STREAM: Love Creek BASIN: Powder River DATES: July 10 – 17, 2009 SURVEY CREW: Nichole Bushey / Emily Zimmermann REPORT PREPARED BY: Staci Stein USGS MAPS: Glasgow Butte ECOREGION: Blue Mountains Basin and Upland BASIN AREA: 46.73km2 STREAM ORDER: 4 FIRST ORDER TRIBUTARIES: 6 HUC NUMBER: 17050203 LLID: 1174366448292 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Love Creek habitat survey began at the confluence with the Powder River and continued upstream 9103 meters ending near the headwaters where the channel forks. Ten reaches were designated based on major tributary junctions and changes in channel morphology. The river channel was predominately constrained by terraces and hillslopes. Land use was heavy grazing. There were 1474 meters of secondary channel habitat. Cobble (36%), fine sediments (30%), and gravel (21%) were the primary stream substrates. The stream habitats were predominately riffles (27%), scour pools (26%), dry units (24%), and glides (20%). No large wood was noted in the channel. Active bank erosion ranged from 2-25 percent of the stream length and the percent of undercut bank per reach length ranged from 0-14 percent. The vegetation found most frequently in the riparian zones were grasses and sagebrush (based on 19 transects). REACH DESCRIPTIONS: Reach 1: (T08S-R43E-S34SW) Length 1087 meters. Reach 1 began at the confluence with the
Powder River. The channel was alternately constrained by terraces and hillslopes in a broad valley floor. The average valley width index was 36.8 (range: 3.7-99.0). Land use was heavy grazing. The average unit gradient was 2.6 percent. Scour pools (58%), glides (17%), and riffles (12%) were the primary stream habitats. Fine sediments (48%), cobble (27%), and gravel (15%) were the primary stream substrates. Seven percent of the reach length was actively eroding. No large wood was noted in the channel. The vegetation in the riparian zones were predominately grasses (based on two riparian transects).

Cobble (42%), fine sediments (31%), and gravel (20%) were the primary stream substrates. Active bank erosion was 15 percent for the reach length. There was no large wood debris in the stream channel. The vegetation found most frequently in the riparian zones were grasses and shrubs (based on one riparian transect).
Reach 4: (T09S-R43E-S09NE) Length 868 meters. The channel was constrained by multiple
terraces within a broad valley floor. The average valley width index was 59.7 (range: 12.0-99.0). Land use was heavy grazing. The average unit gradient was 2.5 percent. Scour pools (38%), riffles (30%), and dry units (24%) were the dominant stream habitats. Cobble (42%), fine sediments (29%), and gravel (23%) were the primary stream substrate types. Active bank erosion was 7 percent of the reach length. No large wood was noted. The vegetation found most frequently in the riparian zones were shrubs and grasses (based on two riparian transects).
Reach 5: (T09S-R43E-S09SE) Length 1041 meters. Reach 5 began after the confluence with East
Fork tributary. The channel was constrained by multiple terraces in a broad valley floor. The average valley width index was 58.0 (range: 5.0-99.0). Land use was heavy grazing. The average unit gradient was 3.1 percent. Glides (47%) and riffles (41%) were the dominant stream habitats. Cobble (39%), fine sediments (26%), and gravel (21%) were the primary stream substrates. Active bank erosion was 5 percent of the reach length. There was no large wood volume noted in the stream channel. The vegetation found most frequently in the riparian zones were grasses and shrubs (based on two riparian transects). No trees were observed within the riparian transects.
Reach 6: (T09S-R43E-S16NE) Length 1187 meters. Reach 6 began after an unnamed tributary
junction. The channel was constrained by multiple terraces in a broad valley floor. The average valley width index was 59.0 (range: 27.0-85.0). Land use was heavy grazing. The average unit gradient was 2.8 percent. Riffles (58%), glides (22%), and scour pools (15%) were the predominant stream habitats. Cobble (37%), fine sediments (30%), and gravel (25%) were the primary stream substrates. Active bank erosion was 5 percent of the reach length. No large wood was noted. The vegetation found most frequently in the riparian zones were shrubs and grasses (based on two riparian transects).
Reach 7: (T09S-R43E-S16SE) Length 311 meters. The channel was unconstrained in a wide
floodplain. The average valley width index was 23.2 (range: 23.0-23.5). There were 354 meters of secondary channel habitat. Land use was heavy grazing. The average unit gradient was 2.9 percent. COMMENTS:
In the lower quarter of the stream survey, the crew observed many small speckled and striped fish which were not positively identified. Additional wildlife noted included prints of deer, raccoon, and canine. Salamander, tiny green frogs, tadpoles, and water snakes were also observed. The stream channel had low water flow and runs through sagebrush and grass covered hillslopes and terraces. The entirety of Love Creek had evidence of heavy grazing with the crew noting two herds of cattle within the stream valley. One named tributary (East Fork) and four unnamed tributaries were encountered; the majority of which were dry. Reach two through reach five are located on BLM property. Reach one and the upper reaches are located on private property.
