ESTIMATING WIND SPEEDWind speed may be estimated using the Beaufort Scale. The Beaufort Scale was named after an English admiral who died in 1857. It provides a useful guide to wind speed based on the effect of wind strength on different objects in the environment. The Beaufort Scale was developed and refined after careful observation, measurement and recordings over a long period of time. Draw a line to match the picture with the observation.

Speed (km/h) Description Observation 0 Calm Smoke rises vertically

1-5 Light wind Wind direction shown, by smoke

6-11 Light breeze Wind felt on face, leaves rustle

Leaves and twigs 12-19 Gentle breeze constantly move, flags begin to flutter Dust and paper blown 20-29 Moderate breeze about, small branches on trees move Small trees sway, small 30-39 Fresh breeze waves on lakes

Large branches on trees 40-50 Strong breeze move, difficult to use an umbrella

Whole trees sway, 51-61 Near gale-force difficult to walk against the wind

62-74 Gale Twigs broken off trees, objects blown around

75-87 Severe gale Chimney pots and roof tiles break

88-101 Storm Trees uprooted, buildings damaged

102-117 Violent storm Very rarely occurs, widespread damage

TEAM ROLES

As a team, you will very much be running this Quest. Your Dreamtime Quest Program Leaders and School Leaders will be there to ensure your safety, support and advise you where they feel it appropriate, and review your progress with you, so you are able to learn and develop your skills. People may assist you, however you will make all the day-to –day decisions to ensure the smooth running of your Quest.

You will each get a turn at being the Student Leader during the Dreamtime Quest as well as all the other roles within the team. As student leader it will be your job to identify what jobs need doing to ensure tasks are delegated amongst the team and get done. You may also chair the review sessions with the rest of the team during your time as the student leader, you will still have an active role to play in the team and responsibility for ensuring The Dreamtime Quest runs as smoothly as possible. Below is a list of some of the possible roles within the team. The way in which you co-ordinate these roles and work out a rotation for the quest is up to each individual team and should be discussed with the Student Leaders when they are appointed. Often this will be discussed during the planning stage on the first day. Please feel free to use the Schedule of Team Roles on page 13 of this booklet.

TEAM ROLES

Role (Team Role Description)

Student Leader Decision maker and delegating tasks to the rest of the team. (aka Elder)

Assistant Leader

Assists the main Student Leader in decision making and delegating tasks to the rest of the team.

Weather Observer

A key skill in Indigenous Life was observing the weather. Do this every 3 hours, everyone should have a go at this and log details in the journal.

Medical Officer

Keeping a record of any illness / injury in the medical journal, and ensuring the team are taking the necessary precautions due to environmental considera-tions, (i.e. sunscreen, insect repellent etc.)

Please note, however that The Lighthouse Keepers Quest Leader and School Leader has overall responsibility for First Aid and health and safety on the quest.

Food & Hygiene Officer(s)

Responsible for the organization and distribution of food, and food-time hygiene (i.e Hand Sanitiser)

Environmental Officer(s)

Ensuring rubbish sweeps are done of areas and that rub-bish is disposed of / re-cycled appropriately etc. Espe-cially around campsites and eating areas. It is important that this rubbish is collected as you can prevent it from contaminating the ocean, potentially harming baby fur seals, dolphins and other sea creatures

Journal Keeper Responsible for keeping the team journal up to date. Everyone in the team should be involved in the entries, and they can be as creative and artistic as you like.

Team Photographer

It is good to take team photos so you can put together camp highlights on return, to use for presentation purposes or just as a souvenir. Some teams may choose to take a video camera to record their experiences and show to friends, family and school.

There may be some other team roles that you can think of in addition ?

SCHEDULE OF TEAM ROLES

You will all be taking on different team roles this week. It is a good idea to plan your team roles in advance so that you can each prepare for when it is your turn. You will each get approximately 2 - 3 hours playing the role that you are allocated. Do not worry if you do not get a turn if time doesn’t allow, you will get a turn the next day.
