U4 – WRAPPING Learning Outcomes
U4 Levels 4 – ECVET Credit points: 10%
Knowledge Skills
Trainees know !
• about building regulations according to the countries rules
• wrapping and retrofitting, the different methods and techniques.
• about requirements for wrapping technique. i.e.: existing walls must be sound and dry, bales lifted from ground (for example on insulated plinth wall), sufficient roof overhang, window detailing (light, airtightness, thermal bridges, weather detailing!)
• the advantages and disadvantages of different wrapping methods and techniques.
• the tools and machines used in the straw bale construction sites.
• the possible dangers, the safe working practices, accident prevention regulations and security data sheets.
• how to join to adjacent building elements (floor and roof plates, openings)
• the specific straw bale requests on logistics and knows how to protect the bales and the construction under different weather conditions.
• to read plans for wrapping and retrofitting and know how to carry it out
• different fixings and their characteristic methods of compressing.
• Different possibilities to fill the gaps between the bales
• about the timetable and its connection with the costs.
• how to describe the structural connections and detailing between wrapping and existing wall to guarantee a lasting airtight compound between structure and wrapping
Trainees can !
• quality control existing constructions • handle the tools and machines which are used in the
straw bale construction. • estimate the dangers linked with the building
technique and can minimise the risk. • agree on safety regulations with the other partners
(planner, developers, self builders etc.) in such a way that the building site is safe.
• apply different wrapping and retrofitting methods. • resize and fix the bales and fill gaps in order to
produce a continuous layer of insulation. • make a lasting connection between the wrapping
and the loadbearing construction. • Fix the bales without space between the bales and
the existing construction • make a time table and organize the work routines. • make supportive wooden structures. • give instructions to others regarding making the
plinth wall and other requested details. • preparing openings
Competence
Trainees can !
• agree with all partners good practice for maintaining a safe building site. • organize the work on straw bale building site for wrapping and retrofitting and can integrate it with suitable
work routines, tools and techniques. • explain different ways of wrapping and retrofitting and are able to select a suitable method for a specific
situation based on the corresponding advantages and disadvantages. • inspect and select good quality bales for wrapping and retrofitting. Trainees can control the general quality of
the bales and built structures during the whole building process. • make the plinth wall, other details and airtightness or delegate the task to others.
