You should not walk in behind a person without asking his/her permission and if you are fishing somewhat close to the person do not fish in their drift area. Be patient and after a period of time ask permis- sion to fish through. Always move behind the angler, never in front of them. 4. A fisherperson working in an upstream direction has the right of way over someone coming downstream. Wading upstream against the current forces you to move slowly, cover less water, and you are approaching the fish from behind. The fisherperson working in a downstream direction covers more wa- ter, more quickly, and has the potential to disturb more water. For instance, careless wading could send silt or debris downstream alarming fish. 5.) Fish- ing pressure and limits can over time greatly reduce the available fish popula- tions in any stream, pond or lake unless voluntary restraint is practiced. A le- gal limit is not a quota, let your motto be: Limit your kill, dont kill your lim- it. MTFA encourages the catch-and-release philosophy of angling, allowing fish to mature, reproduce and live to fight another day. 6. Multiple recreational use of streams is common. We may share the re- source with canoes, boats, float tubes etc. It is the responsibility of the canoer to recognize that the angler has established a position before the canoe floated into view. The canoer should try to pass behind the angler if at all possible, if not he should float by quietly with minimum disturbance. Power boats should always slow down when approaching a angler or other craft. They need to learn this on Taneycomo. Gary Davisson/Marvin Allision

Streamside Etiquette 101

The subject of streamside etiquette is not often discussed but needs to be

addressed at least once a year. It would be nice if the fly shops would post

stream etiquette in their shops. I believe the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF)

has one posted on their web site.

1. Angling ethics begins with obeying the conservation laws associated with

the state where you will be fishing. Be sure to get a copy of their rules and

regulations.

2. It is a privilege to be able to participate in our sport of fly fishing. Respect

private property, get permission if you are unsure about access, talk to the

landowner. If on farm property, do not trample crops, be sure to ask about

livestock locations and close all gates and last but not least, leave the area bet-

ter than you found it. Pick up all trash and carry it out.

3. A section of water belongs to the first fisher person fishing it. It is incon-

siderate to crowd him/her. You should not walk in behind a person without

asking his/her permission and if you are fishing somewhat close to the person

do not fish in their drift area. Be patient and after a period of time ask permis-

sion to fish through. Always move behind the angler, never in front of them.

4. A fisherperson working in an upstream direction has the right of way over

someone coming downstream. Wading upstream against the current forces

you to move slowly, cover less water, and you are approaching the fish from

behind. The fisherperson working in a downstream direction covers more wa-

ter, more quickly, and has the potential to disturb more water. For instance,

careless wading could send silt or debris downstream alarming fish. 5.) Fish-

ing pressure and limits can over time greatly reduce the available fish popula-

tions in any stream, pond or lake unless voluntary restraint is practiced. A le-

gal limit is not a quota, let your motto be: Limit your kill, don’t kill your lim-

it. MTFA encourages the catch-and-release philosophy of angling, allowing

fish to mature, reproduce and live to fight another day.

6. Multiple recreational use of streams is common. We may share the re-

source with canoes, boats, float tubes etc. It is the responsibility of the canoer

to recognize that the angler has established a position before the canoe floated

into view. The canoer should try to pass behind the angler if at all possible, if

not he should float by quietly with minimum disturbance. Power boats should

always slow down when approaching a angler or other craft. They need to

learn this on Taneycomo. Gary Davisson/Marvin Allision

Project Healing Waters Report by Jim Kissane

National Fly Rod Building Contest Reaches Judging Phase

The rods have been packed and shipped for judging. Now the waiting be-

gins.

Our Greater Kansas City Program of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing is

making its fourth foray into the National Fly Rod Building Contest. Judging

will take place later this month, with the winners announced in May.

Whether it’s Adam Owen building his first fly rod ever, or Dan Kellogg

competing for the third time, participants

bring out their creative best for this com-

petition.

Kellogg (left) hopes to improve on his

third-place finish in last year’s contest.

This year’s entry features a maple handle

and a custom-tooled reel seat. The crown-

ing touch is a dyed partridge feather inlaid

over the interwoven windings on the han-

dle.

Eric Mitchell’s rod (right) is a tribute to the U.S. Navy Seabees, with whom

he spent 20 years. He has incorporated the Seabees’ colors into his rod wind-

ings, and went the extra step of having the symbolism of each color laser-

engraved on the rod’s handle. The rod’s fighting butt includes an inlaid bum-

ble bee.

PHWFF Calendar: Veterans Fishing Day April 7 at Bennett Spring State Park

Missouri’s first Veterans Fishing Day will be Friday, April 7, at Bennett Spring State Park. Veterans can fish

all day (0700-1930 hours) without having to purchase a fishing license or daily trout tag. Veterans are asked

to report to the Park Store to pick up their free Veterans Fishing Day tag. Veterans may fish in any Zone

within the park. A special area of Zone 2 is reserved for Veterans only.

We are planning a day trip to Bennett; contact Bob Barnett or Jim Kissane if you’re interested in participat-

ing. We hope to have a good turnout to start this event and grow it into a state-wide occasion.

Also, keep an eye on your email inbox for information regarding Jim Rogers Fly Casting School. We are try-

ing to schedule the classes in mid-May to line up with the Spring Troutbust May 19-21.
