What is Stress?
• Physiological or Biological Stress is an organism's response to a stressor such as an environmental condi7on or a s7mulus.
• Stress is a body's method of reac4ng to a challenge. • According to the stressful event, the body's way to respond to
stress is by sympathe4c nervous system ac7va7on which results in the fight-‐or-‐flight response.
• In humans, stress typically describes a nega7ve condi7on or a

What is Burnout?
• Burnout is a psychological term that refers to long-‐term exhaus4on and diminished interest in work.
• The Maslach Burnout Inventory uses a three-‐dimensional descrip7on of exhaus4on, cynicism, and inefficacy (inefficiency & ineffec7ve).
• The an4thesis of burnout as engagement, which is characterised by energy, involvement and efficacy, the opposites of exhaus7on, cynicism and inefficacy.

Effects of Stress on the Body
Burnout/Adrenal Burnout
• Adrenal glands secrete stress hormones (eg. adrenaline) to prepare body for acute emo7onal & physical stress
• When you keep pushing yourself, adrenal glands will fa7gue & won’t be able to produce enough adrenaline
• Adrenal fa7gue causes fa7gue, cravings, weight gain, mood swings & other health problems
