Page 3: Sts. Anne & Joachim Catholic Church · 7/19/2020  · social media in ways that are simply not necessary. TV is good – but too much TV is not. Too much of anything is never good

SOCIAL MEDIA – ENOUGH ALREADY!

Life is . . . a bit stressful right now, isn't it? It's not so much the kind of stress associated with

particular events or happenings, although those kinds of things are still happening, too. I'm talking about a

kind of on-going, under-the-radar kind of stress that just kind of foments anxiety and fear, not in a big, obvious way, but in ways

that make daily life just kind of burdensome . . . at least more than it should be. For example – doesn’t it seem like this coronavirus

pandemic episode with the associated restrictions has been going on a long time? . . . and it's only been four months! Doesn't it

seem like we've been "in this" for much longer than four months? It would seem that life just seems a bit "heavier" than it should at

this time. At least I feel it like that – and I'm thinking many others do, too.

I bring this up because when I talk to people and hear about this from others there often seems to be a familiar aspect to

many people's experiences: they are also being (or allowing themselves to be) overwhelmed by social media and the constant

cacophony of negativity that is so much a part of that platform. Like it or not, we have built a large part of our lives on social

media – to stay informed of things, to keep in touch with others, to plan a day or some event in our lives, or even to shop and stay

ahead of daily duties. And that's all fine as far as it goes. But there's a lot of negativity and stress-inducers that come along with

social media – and one of the biggest is simply the never-ending stream of negative (and sometimes even inaccurate) "news"

reporting that simply brings on feelings of anger, frustration, envy, and calumny/gossip.

Frankly, there is a lot of negativity in the world today – we have to learn how to deal with it. But I'm talking about what

can sometimes turn into our obsessive/addictive behavior of constantly "checking" on the various platforms of social media for stuff

that reinforces that angst. Do I really need to check news websites 20 times a day? Do I really need to continue to read all the

negative comments that people blog and post each and every day, and opinion after opinion after opinion about what the world

should be like according to them? Does that do me any good? Does that kind of thing just frustrate me? Do I really need to watch

videos and other youtube-type shorts that in the long run simply frustrate me with their agendas?

That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about here. WE can control how much of that social media stuff we allow into our

system. Some of it may be good – but some of it is certainly bad, and too much of it is never healthy. I would strongly encourage

everyone to "disconnect" a bit from social media. Turn down the volume, turn off the screen, pick up a good book to read or just be

still and enjoy a fine Fargo summer evening – and perhaps most of all, take some of that quiet time in your life to spend it in prayer

with Our Lord. There's enough stress in trying to navigate this COVID world as is – we don't need to aggravate our system with

repetitive rants and "news" that often is not new at all and is often meant to provoke and instigate unhealthy reactions.

It's up to you, of course. Perhaps your particular way of life needs to be connected to all this technological stuff – but don’t

be surprised if your quality of life begins to dip if you try to increase the quantity of your life by multi-tasking constantly through

social media in ways that are simply not necessary. TV is good – but too much TV is not. Too much of anything is never good

(with the one exception of love – one can never love too much or be loved too much). And social media can be good – but too

much social media is not.

Enjoy the rest of the summer – it's all too short around here. But it's all the more sweet because of that, if we take the

opportunity to enjoy it.

July 19-25 is National Natural Family Planning Awareness Week!

Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods represent authentic family planning. They can be used to both achieve and to postpone a pregnancy. NFP makes use of periodic abstinence … in order to space births or to limit the number of children when there is a serious reason to do so… this practice fosters in couples an attitude of respect and wonder in the face of human life, which is sacred. It also fosters profound respect for one’s spouse, which is necessary for… authentic intimacy. (Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2009, p. 20)

Find out more about what Natural Family Planning can do for

your marriage by visiting www.fargodiocese.org/nfp. While
