REGULAR MEETINGS AND LECTURERS
Since the chapter began in 2009 that members and former members
the chapter make presentations on economic geology in order to
teach undergraduate students about the different aspects in this area.
During the period from February to June of 2018, we focused on the
study of Cordilleran veins, Manto ore copper, Mississippi Valley Type
and Lamprophyre dykes. These types of deposits were visited during the
VI conference Metallogenic field "Luis Daniel Sáenz." In addition, we
have the participation of a former member of the SEG who gave us a
talk on basic concepts of structural geology applied to exploration.

Academic conferences June – November
In the second academic semester we focused on reinforcing basic
mineralogy and making an introduction to economic geology for new
chapter members. Likewise, during this period we concentrated on
studying the geochemistry associated with the genesis of the emeralds
in Colombia, afterwards we made a field trip to the western emerald
belt in order to consolidate the knowledge acquired during the
semester. In the last sessions of our academic meetings we will study
geochemical analysis techniques in order to apply them to our
research projects.

I . Mineralogy Workshops
On the 27th of August and 3rd of September of the current year we made two
mineralogy workshops, this events took place on mondays from 11am to 1pm in the
department of geosciences at the national university of Colombia in Bogotá, the
workshops proceeded as follows. The first session (27/08) was divided in a theoretical
part regarding mineral properties and a practical part in which we focused on
translucent mineral i.e. the rock-forming minerals.
Advertisements for the basic mineralogy sessions displayed in the geosciences department
and online. Left, focusing on rock-forming minerals and right focusing on ore-forming
minerals.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
This first session developed according to schedule with an attendance of around 25
students, most of them in their freshmen and sophomore years; we divided this group
in 4 distinct tables, each with different related minerals, then, when the correct
identification of all the minerals in the table was achieved we switched the students
so they could learn and identify another group of minerals in a different table.
The students used all the basic methods of mineral identification i.e. color, luster,
streak, Mohs hardness, cleavage and fracture all explained on the theoretical part
of the session and during the practice; the students counted on diluted hydrochloric
acid and magnifying glasses for further testing.
First session of the mineralogy workshop.
The second session (03/09) dealt with opaque minerals i.e. ore-forming minerals,
oxides and sulfides, again the session was divided in two parts, the first one was
theoretical and concerned the basic properties of this minerals and a basic context
of deposits in which they are commonly found, with a focus on occurrences in
Colombia, the second part was the correct interpretation of different ore minerals
in hand specimen, with attention to commonly associated minerals.
The attendance for this session was bigger than the first one, with around 30 students,
again, divided in several tables each with related minerals. In this session we made
use of some recently collected specimens from the Yellowstone metallogeny
conference earlier this year, specially galena and stibnite.
Second session of the mineralogy workshop.
SEG Student Chapter
II. “Knowing something else about
minerals”
In the seedbed number 3, after the workshops of mineralogy, in which we worked
about: oxides, sulfides and silicates, with the intention of deepening into the physical
characteristics of each one them, we carried out an integration activity called
"Knowing something more about minerals" Through which we sought to encourage
students research. Each one had to perform a research of the characteristics of a
mineral that they chose, compile and reflect the information in a table that would
be exposed to all the participants, in that table, they had to write about: the physical
characteristics of the mineral (texture, hardness, color, exfoliation, density, crystalline
system, etc.), location, field (mineral deposit), deposits in Colombia and in the world,
utility, chemical composition, an image of the mineral and description of its genesis,
environments and other curious data.
The exhibitions were a success, the students showed interest in doing the research
and paid enough attention to each of the exhibitors. Some of the minerals that were
exposed were: Stibane, Realgar, Hessite, Molybdenum, goethite, hematite, native
gold, native copper, tyuyamunite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, emeralds, beryl,
pyrrhotite, bismuth, specular hematite, Hornblende, labradorite, Montmorillonite,
fluorite, tourmaline, chalcopyrite, etc.
After each exhibition, the pertinent questions were asked to clarify doubts, the
tables through which the exhibitions were made, were collected with the intention
of pasting them throughout the department of geosciences, to show everyone our
activity, and we are happy to say that participated between 20 and 25 students,
after the activity we went to the classroom and there, our president Camila Lopez
and our vice president Rafael explained the formation of some deposits such as
placer deposits, porphyries (Cu, Mo, Au) hydrothermal deposits of different sulfur,
and clarified terms such as: Epithermal, hypothermal, para-genesis, syn-genesis, and
other technicalities referring to permeability, depth, temperature, and
continentality. In conclusion we can appreciate the interest of the participants to
continue attending the seedbed and their willingness to participate in the proposed
activities.

VISIT TO THE WESTERN EMERALD BELT

INTRODUCTION
Colombian emeralds are in Cretacic sedimentary sequence in the eastern
cordillera in the west flank in Muzo, Quípama, La Palma, La Victoria, Otanche
and San Pablo de Borbur, also known as western belt.
The eastern belt which is formed by the towns as Ubalá, Chivor, Macanal and
Santa María. For that reason, we planned to visit the western and eastern
emerald belts in order to make a comparison in terms of mineralogy, fluids
dynamic, origin and structural controls which suggest a tectonic control
associated with regional and minor faults that are affecting the sedimentary
sequence as veins or extensional fractures.
The Student Chapter of the National University of
Colombia, Bogota, thanks the Society of Economic
Geologist, the Faculty of Sciences and the
Department of Geology of the National University
of Colombia, for giving us the means to learn and
share knowledge in the area of economic
geology.
In particular, we would like to thank the projects La
Marina and San Antonio for contributing to our
knowledge of Colombian emeralds, through
different activities developed during the
respective visits, which include presentations and
visits to the exploitation fronts.
We want to thank geologists Andrés Felipe
Gonzales Javier García Toloza, and Timoleon
Garzon for sharing their experience and resolving
our concerns regarding the complex genesis of
Colombian emeralds.
The student chapter organized and directed this visit to the western emerald belt
with the participation of 17 students and in collaboration with the SGA Student
Chapter. This short field visit was held on September 28, 29 and 30, during which
we had the opportunity to visit three different projects.

SUMMARY
• September 28:
We begin our field trip with an introductory talk on the regional geology,
geochemistry and genesis associated with the emerald deposits located in the
western belt. This talk was led by the Geologist and former president of the SEG,
Andrés Felipe Gonzales and the geologist Javier García Toloza who has
extensive experience in emerald certification and research.
After the introductory talk, we moved to the municipality of Pauna, located in
the department of Boyacá, four hours from the city of Bogotá.
September 29:
During the morning we visited the "La Marina" project, in which an unusual
mineralogical association of Euclasa- Aguamarina-Apatite has been reported.
We had the opportunity to discuss with project geologists and artisanal miners,
later they explained about the structural controls and some strategic exploration
tips.
• September 30:
During this day, we focused on performing field work in order to understand the
regional geology like lithology, structures and geomorphology by mapping
activities, the we visited a project located in Coscuez -Boyaca.

Since 2013 the SEG Student Chapter UNAL - Bogotá had been organizing the
Metallogenic Field Conference “ Luis Daniel Saenz" in which both, students and
professionals had the opportunity of visit and learn about different world class
deposits of different kinds. Since 2014, William X. Chávez and Juan Carlos Molano
have directed the Conference.
This year, we decided to visit projects, which we could learn about different
deposits as lead and zinc remplacement carbonates and lamprophyre
dikes. This field trip gave us the opportunity to make comparisons between
deposits which we have in our country and, identifying differences between
deposit models. In the end, we realized the importance of stratigraphy, structural
geology and historical geology to understand these deposits.
Professionals of Colombia, Perú and Nicaragua joined us, in the most diverse
edition of the conference so far.
Finally, we closed our field trip with a visit to Yellowstone Caldera in Yellowstone
National Park in the Western United States. This visit gave us the possibility to
understanding hydrothermal and geothermal activity. For more information
about this incredible field trip, go to the field trip report 2018.

Metals, Minerals, and Society
During the month of September, one student of the student chapter, Carlos José
Charry Celis presented the summary of his work. He was accepted to participate
in the SEG Conference 2018, which was held in Keystone. He has the opportunity
to attend a great variety of conferences about ore deposits, updates on the
deposits that have been discovered at present, the techniques and new
chemical analyze that had being done, and the deposits types that have
become increasingly important in modern times.
Of course, it was a great moment to continue making friendship with Latin-
American students.

FUTURE PLANS
We really have a lot of future plans¡ At this moment, we have
different topic to carry out.
We will continue with our academic conferences to increase our
knowledge about ore deposits and economic geology. Also, we
will continue doing our mineral fairs: we want to expand it and
reach more people who like minerals as much as us¡
And in 2019, we will make our 7th Metalogenic Field Conference
"Luis Daniel Sáenz" our most important field trip of the year.
