Impact of the IssueCampus Centers help provide opportunities for
students to spend time on campus and interact with others.
Studies have shown that student involvement is critical to success and engagement.
Campus Centers are often among the first buildings introduced to new students, so positive association to the building is imperative.
Impact of the IssueTraditional, undergraduate students tend to receive
the majority of resources and attention.
The campus center is a good place for graduate students or commuter and other non-traditional students to go to receive important information and resources.
Providing a home on campus for all students is essential, and the campus center must work to serve a diverse student population.
Viewpoints:Administrators
Campus centers are not just a place for students to meet and hangout, but it is also a place where faculty, administrators and trustees could meet for meetings and events.
Students must remember that it is called a “Campus center” not a “student center”
Want the campus center to be intended to both create a campus crossroads, among students and others on campus, and to bring a variety of student services together under one roof.
Viewpoints:Students
Students are a Major Deciding Factor Evaluate service, satisfaction, representation Togetherness, belonging
Campus Community Creating a stronger student/administrator relationship Giving back to donors, ignoring student needs Proper space allocation for students and administration NC State GLBT Center, created separate space
Valuing Community of Different Population of Students Understanding student values and sense of campus community
Previous Solutions
San Diego State University: AZTEC CENTER
Equipped for 10,000 students SDSU brought in Brailsdford & Dunlavey Helped SDSU consider vision for the future Increased student enrollment to 35,000 by 2025 Run focus groups to gain constitute input
Facilities Planning, Design & Construction
In charge of creating a final proposal that would be financially feasible
Based on the findings SDSU:
Planned for a new center that would meet green certification
Gained student support to pass a fee referendum to cover the cost of the center
Ultimately, included everyone in the entire decision making process
Evaluation
Kvale’s (2007) expertise reminds us of the significance that group dynamics can have on focus groups results.
Power dynamics: can give some the opportunity to dominate the conversation
Chain of command can silence some: those in lower levels in the chain of command may withhold their true opinions out of intimidation or fear of losing their job
EvaluationLooking through Bolman & Deal’s (2003) Political
Frame:As leaders we must “influence behavior to change the
course of events, to overcome resistance, and to get people to do things they would not otherwise do” (Pfeffer, 1992, p. 30).
Intervention Goals, Solutions, and Strategies: Honor the Student Perspective
Create a special committee for the Campus Center Space Situation, involving the students
Student government/associated students and Kellogg administrators.
Students are a key component for administrators to learn how to make an institution better.
Center belongs to student life, must provide services for their academic development.
Intervention Goals, Solutions and Strategies: Work to Combine Offices
Determine which departments do not need to move from their current space
Combine similar offices into a shared spaceHealth Services with Medical ServicesResidential Education, Parent Programs, and Greek LifeProgram Board and Undergraduate Student

Intervention Goals, Solutions and Strategies: Organize All Available Space
Create sub-sections within the student affairs division which can be placed togetherPotential sub-sections: Academic Cultural Student Involvement and Leadership

Intervention Goals, Solutions and Strategies: Annual Kickoff Celebration
Held at the new campus center
Help build a sense of community between all university constituents
Remind even those departments that are not occupying the campus center about the importance of our programs and services
Bring back a sense of empowerment to students and staff
