Thank you for attending our annual meeting and for your continued interest and support of the CIP. Our 2012-2013 season proved to be both challenging and rewarding. The behind the scenes work that went into presenting an extremely successful concert season was considerable. David worked tirelessly to adapt the season’s music and orchestra composition to construct a program that best suited the Phil and our guest artists. At times the changes were daunting. David did a great job. The entire paid staff, Board of Directors and the Notables worked hard to promote concerts, sell tickets, explore new funding streams through sponsors and grants and continue our outreach to our school children through music. Our Adventure Concert series this spring exposed over three thousand grade school children to live orchestral music. Before that, many of them had never had that experience. We also used staff and volunteers to plan and execute this year’s Phil!tastic Gala and our “Jammin’ with the Stars” event which celebrated the over 50 year career of Columbus’ own “Music Man” Tom Pickett. Was everything a complete success? Did we meet all of our goals? Of course, the answer is no. I know of no organization that does. I do know that we will continue to set high goals and standards and do our very best to fulfill our mission of creating, education, advocating and perpetuating music in and for our great community. To all of you who have supported us in any way, we say “Thank You.” We look forward to continuing our relationship, meeting your expectations and providing high quality, orchestral entertainment unlike any other in Columbus.

Treasurer’s Report Fiscal Year 2012-2013The Philharmonic experienced a successful financial year. Revenue exceeded expense by over $62,000. As a result we improved our cash and short term investments to $218,000 relative to total assets of $261,000. The concert season was an unqualified success as proven by the response to such concerts as the Canadian Brass, the Harmon sisters, Susie Park and the always popular Holiday concerts. The support of our Education initiatives was also quite evident and we are grateful to those who have stepped forward to recognize this all important part of our quest.

For the coming year, as in the past year, we will budget to break even in which we will endeavor to expend only as much as we budget for income. Last year our actual income was $672,000. For the coming year we are projecting that amount to be $659,000. As always, this will challenge the board but with your continued support we feel confident this challenge can be met. We have, we do and we will always appreciate your interest in the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic.

Dear Philharmonic friends and supporters,Response to our 2012-13 season was incredibly positive. From the enormous impact of the Canadian Brass (who knew their leader was also a stand-up comic?!!!) to the absolutely stunning and mesmerizing Susie Park, there was such superb artistry during this past year. Everyone seemed to be “blown away” by the February concert with Marja, Chasten and Cam,

and Beethoven’s Ninth drew an immediate standing, cheering ovation and a warm review: “…fearless conductor David Bowden of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic took [a performance of the “taxing” Beethoven 9] last Saturday night in addition to two other substantive works on the program and produced an electrifying evening that brought the large and enthusiastic audience to its feet with shouts of bravo.”

Each concert was unique and created its own special memory. One personal goal in choosing the repertoire for the season was to encourage season ticket holders to share the experience with others, introducing new people to the Philharmonic experience. Over the course of this past year, I have met many people who are new to the Philharmonic – expressing their delight at finding such musical quality in a “small city.” I think that we can be very proud of the excellence that we experienced together this past season!

Columbus is a remarkable community, and the Philharmonic is an essential component of what makes this community special. We are deeply woven into the fabric of our city, and more and more people are taking note of how intrinsically integral our involvement has become,

• from CICC and PYO to our Adult Chorus, • from our amazing string classes in partnership with BCSC to

Music Matters in collaboration with Partners in Education, • from brass ensembles playing on a street corner to Youth

Orchestra involvement at Toyota and local churches, • from excellent recordings for the general public to enjoy to

compelling and engaging concerts.

We are achieving our mission.

It is a joy and a privilege to be your Music Director.

Dear Donors, Sponsors and Friends, The 2012-2013 season was an exciting year to step in as the Executive Director of the Philharmonic. Not only was attendance at our concerts up, we had a sell-out crowd for our Live from New York concert in February. The Philharmonic educational programs (Strings in the Schools, PYO, CICC, the Choral Festival, Strings Camp, Jammin’ with The Phil and the JCB Adventure Concerts) reached over 6,000 children

this year. Our CICC, PYO and Philharmonic musicians performed in a variety of non-traditional settings, sharing the joy of music at both private and public gatherings.

The Board, Notables, staff and committees worked hard to ensure that each of our concerts, programs and community engagements delivered the highest quality music and educational experience possible. Based on the reaction of our audiences and students, the year was a resounding hit.

As reflected in the Treasurer’s Report, it was also a successful year financially. With just 21% of our revenue from concert ticket sales, our ability to provide these musical experiences is dependent on individuals, companies and foundations that support the mission of the Philharmonic. We are exceedingly grateful for this broad base of support.

Sincere thanks to all who donated their time, their talent and their treasure to make this past year a success. We’re looking forward to a bright future filled with beautiful music.

Our vision is to enhance the quality of life in our community so that all citizens have the opportunity to be touched by live, high-quality music in a manner and style meaningful to them.

Our artistic policy is to present and teach a balance of the best orchestral, choral and chamber repertoire from all periods and styles, including all genres of American music and music of our time.
