Blow drying and styling your hair can be a difficult task, depending on your hair’s texture. Every type of hair needs different styling products, tools, and time. You also have to determine what style you want for the day. So you need a maximum of four things to achieve a great style-shampoo and conditioner, prestyle products, proper tools, and finishing products. You might not need all of these if you want a simple style.

Finishing products are important as well. They can give you that extra shine, volume, humidity protection, defi-

nition, hold, softness, and texture. After you have spent time on your blow dry, you need to make sure your hair will live through the day. That’s what finishing products do. Shine sprays and glosses are a great way to finish long smooth and flowing hair. Hairsprays and waxes can help keep volume and style in your hair. Waxes and po-mades create texture to all lengths of hair. This last step really helps determine what your hair will do for the rest of the day.

Page 11: Strand

Give Your Hair MovementIf you want more of a bend or curl to your hair, use a smaller round brush on your ends. Hold the dryer to your ends as they are wrapped around the brush. Move the dryer back and forth across the brush ensuring that you don’t keep the heat in one spot for too long. Once you achieve the curl or bend you want, move on to other sections at your ends.

Give Your Hair Volume and LiftOnce your back and sides are dry, you’re ready for the last section on the top. For a more voluminous top, blow dry your roots in the opposite direction you want them to lay. In other words, up and forward, side to side. This will prevent your hair from lying flat, and with that root lifter and mousse you used, it shouldn’t be difficult to achieve. At the crown, blow dry those roots forward and up. On the top sides, blow dry to the opposite side your hair will be laying. And at the very top of your head blow dry forward. Once the roots are dry, then you can go back and redirect the ends in the direction they need to go. Here you can finish your ends straight, with a curl, or a bend, depending on your look and style for the day.

Lock In Your StyleIf you have a fringe (bangs), the easiest way to make them lay perfect is to blow dry them side to side and the redirect the ends down, to the side, or however you wish to wear them. All that’s left is to use the proper finish-ing product to keep your volume, shine, softness, tex-ture, or curl. This will keep your hair looking and feeling great all day.

If you need help, simply ask your stylist to teach you the best and easiest ways to style your hair. Always use the products and tools your stylist recommends. A good styl-ist knows that if you can’t duplicate your style at home, it’s his or her job to teach you. Be patient and keep at it. Sometimes all you need is a little bit of practice and patience.

Tip: Once hair is dry, tip it forward and give it a blast with cool air. I will seal the style for awhile.

Which hairstyles are really hot this

season?Texture has definitely

come back it’s more of a beachy, wavy feel, a look that’s softer, sexier and more tussled lift, volume

and fullness. Also women are tak-ing their look to

shorter hair.

Page 25: Strand

strand’s celebrity stylist .23Speaking of short hair, tell us your best tips for styling abbreviated snips… A good haircut is the foundation of great styling every day. It’s also about finding the right products. For my own hair, I can’t use anything too heavy that may weigh it down because my hair is fine and short. I like my hair to have movement and shine.

Name on styling tool every person needs. A blow-dryer! Not everyone uses a brush or flat irons their hair, but at some point they will blow dry their hair. Having a great blow-dryer that feels great in your hand, doesn’t damage your hair and gets the job done is really important.

What types of products are essential? For me, it definitely starts with a great shampoo and conditioner be-cause we all need something to cleanse our hair in the right way to protect the color and provide our hair with right ingredients it needs to look shiny and healthy. Then use a styling product – whether it’s a light-weight hairspray to hold shape and style, a mousse to add some body or a diffusing serum for the curly hair out there!

Why should we go to a salon in-stead of cutting or coloring our hair at home? Look, we’ve all had re-ally bad hair experiences, whether it’s been at a salon or at home. I have seen so many people make the mistake of trying to do hair themselves, and they end up spending a lot of time and money in the salon getting it fixed. I always liken it to a doctor: you don’t diagnose yourself – you always go to a pro-fessional. It’s the same thing with a great haircut and color.

What should we consider when searching for a new hairstylist?Go on a recommendation. If you love some-one’s hair, ask that person who does their hair. Also, I always like when people come into my salon for a consultation. It’s a great way for new clients to get a feel for the vibe of the salon, to see the work that’s being done and to see if they feel comfortable with the hairdresser.

FROM WITCH TO PIXIE CHICK

EMMA WATSON

Take a look at star Emma Watson’s brand new - and very different pixie haircut!

Emma Watson wants to be known for more than her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies. So what did she do to let go of the Hermione Granger image af-ter wrapping the movie’s fi-nal Harry Potter film? Why, she chopped off those famous wavy locks, of course.

Emma Watson told strand magazine, “The stylist just grabbed the back of my hair and took a whole ponytail of hair out. It felt amazing. I love it.”Rodney Cutler of the Cutler Salon in New York is responsible for Watson’s close cut.

The Secrets Behind Emma Watson’s New Hairstyle: An Interview with Stylist Rodney CutlerEmma Watson shocked us and simultaneously became the hair icon of the moment when she chopped off her long unruly locks for a daring pixie cut. Her perfect pixie has morphed into a new style, revealed at the world premiere of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows - Part 2 at in London, England. I was thrilled when the mastermind behind Emma’s look, Stylist Rodney Cutler of Cutler Salon, let me pick his brain about Emma’s new look, and he even shared a few styling tips.

Q. Emma Watson’s pixie cut was big, highly anticipated news for both Emma fans and Harry Potter fans, alike. How did you come to the decision make this change in her style?Rodney Cutler: I wanted to find a way to move towards longer hair but maintain a really strong look in the growing phase. I felt this look would give it that classic feel with a mod-ern twist with a disconnected graduated bob. I played on this fact that by giving her these soft, feathered, sweeping bangs and gave the overall look a rich warmer color to draw some drama to it.

Q. Now that Emma Watson is a hair icon, it certainly puts you both in the spotlight with every hairstyle change. How have you and Emma embraced your new iconic status?Rodney Cutler: I’m put in the po-sition to do a great job. And she happens to be the style icon of the moment so it is pretty spe-cial.

Q. How has Emma Watson’s latest cut evolved?Rodney Cutler: Her look has evolved from the highly celebrated pixie to a longer length. I created a classic grad-uated bob reminiscent of the Louise Brooks era, but modernizing it with layers on the interior, and feathered bangs in the front to draw an outline of and attention to a strong silhouette.

Q. What products do you use on her hair?Rodney Cutler: I applied Red-ken Root Lifter and then wrap blow dried the hair so that strands would appear naturally straight. I then gently flat ironed hair pieces from the mid to the ends of the hair shaft, lightly flipping out the ends with the flat iron, and sprayed Redken Fashion Work 12 hairspray and and finished off with Cutler Shine

Q. What are your inside tips and tricks for styling a cut like Emma Wat-son’s?Rodney Cutler: You have to start with the right hair cut, this is absolutely critical. This short style al-lows you simplistic drama whether it is going messy and edgy or sleeked back. You can mix it up.
