ABOUT US
We are a partner of UKaid funded Communicable Disease - Health Service Delivery (COMDIS-HSD) research consortium, led by the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development, University of Leeds, UK.
OBJECTIVES OF ARK’S INITIATIVES
To enhance capacity of service providers for early detection and management of selected NCDs at UpHC and CC
To establish a referral linkage from CC to Upazila Health Complex
To create awareness among population about NCD risk factors
MAJOR ACTIVITIES Development phase:
Skilled-based training material: Desk guide and Job-Aid
Treatment card ACSM materials
Intervention phase: Training provided to CHCPs Training provided to MOs and Nurses Monitoring and supervision
APPROACH
Bringing national and international experts together for planning and developing training materials
TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP MEETING

ARK’S EXPERIENCE: ACHIEVEMENTS
Increased referral from OPD to NCD Corner
Increased referral from CC On an average 30 NCD (diabetic and
hypertensive) patients recruited per month
Improved record keeping and follow up Discussion on NCD during monthly CHCP
meeting at UpHC
ARK’S EXPERIENCE: CHALLENGES Service providers are not available full
time at NCD corners Limited referral from OPD than expected Limited follow-up mechanism Record keeping for individual patient Drugs are not always available Some laboratory tests are not available
at UpHC No assigned person for counseling Limited referral from CCs than expected Capacity of CHCPs Sustainability!
RECOMMENDATION Orientation of health
educators/counselors Assigning fulltime doctors and health
educators at NCD corners Supply of medicine for hypertensive and
diabetic patients Record keeping and reporting Orient doctors at OPD, and CHCPs for
referral to NCD corners Introduction of treatment cards for
proper follow up.
RECOMMENDATION
Strengthen public awareness activities to promote healthy lifestyle
Integrate NCD in primary/secondary education curriculum
Incorporating NCDs curriculum with primary care focus in pre-service and in-service training
Continue Action research to improve service delivery at primary healthcare level
