name, child’s class and reason for absence

• email the school on

[email protected]

• completing the Absentee Form in eforms on the

Skoolbag app.

If a family holiday/travel is planned during term time, a

student exemption form (ED176) needs to be collected from

the Front Office, completed and submitted to the Principal for

approval.

A daily email will be sent to the enrolling parent for any

unexplained absence.

EXHIBITION POSTER

LOST PROPERTY

The lost property cupboard in the Leabrook building outside

of Kidzone is full of jackets at the moment so if your child is

missing any uniform please have a look.

SCHOOL ZONE

Following community consultation earlier this year an

enrolment zone has now been formally approved for

Stradbroke School. The map of the zone can be viewed by

searching for Stradbroke School Zone in the search engine of

the DECD website www.decd.sa.gov.au

• A ‘right of enrolment’ will continue to apply for children

living on the Cherryville/Montacute bus run.

• Children currently enrolled at Stradbroke will continue to

attend the school even if they live outside the zone.

• Currently siblings of children at Stradbroke will also be able

to attend Stradbroke even if they live outside the zone.

• Subject to availability, places may then be considered for

children from outside the zone.

STRADBROKE RECYCLED

A Second-hand Uniform Stall will be held on

Friday 25th

August (Week 5) from 8:30-9:30am in the

quadrangle.

Most items are available for a gold-coin donation, except for:

- polar fleece jumpers with school logo and two-tone

school tops are $5

- two-tone track jackets are $10

All proceeds go directly to the school.

Donations of good quality, clean uniform items with logos on

and nametags off are always gratefully received and can be

left in the hamper outside the cashier’s office. Keep the

goodwill going Stradbroke!”

RESOURCE CENTRE

Thank you to everyone who supported our Book Fair in the

library this week. We really appreciate the level of excitement

and interest. A percentage of every book purchased raised

money for the school but at the time of publishing the

newsletter we don't yet have a total to share with you.

The Book Fair was hosted as a way to acknowledge the

amazing authors and illustrators of children's books and

to observe Book Week. Book Week is celebrated at this time

of the year in schools, public libraries and other education

settings around Australia. Book Week is also the time when

the books that were acknowledged through being shortlisted

in the CBCA Book Awards find out if they have won. Last

Friday night the winners of the CBCA Book Awards were

announced and it is always interesting to see what the judges

determine to be the best book in each category compared to

the children's perspectives. The winners and honour books

can be seen at https://cbca.org.au/winners-2017

We would also like to thank the school community for

supporting Book Week in other ways, including the Book

Week breakfast being catered for by Kylie's class and the

assemblies hosted by Lia & Vanessa's classes for R-4 classes

and Shae's class for the upper primary. Both were focused on

Book Week. Many classes and teacher's shared stories and

books to promote reading through the week.

Emma Green, Teacher Librarian

EMERGENCY DRILLS

Each year we practice Emergency Drills (evacuations and

invacuations) so that we have procedures in place to respond

quickly and carefully to a variety of situations. We have four

types of emergency drills and these are practised at least

once each year. Class teachers discuss with their classes the

types of emergency drills and talk about what they will do as

a class. The specific day and time of an emergency drill cannot

be notified in advance. The drills also include all staff and any

visitors on site at the time of the drill. The four types of drills

we practise are:

1. Evacuation – on site: A series of short blasts of the siren

is used to alert all adults and children on site to evacuate

to the oval. This type of emergency drill could be used for

an internal fire.

2. Evacuation – off site: A series of short blasts of the siren

followed by an announcement is used to alert adults and

children on site to evacuate to the Rostrevor Tennis Club

Courts. This type of emergency drill could be used if we

were advised to evacuate by emergency services e.g. a

creek flood

3. Invacuation – shelter in place: A continuous blast of the

siren followed by an announcement to stay inside

buildings is used to alert all adults and children to stay

inside or to move inside the nearest building. This type of

emergency drill could be used if there was a fire in the

hills and smoke was blowing over the school. A few years

ago we also used this drill when there was a kangaroo in

the school grounds. During this drill people can move

around inside buildings.

4. Invacuation – Precautionary Building Confinement: A

continuous blast of the siren followed by the

announcement “LOCK DOWN” is used to alert all adults

and children to stay inside or to move inside the nearest

building. Once inside they must stay down on the floor,

away from windows and doors, turn off lights and close

blinds. This type of drill is used if there is an extreme

violent threat.

After we practise each drill feedback is collected from staff to

identify any issues with the procedure and improvements are

made. All drills include a roll call to ensure that all students,

staff and visitors are accounted for.

EARLY MORNING ARRIVAL

Students are allowed to start arriving at school from 8:30am.

Students who arrive before 8:30am must be booked into Kids’

Zone. Students who are on the school grounds before 8.30am

will be taken to Kids’ Zone and families will be sent an invoice.

This is duty of care issue as there are no teachers on duty

prior to 8:30am.

Classrooms will be opened at 8:40am and students may enter

the buildings to put away their bags, talk to the teacher and

get organised for the day. Music is played at 8:48am followed

by a siren at 8.50am indicating that classes are commencing

and all students need to be in their classrooms ready to start.

STAFF CAR PARKS

We’ve received a number of reports from people concerned

about staff car parks being used by families to drop and

collect children from school. This is a significant safety risk for

children as they are walking through an area with moving

vehicles. Keeping all children safe is our priority please do not

use the staff car parks to drop or collect children.

Some families may be wondering why they see staff parking

in nearby streets when we have staff carparks on the school

grounds. Stradbroke School has three staff carparks and

together they provide 55 car parking spaces, the challenge

with this is that we have 75 staff at the school and another 25

staff working in the OSHC service. Whilst not all staff work

fulltime we do have more staff than carparks every day of the

week. The empty spaces in staff carparks at various times

throughout the day are a consequence of different start and

finish times for staff in the school and OSHC service.

The team played so well on Saturday. With no substitutes

they all had to run the game out to the very end, they

certainly deserved their lolly pops. . Ava-Rose really got in

there along with Renee to show that the girls were not going

to let the boys out play them. Lochie was everywhere along

with Bilal, Sebastian and David stopping the opposition and

providing opportunities for the team to score. Hayden did

well to get a few touches. Aiman played in goals for the first

time and for the whole game. He was here, there and

everywhere. Burnside were undefeated and the opposition

coach was really impressed with our first half. The second

half was when Burnside really hit their straps. We were

certainly run off our feet and didn’t have much left in the

tank. It was an excellent effort by everyone nonetheless.

The team once again played so well on Saturday. Having no

substitutes the kids did well to play the whole game out. We

were lucky to keep Linden Park Primary to just two goals –

they had a hard time not going offside. That along with some

great goalkeeping work from Lochie with a fantastic save in

the first half kept the opposition to only 1 goal at half

time. Bilal had some wonderful runs down the line and with

Sebastian in defence they all worked very hard. Ava-Rose

really got in there once again and worked that mid field like a

pro. Well done to both Aiman, Renee and Hayden for getting

a few touches and providing a block to the opposition when

opportunities were placed in front of them. One more game

to go before the end of the season. I am so very proud of

each and every one of them for coming along each week and

playing their hearts out. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get
