Constructing Star Blocks

1. Flying Geese Units. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) 3¼” H square. Place square, RST, at a corner of (1) 3¼” x 6” I rectangle. Sew on drawn line. Trim ¼” away from sewn line. Open and press to reveal (1) H corner triangle. Repeat with another 3¼” H square at the opposite corner of the same 3¼” x 6” I rectangle to complete (1) flying geese unit. Make a total of (4) flying geese units.

2. Sew (2) flying geese units to the opposite sides of (1) 6” D square to make a row unit.

3. Sew (2) 3¼” I squares to the opposite short sides of (1) 3¼” x 6” flying geese unit to make a row unit. Make a total of (2) row units.

4. Sew together row units to complete (1) Star Block. Square to 11-1/2”.

5. Make a total number of Star Blocks for each of the following combinations:

6. Star Unit. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) 1¾” I square. Place square, RST, at a corner of (1) 1¾” x 3” H rectangle. Sew on drawn line. Trim ¼” away from sewn line. Open and press to reveal I corner triangle. Repeat with another 1¾” I square at the opposite corner of the same 1¾” x 3” H rectangle to complete (1) flying geese unit. Make a total of (4) flying geese units.

7. Sew (2) flying geese units to the opposite sides of (1) 3” I square to make a row unit.

8. Sew (1) 1¾” H square to each side of (1) flying geese unit to make a row unit. Repeat to make (2) row units.

9. Sew together row units to complete (1) Star Unit, measuring 5½” x 5½” raw edge to raw edge.

10. Sew together (3) 1½” x 6½” K rectangles and (2) 1½” x 6½” I rectangles as shown. Square to 5½” x 6½”. Sew unit to the right of star unit. Unit should measure 5½” x 11½”.

11. Sew together (3) 1½” x 11½” K rectangles and (3) 1½” x 11½” I rectangles and add to the bottom of previously sewn section to complete (1) Flag Block. Square to 11½”.

12. Make a total of (4) Flag Blocks for each of the following fabric ( <blue print> / <red print> / background fabric) combinations:

Quilt Top Assembly

13. Pieced Rows. Arrange and sew together (4) Flag Blocks and (3) Star Blocks to make pieced rows #1,3,5,7. Arrange and sew together (4) Star Blocks and (3) Flag Blocks to make pieced rows #2, 4, 6, 8. Use Quilt Diagram on Page 7 as a reference.

14. Sew pieced rows together to complete quilt top.

Finishing

15. With the backing fabric laying taut, place batting and then quilt top to form quilt sandwich.

16. Baste and quilt as desired.

17. Bind with B to finish quilt.
