Stimulating Indian industry’s investments in R&D and

technology acquisitions through sharing of risks and global

technology partnership

Background India has an excellent indirect incentive in the form of 200%

Weighted Tax Deduction on industry’s expenditure in

R&D. But direct incentives through flexible funding

support for industrial R&D with writing–off of failures was

missing.

India’s international technology cooperation has so far

been limited to institutional collaborations in academic

research – industry were not made involved

Thus, India’s private sector’s low investment in R&D

resulted in less number of R&D professionals produced

and engaged leading to less number of patents filed and

commercialized and finally resulted in low value addition

in manufacturing and low high technology exports

Incorporation of GITA In 2011, a PPP, not–for–profit Company named “Global Innovation

& Technology Alliance” (GITA) was incorporated jointly by the

Technology Development Board (TDB) of the Department of

Science & Technology (DST), Govt of India and the Confederation

of Indian Industry (CII).

GITA was given a clear mandate to implement Government’s direct

incentives/funds to stimulate industry’s investment in R&D,

technology acquisition, technology development & demonstration

with Indian and global industry and institutional partners to deliver

commercialisable products and services to Indian and global

markets.

In order to provide sufficient flexibility to GITA, the majority (51%)

share of GITA’s seed capital has been invested by CII’s key

member companies and the minority share (49%) has been

invested by Government of India.
