    GREENFIELD HILL CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

    FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT

    SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 9:00 AND 10:30 A.M.

Our Worship is central to our Service.

Our Service is central to our Worship.

We love kids! But sometimes services are too long for even the happiest child. So ... • For infants we have nursery care in the Church House, first floor. • Any children ages 3 through those entering 2nd grade) are invited to the Church House for church school class, following the Children’s Message • And if your kids get restless, the Parlor (through the double doors) is a comfy place to go to, with toys and a p.a. speaker that carries the service!

    * Please turn off your cell phones during worship! *

    Prelude Trumpet Voluntary Gordon Young

    * Our Kick-Off Prayer (unison):

    Holy and loving God

thank you for the gift of summer!

For pleasant days, beach days, vacation days.

For family gatherings, fun trips, surprise visits.

    For summer rain and rainbows,

    sunshine and eclipses, blooming flowers,

    fresh veggies.

Thank you, God, for being in the middle of it all, even as you are the heart of our Church.

    Amen.

    * Choral Introit (10:30)

    Welcome

Please sign the green registration pad in your pew, and pass it to your neighbor.

Holy, Holy, Holy verse 1 Hymnal, no. 4

O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing verse 1 Hymnal, no. 5

    * Confession Prayer, said together:

Lord, We begin each new anything with the best of intentions

the new school year, new job, new adventure,

new stage in life, new week, new Church Year.

But the road to you-know-where is paved with good intensions!

Forgive us. Forgive us that Church is often 3rd, or 6th, or 11th

    on our “to do” list.

Forgive us that scripture is often our 4th or 9th recourse for wisdom. Forgive us that prayer is often our 5th or 8th strategy for facing the

day. Forgive us for forgetting so easily the source of all that is good.

Amen. (silence for our own prayers of confession)

    * Assurance of Forgiveness

    * Gloria Patri Hymnal, no. 35 (This hymn, sung every Sunday, expresses our gratitude for forgiveness)

    Litany for Strength Forward

Leader: When you come to worship, singing, teaching, or preaching all of

this must be done for the strengthening of the Church. (1 Corinthians 14:26)

People: Love God with all your soul, with all your mind, with all your strength; and love your neighbor as you love yourself. (Deuteronomy 6:5, Mark 12:30)

Leader: God is our strength, our refuge, our shield, our song. (Psalm 46:1; 28:7; 118:14)

People: Hope in the Lord and your strength will be renewed. You will

soar like eagles; you will run and not be weary. (Isaiah 40:31)

Leader: Do not fear for God is with you. Do not be dismayed for God will

strengthen you and help you. (Isaiah 41:10)

People: Through faith God’s people conquered Kingdoms, defeated enemies, administered justice, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, escaped the sword, gained what was

promised when, through faith, weakness was turned to strength.

    (Hebrews 11:33-34)

Leader: For Christ’s sake I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am

    strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10)

People: I know that God can do all things; no plan of God can be thwarted. (Job 42:2)

Leader: Jesus said, some things may be impossible for people, but with God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26)

People: I pray out of God’s glorious riches God will strengthen you with

power through his Spirit in your inner being. (Colossians 1:11)

Unison: May Our Lord Jesus Christ and God who loves us and whose grace gives us eternal encouragement and hope, may God

strengthen you in every good deed and word. (2 Thessalonians 2:17)

P.S. for some of us!: Be disciplined … Therefore, strengthen your feeble

arms and weak knees. (Hebrews 12:7,12)

Commissioning of our Church School Volunteers (and kids!)

    At the 10:30 service

Marcia: (to our Church School volunteers) Friends, God has called you to be the ones through whom our children learn the story of God’s love. We are thankful for your willingness to serve among us, and ask God’s blessing on your ministry.

Volunteers:We have heard God’s call on our lives, and are ready to share the good news of Christ to these children. We pray for the presence of the Spirit, that we may be gifted with openness, truth, creativity, patience and

    delight!

David: (to parents) Parents, will you do all you can to support these friends, your sisters and brothers in faith, as they share the Story with your children?

Parents: We will! We promise to share in teaching God’s love to our children, by talking together, praying together, and living in love together.

Alida: (to the children) Church School kids, will you promise to listen and to

talk, to pray and to laugh, to have a good time, to teach your teachers

sometimes, and to learn all you can about God’s love for you in Jesus? If you’ll do those things, please say “We Promise!”

    Children: We promise!

Alida: (to us all) Let us together pledge our support and care to our kids:

All: We promise you our love so that you will know God’s Love.

We promise you our friendship so that you will know Christ’s

    friendship.

We offer you our joy so that you will know God’s joy.

And together we will be a church of laughter and hope!

    CHURCH NOTES

THANK YOU! What a wonderful summer you have given us. Attendance, ministry, activity, spirit, fellowship, service – a great summer all around. NOW, on to an exciting autumn of ministry.

Visitors: We are glad you are with us today. Want to know more? Take a bag home

from our Visitors’ Table, just outside the front door! If you are interested in joining this church, please just speak with Alida!

At our 9:00 a.m. service, you have been greeted by Deacon Blake Titrud and our Junior Deacons Ian Greenwood and Sam Hawley. At our 10:30 a.m. service, you have been greeted by Deacon Blake Titrud and Junior Deacons Mary Keden and

Justin Keith. Junior Deacons assisting with Church School are Lucy Hermann,

Katie Hinkle, Taylor Horine, Henry Durham, and Carly Jones.

A note about children in worship: We love them! But if you’d prefer to enjoy worship on your own, our Church Nursery for infants-toddlers is across the street in

the Church House. Special beepers/pagers are available to parents so that they may

be quietly contacted during the worship service if their child misses them! If your

child in worship becomes restless or unhappy, please make use of the Parlor (through

the double doors by the choir loft, or head outside and through the side doors). There is a comfortable space there for your child to play with toys and a speaker which

    carries the service!

The flowers on the Communion Table today are given in celebration of a

wonderful kick-off to the Church year!

We have a number of days available this fall for giving flowers on the altar in memory or celebration of someone. The process is incredibly easy, all you need to

do is contact our Flower Chairperson, Lynn Davies at [email protected]

or on her cell at 203-218-0608.

The little graveyard just down Bronson Road is full of people who loved our

church way, way back when, as members and neighbors. Jeff Taylor is restoring

it one person at a time. With a few helpers 90 headstones have been fixed. More hands make for “lighter” work. Jeff has set up three work days for volunteers to help. Can we get 50 people to come out each work day? Come and learn a little history, dig a hole, and have a laugh. Fall volunteer days will all be on Saturdays

from 8:00am-2:00pm but come anytime during the day that works. Sept 9, Sept 30 and Oct 21 Rain date (only if it's pouring) would be that next day/Sunday@noon. Bring good shoes, a shovel and/or a tooth brush. There plenty of work to be done.

Please email Jeff Taylor with questions ([email protected]).

Do you have a child that loves to sing? Have them come be a part of the

GHCC Junior Choir! This year, we are continuing with our new format! Rehearsals will be on Sunday mornings from 8:30-8:55 (except today when rehearsal is at 9:45 due to Kick-Off Sunday). No extra weekday time needed! Parents typically have coffee before the 9:00 service while we sing, and then singers can head off to Sunday school until 10:00 or meet parents in time for worship. What is the time commitment?

    • Rehearsals are almost every Sunday from 8:30 until 8:55 in the Memorial Room (this Sunday only, rehearsal is at 9:45).

    • Performances in church are on several CHURCH FIRST Sundays. • Attendance is ideal each week, but is particularly key the week before each Sunday

performance. Please see the dates on the schedule listed.

What are the Dates that I'll be Needed? Please see the schedule on our website! How Old Do I Need to Be?

    • There is no age minimum or maximum to be involved! That being said, it is easiest if the children can read the words that they will be singing. However, that's not a deal breaker! Recordings and music will be provided to help singers learn and practice the music at home.

    • We would love middle and high school volunteers to help sing with the kids and to help with rehearsals! It would also enable us to perform more challenging repertoire with harmony!

What Will I Be Doing in Rehearsals?

    • A typical rehearsal will begin PROMPTLY at 8:30 with a short warm up. • We will learn different songs and practice singing in unison and 2-3 parts (depending on

the number of singers enrolled.) • We will prepare for church performances • At 8:55, you will be dismissed to your Sunday School Centers or to parents to head to

    worship.

What if I'd Like to Try Choir Before Committing to it?

    • Come to our first rehearsal on Sunday, September 10th at 9:45. Stay for the whole rehearsal and then decide if it is something you'd like!

    How Do I Get Involved?

    • Come on any Sunday!! Or Email Sara Hoefer at [email protected] if you are interested!!
