Guidelines to follow at St. John Neumann Parish

Congregants should plan on restricted seating, a change in

the reception of Communion in order to ensure social

distancing, and other appropriate measures upon entering

and exiting churches. The dispensation from the obligation to attend

Sunday Mass remains in place. All who are espe-

cially vulnerable or simply uncomfortable attending

a public Liturgy are encouraged to remain at home

and if possible, view Mass via live streams, which

will continue in local parishes.

If you are SICK, stay home and limit your contact with others.

Please be concerned about others.

*Never Forget Sanitizer and Mask when

you come to Church*

Parishioners should bring and be prepared to wear their own

masks and, a bottle of hand sanitizer for use upon entering,

before receiving Communion, after receiving Communion,

and after exiting the church.

Today’s Readings:

Jeremiah 20: 7-9 Romans 12: 1-2

Matthew 16: 21-27

When Jeremiah heard the word of the LORD, it burned so fiercely in his heart that he had to proclaim it, even though it brought him derision and reproach. We have the opportunity to hear the word of the Lord

every time we celebrate the Eucharist. Does it burn fire within our hearts? Does it leave us no choice but to proclaim it? Does it transform

our lives? Or have we forgotten it by the time Mass is over? Let us open our hearts today to the word of God.

Next week’s readings:

Ezekiel 33: 7-9 Romans 13: 8-10

Matthew 18: 15-20

A VOCATION VIEW Discipleship of Christ requires dying to self, and making of

ourselves living sacrifices to Him. How are you called to offer

yourself? Are you being called to be a priest, deacon, brother

or sister? Humbly ask the Lord. If God is calling you to a

Church vocation, call Fr. Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535

FAITH FORMATION NEWS

As summer begins to fade, we look towards all the new possibilities in

store for us this year. We hope this year will be a time of grace and

growing in faith, knowledge, and wisdom. As we embark on this new

year in our faith journey, we have scheduled our 2020-2021 Faith

Formation Kickoff meeting for September, 20th immediately following

the 10:30 am Mass. It is vitally important that someone from each family

(or someone to represent your family) is present, as we have so much to

go over!

of the rosary.

Cross and Crown

The Gospel of Christ is a coin with two sides: the Cross and the Crown. If we try to embrace one side, the glorious side, and reject the other, the suffering side, we falsify the gospel. The same Jesus who said, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28) also said, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it” (Matt. 16:24-25). Do we come to Jesus then to be freed from our burdens or do we come to Jesus to take on the cross? We come to Jesus to be freed from our meaningless and futile burdens and, in its place, take on the cross that leads to salvation and glory.

Today’s gospel challenges us to say no to the very attractive but one-sided worldly gospel of instant glory, a sugar-coated gospel that offers the false promise of “all crown and no cross.” Did you ever hear it on the television: “Only believe and everything will go well with you?” It did not all go well with Jesus; he still had to endure the cross. It did not all go well with Mary; a sword of sorrow still pierced her soul. It did not all go well with the countless men and women saints who have gone before us. Why then should it all go well with you and me? In the face of disappointment, bereavement, sickness, ingratitude and failure, our faith response should be, not to question “Why me?” but to recognize that these crosses and contradictions are the necessary condition for our future glory. The world is the place for the cross. The place for the crown is heaven.
