Third Sunday of Advent

December 15, 2019 Vol. XXXV, No. 50 2

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday, December 16 Nm 24:2-7, 15-17a; Mt 21:23-27 Tuesday, December 17 Gn 49:2, 8-10; Mt 1:1-17 Wednesday, December 18 Jer 23:5-8; Mt 1:18-25 Thursday, December 19 Jgs 13:2-7, 24-25a; Lk 1:5-25 Friday, December 20 7:10-14; Lk 1:26-38 Saturday, December 21 Sg 2:8-14; Lk 1:39-45 Sunday, December 22 Is 7:10-14; Rom 1:1-7; Mt 1:18-24

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The barren de-serts will rejoice and flower (Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10). Second Reading — Be pa ent, for the coming of the Lord is as sure as the rain (James 5:7-10). Gospel — Tell of what you hear and see: The blind regain their vision, the crippled their move-ment, the deaf their hearing (Ma hew 11:2-11).

THE PROPHET’S PROFIT Old Testament prophets were not very popular. Most were killed or exiled because they challenged people to follow God’s commands. John the Bap-

st suffered the same way. So what kept the prophets going? First of all, the prophets had faith in God. They believed that God spoke through them, that God would protect them and support them. Second, they had pa ence. They kept going when people rejected their preaching. Some prophets had to be pa ent with their own weaknesses. The third gi of the prophets was hope, hope that by keeping God’s commands, God’s people would be renewed, along with all of crea on. Our first reading is an example of such hope, with its descrip ons of de-serts becoming gardens and the sick and disabled being healed and strengthened. So what do we learn from those prophets? First, we need to keep our faith in God strong. If you go to church once a week, the bare minimum, it would be like exercising only once a week and thinking that will keep you in shape. Second, we need pa ence, and not just with our kids. We need to be pa ent with ourselves and with God. Some people stop going to church because they don’t see any spiritual growth in themselves. So be pa ent; don’t expect to become a saint right away. Finally, the reading from Isaiah gives us hope that God will open our eyes of faith, clear our ears to hear God’s word (Isaiah 35:5), and “meet Him with joy and glad-ness” (Isaiah 35:10). Tom Schmidt THE NATIVITY SCENE

Do you remember having a Na vity scene, or crèche, set up in your house growing up as a child? If not, perhaps you can recall visi ng the crèche at church, even if it was to snatch a piece of hay to put into Mom’s purse. What-ever the case, we all know that it is that

me of year when we see a manger filled with animals and figures from the Bible.

It was St. Francis of Assisi that created the first documented living Na-vity scene in the 13th century and then that led to sta onary scenes of

terraco a figures in many Italian churches. These scenes were not specifi-cally intended for Advent or Christmas, as they were o en mes on dis-play all year round. In the 16th century, we began seeing Na vity scenes in the homes of wealthy Italian families. As the centuries went by, the prac ce spread throughout Europe and beyond. Today, you can find Na vity sets made of all types of materials and in all parts of the world. In Germany, par cularly, the custom developed where the baby Jesus was withheld from the manger un l Christmas. Some mes, only animals were placed in the manger, with various human figures making their de-but as the days leading up to Christmas passed. To this day, many families maintain a tradi on where a child of the family will ritually place the baby Jesus into the manger on Christmas day. O en mes, the Magi appear on Epiphany as well. There are no steadfast rules on how to display your crèche or of what materials it should be made. We should look at it the same way we look at displaying photos of our loved ones. The figures inside the manger re-mind us of the real people and the real Jesus Christ. The scene helps us to be ever mindful of the great love God has for us: a love so great He would become one of us in the Incarna on.

Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy.

Isaiah 35:10

The Greatest Gi We Can Ever Receive Dr. Sco Hahn reveals what scholars know about the shepherds, the mysterious Magi and King Herod. Your Advent journey will take on a new meaning. This illumina ng presenta on is sure to help you grow in apprecia on of the greatest gi ever given to mankind—Jesus Christ.

December 15, 2019 Vol. XXXV, No. 50 4 A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT From the loneliness of his prison cell, John the Bap st asks of Je-sus: “Are You the one Who is to come, or should we look for anoth-er?” The weeks before Christmas offer much to be joyous about, cele-bra ng with family and friends, the gli er of seasonal decora ons, the excitement of gi -giving and receiving. But in our midst, there are the lonely and neglected, the poor, the hospitalized, the wayward, the shut-ins. There are those who feel that they have no hope. To whom should they look? Discipleship in the Lord includes being good stew-ards of others. Are there those in our family, our neighborhood, our community to whom we can reach out to show them a sign of Christ’s presence in their midst?

ADVENT PRAYER WEEK 3: JOY Dear Jesus,

Help us focus on You during this busy season. May we stay aware of the joy You bring into our lives. We want to find You in the every-day moments and come with hearts of gra tude to Your man-ger on Christmas. Amen.

PETER CANISIUS—DECEMBER 21 (1521-1597) This doctor of the church was born in Holland and studied canon law in Belgium before turning to the study of theology in Germany. He en-tered the Society of Jesus in 1543 and soon was a well-known preacher. He a ended two sessions of the Council of Trent and was an important figure in the post-conciliar Catholic revival in Europe. As the Jesuit provincial in southern Germany, Austria and Bohemia, he started schools, colleges and seminar-ies, and is credited with keeping the southern Ger-man peoples Catholic.

CHURCH COOKBOOK Do you have a special recipe you are willing to share? An extraordinary dessert that is a family favorite? A recipe from your grandmother or one that you found somewhere that was just scrump ous? If so, please share it with the Church Office. We are working on a project to col-lect recipes from members of the parish and assemble them into a Sts. Peter & Paul Church Cookbook. Once we have collected the recipes, a professionally bound cookbook will be pub-lished. This is a fundraising project to support our church. The best part—we aren’t asking for your money, we are asking for your recipes to put into the cookbook. With your help, we can produce a cookbook that highlights some of the best recipes and raises money for the church at the same me. Recipe(s) can be placed in the collec on baskets at Mass or dropped off at the Church Office. Will you please help us fill our cookbook with something delicious?

OFFICE SCHEDULE The Church Office will be closed Tuesday, December 24 and Wednesday, December 25. We will reopen Thursday, December 26 at 1:00 p.m. We will also be closed Tuesday, December 31 and Wednesday, January 1. We will reopen Thursday, January 2 at 2:00 p.m.
