STUDENT AND PARENT CAMP BOOKLET 2019
In the Booklet there is a very detailed “Camping and Clothing” information sheet and it is very important that this is followed.
At this stage camp buses will depart from Wise Street at 8:00 am on Monday 18 February, therefore your daughter needs to be at school by 7:30 am. There will be a brief stop at Cooma on the way to Tathra. This is intended to be for morning tea and a toilet break so please make sure that your daughter has eaten breakfast before boarding the bus. Students will need to bring a substantial morning tea and lunch with them as the first meal provided at camp is afternoon tea. A return stop will depend on traffic and timing, as our goal is to return to school at the scheduled time. We estimate that we should return to Merici at 5.30 pm Wednesday 20 February.
Your daughter will have had a busy few days so please be punctual in collecting her. Supervision will be limited after the last bus arrives, so it is essential that students be collected promptly at 5.30 pm. Should there be an unforeseen emergency and you cannot collect your daughter at 5.30 pm you must contact the College on 6243 4100 to alert the school of the problem before 3:30 pm. Please leave a return mobile number so you can be contacted. It is important to note that you must phone before 3:30 pm as the school switchboard will close. An alternative mobile number will be provided when students are given their camp booklets and information.
The cost of the camp has been included in your Term 1 school fees. The cost includes accommodation, the rental of all equipment required, activities staff, insurance, transport to and from camp, food provision and a Camp T-shirt.
If you have any questions or concerns about the camp, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to getting to know your daughter on the 2019 Year 7 Camp.
Yours sincerely
Virginia McLeod Head of Junior School

CAMP ACTIVITIES Surf Safety at Tathra Surf Life Saving Club
Coastlife’s signature camp activity is the Surf Safety Program. This
three hour educational session is delivered at a local surf lifesaving club by qualified surf life savers. The
students are introduced to the features of the club house, the rescue equipment and are provided with a first-
hand insight into how a beach patrol works. The surf safety program aims to reduce the risks in the aquatic
environment and extend each participant’s knowledge and understanding of surf survival skills.
The program begins with a short interactive presentation in the surf lifesaving club. This is followed by a tour of
the club house facilities and rescue equipment. The students will then head down onto the sand for an
energetic game of beach flags, shallow water wading races and body boarding in the waves.
Raft Building Activity at Wallagoot Lake
Raft building is the ultimate water based team building activity. Clear safety instructions and basic knot tying
skills are explained before the group is split into two teams. They are then given a set amount of time to design
and build a raft with the equipment provided. The session peaks with a competitive raft race between the
two vessels on the lake.
Holey Pipe Challenge at Wallagoot Lake
This hilarious team challenge will be facilitated on the shores of Wallagoot Lake near the raft building activity.
The students will get wet up to their knees so this activity combines well with the raft building session. The
students will move between the two water activities in their swimwear.
Coastal Walk to Bournda Lagoon
The students will be guided on a coastal discovery walk through the southern part of Bournda National Park.
The route will pass through tea tree thickets, coastal woodlands and past Bondi Lake. The students will carry
day packs with a snack, water bottle, swimmers and towel so they can enjoy a cooling swim in the tannin
enriched waters of Bournda Lagoon. Fascinating ecological interpretation and bush tucker knowledge will be
provided by the Coastlife leaders along the way. This is an easy level route and there is 2WD vehicle access to
Bournda Lagoon so students who are unable to walk can be transported to this point to meet up with the
group for a swim.
Team Building Challenges close to the campsite
The students will participate in a dry activity session designed to build trust, respect and improve
The program will include a billy cart challenge that involves the students communication between individuals.
working together in teams of four to construct a simple billy cart. Each group must race their cart around a flat
grassy course and then dismantle their vehicle. The success of each team is reliant on their ability to work
constructively together, as points are rewarded for teamwork, as well as for speed and skill.
