This year was slightly different with Balranald Central School only competing in the Open Girls Tennis event. Our team consisted of 4 enthusiastic Year 8 students, keen to help build a tennis dynasty at BCS for years to come. The team consisted of Macy ‘DOK’ (daughter of Kim) Lloyd, Lauren ‘DOM’ (daughter of Matt) Jess, Bonnie ‘DOL’ (daughter of Lisa) Jolliffe and Hannah ‘’ DON’ (daughter of Nathan) Morton. The girls, along with their new nicknames jumped in ‘Whitey’s’ Colorado and headed off to make history at Barham. A blustery day greeted the girls as they disembarked at the Barham tennis courts. We had scored a win with a round 1 bye but round 2 would be a different story. We were lucky in the end to face the mighty Deni High team who had just beaten the hometown favourites. Keep the ball in play and see what happens was the advice from the coach as ‘DOM’ and ‘DON’ stepped on court for their opening doubles game. I ducked to the car to get the camera and as I approached them 2 minutes later, ‘DOM’ and ‘DON’ were heading back to the sheds. 6 love was the reply when asked what they were doing. Apparently the force of the wind combined with the force of the opposition proved a much harder obstacle than was first thought. The only serve they saw coming was the one from the coach. At least they still had singles to play. On court 2, the combination of ‘DOK’ and ‘DOL’ were putting on a better show. Once again the standard of the opposition combined with the strength of the wind was making life difficult, but the girls were playing some good tennis and putting on a show. At the end of this set our girls had scrambled 2 games after taking nearly all the games to juice. 6 – 2 was a good first up effort with singles to follow. The singles was a different affair with the only similarity being the final result. Lauren ‘DOM’ Jess played an exciting brand of tennis with many juice games against her much more experienced opponent. The final score of 6 love against didn’t indicate the standard of this game, but ‘DOM’ was philosophical about the result with her comment “where are we going for lunch?” Hannah ‘DON’ Morton played an entertaining game of singles, full of fist pumps and “come on’s” before going down 6 games to 1. This girl sure has a bright future but possible not with a racquet in her hand. The singles game of Bonnie ‘DOL’ Jolliffe was one for the ages with the diminutive butcher’s daughter, taking it right up to the Deni maestro. The game was on a knife’s edge for a long time but unfortunately a score of 6 – 0 didn’t bring home the bacon. It did show the steel this young lady has. The final singles game had our Macy ‘DOK’ Lloyd facing off against the Deni number 3. Now ‘DOK’ had been warned on the trip over that she had to tone down her enthusiasm and leave the sledging for the cricketers. She soon had her opponent running scared with her fierce look and dominating presence and this is how it continued as ‘DOK’ went down 6 – 1. A red face and exasperated sigh was all that we got from Mace at the end. At the end of the match, even though the girls had been comprehensively beaten on the scoreboard, their presence had been a big win for the game. It was great experience for these girls and they are all looking forward to next year. Tennis at Barham

Every year at about this time, the Floris Conway Cup, (Open Girls Tennis), along with the Open Boys tennis and the Open Lawn Bowls triples are held as part of the Barham Sports Day.

The final score of 6 love against didn’t indicate the standard of this game, but ‘DOM’ was philosophical about the result with her comment “where are we going for lunch?”

Hannah ‘DON’ Morton played an entertaining game of singles, full of fist pumps and “come on’s” before going down 6 games to 1.

PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVES I would like to thank Bruce Scott for all of his contributions over the last four and half years as Assistant Principal at Balranald Central School. For those of you who don’t know, Bruce has accepted an Assistant Principal position at Hillsborough Public School in Newcastle to start next term. I have only ever found Mr Scott to be a professional colleague who is passionate about collaborative relationships with staff and targeting every student by exploring new approaches to engage and support their individual learning needs. He has lead and modelled exemplary skills in teaching to colleagues particularly in selecting and including ICT in the classroom. Mr Scott will be missed by students, staff and the broader parent community. On behalf of Balranald Central School, I wish Mr Scott and his family all the best in the future.

Congratulations to Khy Jess who has been selected in the Riverina AFL Team. Khy will now represent the Riverina in the NSW School Boys championships to be held in Parks next term. This is a fantastic sporting achievement for Khy and Balranald Central School is extremely proud.

It was a pleasure to host six of the eight Deniliquin Secondary Principals at Balranald Central School last Friday. The purpose of the gathering was to create support networks and have general discussions around current topics. Discussion were held on School Excellence, School Policies and HSC monitoring. Principals had a tour of our school and left being very impressed with our facilities and teaching and learning environment.

Great News for BCS community!!! Discussions between Balranald Central School and Maoneng Australia regarding a corporate tertiary scholarship program have significantly progressed. Qiao Han the Vice President of Maoneng Australia and leader of the Sunraysia Solar Farm project has committed $30,000 per year for ten years. This commitment will come into force when the project has reached financial close which is currently targeted towards the end of the year. The scholarships will come in the form of 2x $15000 or 3 x $10000 scholarships exclusively for BCS students who complete their HSC and enter into University. The broader eligibility/selection criteria is yet to be determined. This community partnership is an important part of the Balranald Central School’s stage 6 reforms and it also demonstrates Maoneng Australia’s commitment to growing Balranald’s future. This is a huge announcement for our school community and more details will be released as discussion progresses further.
