ODFW AQUATIC INVENTORY PROJECT STREAM REPORT STREAM: Love Creek BASIN: Powder River DATES: July 10 – 17, 2009 SURVEY CREW: Nichole Bushey / Emily Zimmermann REPORT PREPARED BY: Staci Stein USGS MAPS: Glasgow Butte ECOREGION: Blue Mountains Basin and Upland BASIN AREA: 46.73km 2 STREAM ORDER: 4 FIRST ORDER TRIBUTARIES: 6 HUC NUMBER: 17050203 LLID: 1174366448292 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Love Creek habitat survey began at the confluence with the Powder River and continued upstream 9103 meters ending near the headwaters where the channel forks. Ten reaches were designated based on major tributary junctions and changes in channel morphology. The river channel was predominately constrained by terraces and hillslopes. Land use was heavy grazing. There were 1474 meters of secondary channel habitat. Cobble (36%), fine sediments (30%), and gravel (21%) were the primary stream substrates. The stream habitats were predominately riffles (27%), scour pools (26%), dry units (24%), and glides (20%). No large wood was noted in the channel. Active bank erosion ranged from 2- 25 percent of the stream length and the percent of undercut bank per reach length ranged from 0-14 percent. The vegetation found most frequently in the riparian zones were grasses and sagebrush (based on 19 transects). REACH DESCRIPTIONS: Reach 1: (T08S-R43E-S34SW) Length 1087 meters. Reach 1 began at the confluence with the Powder River. The channel was alternately constrained by terraces and hillslopes in a broad valley floor. The average valley width index was 36.8 (range: 3.7-99.0). Land use was heavy grazing. The average unit gradient was 2.6 percent. Scour pools (58%), glides (17%), and riffles (12%) were the primary stream habitats. Fine sediments (48%), cobble (27%), and gravel (15%) were the primary stream substrates. terraces and hillslopes in a broad valley floor. The average valley width index was 16.2 (range: 3.2-45.0). Land use was heavy grazing. The average unit gradient was 4.6 percent. Riffles (58%), scour pools (19%), and rapids (13%) were the predominant stream habitats. The stream substrate was primarily cobble (42%), gravel (22%), and fines (15%). Active bank erosion was 3 percent for the reach length. No large wood debris was noted. The vegetation in the riparian zones were primarily shrubs and grasses (based on two riparian transects).

COMMENTS:

In the lower quarter of the stream survey, the crew observed many small speckled and striped fish which were not positively identified. Additional wildlife noted included prints of deer, raccoon, and canine. Salamander, tiny green frogs, tadpoles, and water snakes were also observed. The stream channel had low water flow and runs through sagebrush and grass covered hillslopes and terraces. The entirety of Love Creek had evidence of heavy grazing with the crew noting two herds of cattle within the stream valley. One named tributary (East Fork) and four unnamed tributaries were encountered; the majority of which were dry. Reach two through reach five are located on BLM property. Reach one and the upper reaches are located on private property.
