Just as Beethoven bestrode his world at the start of the 19th century, so Stravinsky set out to shockhis world of the early twentieth century and beyond. The three great ballets written before 1914,Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring were to cause shock waves. We will hear the slimmeddown Stravinsky of the First World War (Renard and The Soldier’s Tale), the good manneredStravinsky of his neo-classical period (Apollo, The Fairy’s Kiss and Pulcinella) and the seriousStravinsky (Symphony of Psalms and Oedipus Rex). There follows his American period including hisviolin concerto and two symphonies. And to finish is his later conversion to serialism.
