Please allow me to insert a poron of the email I received Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Since 2011 I have been faithfully aending quarterly meengs of the Human Services Transportaon Plan commiee. These meengs have been in places like Vienna, Ullin, Shawnee, Carbondale, Sparta, Mount Vernon, Belleville, and Waterloo to name a few. That was before I knew I could submit it electronically, so I did that also. Today I spoke with Mike Healy, Secon Chief for the Consolidated Vehicle Procurement Program at the Division of Public & Intermodal Transportaon at the Illinois Department of Transportaon. He told me that they had 164 Vehicles to award in our division this year. There were 100 applicants and 72 applicants were selected in the enre State of Illinois and Millstadt was one of them to receive (2) vehicles. We will use these vehicles to provide transportaon to Millstadt area seniors as well as Freeburg and Smithton. We are going to dispose of our current bus and hopefully will have enough funds to build a shed or overhang to keep them in. Please stay warm and healthy during this incredibly cold period of winter. 5th Annual Big Ole Bag & Jewelry Sale The fourth annual Big Old Bag and Jewelry Sale will have a special pre-sale wine and cheese party on Friday, April 24 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. For $5.00, payable at the door, enjoy some cheese, wine, and soft drinks and have the opportunity to purchase gently used purses, hats, jewelry and scarves at very special prices. On Saturday, April 25, the doors to the Community Center will open at 8:00 am all the remaining items will be for sale until 1:00 pm. Donations of all purses, jewelry, hats and scarves are accepted at the Community Center. All proceeds from the Friday and Saturday sales benefit the Millstadt Senior Center.

RECYCLING PROGRAM Recycling continues the first Saturday of every month at the Township Garage on East Harrison Street. Volunteers will remove the recyclables, glass, cans, paper, cardboard and number 1 and 2 plastics from your vehicle from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. This program is available for all residents of Millstadt Township and the Village.

Special Olympics Winter Games A group of local athletes competed in the Winter Game held by Special Olympics-Illinois at Chestnut Mountain in Galena. Colleen Costello, from Millstadt earned a gold medal in the 400 meter snow shoe event and a bronze medal in the 200 meter. The competition featured 400 athletes participating in alpine skiing, cross country skiing and snowshoeing over a scheduled three days of competition. Congratulations to Colleen!

DID YOU SIGN IN? Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.

MILLSTADT COMMUNITY CROSS WALK You are invited to participate in Millstadt’s ninth annual community Cross Walk, on Good Friday, April 3rd at 11:45 am. The purpose is to lift up the saving work that Jesus Christ performed on the cross for all who believe in Him, by bringing the Christians of Millstadt together to carry a wooden cross through our community. The walk will begin at 11:45 a.m. at the Senior Center and then go to Garden Place, then Zion Evangelical Church, Millstadt Baptist Church, St James Catholic Church, Creason Funeral Home and ending at the Millstadt Primary Center. The total distance is 1.9 Miles. At each location, one of the phrases that Jesus Christ spoke from the cross (His last 7 words) would be stated, with a brief explanation, thought and prayer.

Clothing Donations Remember your clothing items donated to the collection box at the IGA parking lot will add to the proceeds IGA collects and donates to the Senior Center. Proceeds from the clothing collection box at IGA along with funds from aluminum cans collected at the Community Center help maintain the Meals on Wheels program for Millstadt Township. With the help of your donations 20,000 meals were served to Seniors in Millstadt Township last year.
Honey Glazed Chicken Wings Remember when chicken wings were twenty-nine cents a pound and the last piece of chicken to be plucked from the platter? You will have to spend a little more for the wings in the following recipe. 1 ½ to 2 lbs. chicken wings 1/3 c. honey 1/3 c. soy sauce 1 tsp. salt 2 tbsp. salad oil ½ tsp. ginger 2 tbsp. chili sauce ½ tsp. garlic powder Place chicken in a marinade or baking pan. Mix remaining ingredients; pour on chicken. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or more, turning chicken over occasionally. Bake chicken 30 to 45 minutes in 375 degree oven. Reserve marinade and brush chicken occasionally while baking. The wings can be kept hot in a crock-pot after baking.

Millstadt Civic Club To Host Annual Spring Events The ladies of the Millstadt Civic Club invite you to attend two delicious events this March.
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, the club will host their annual Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner on Tuesday, March 17, at the Millstadt Community Center from 4-7pm. A corned beef plate served with cabbage, potatoes, carrots, and bread costs $10. A sandwich plate served with chips costs $5. Guests can dine in or carry out. Complimentary glasses of tea or lemonade are available for those dining at the Community Center.
A few days later, the club will host their annual Bunny Brunch on Saturday, March 21, at the Millstadt Primary Center from 10am-noon. The admission cost for children is $5. Guests are asked to consider donating a new children’s book for the village “Books for Babies” program.
In addition to crafts and face painting, new to this year’s brunch are a pancake breakfast, games, more prize opportunities, and an Easter Bunny dance party.
The Bunny Brunch is recommended for children 10 years and younger. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
All proceeds from these fundraisers go directly to the Millstadt Civic Club’s community projects and scholarship fund.

Women Stops Gator Attack with Small Pistol This is a story of self-control and marksmanship by a brave, cool-headed woman with a small pistol against a fierce predator. Here is her story: While out walking along the edge of a bayou just below Houma, Louisiana with my soon to be ex-husband discussing property settlement and other divorce issues, we were surprised by a huge 12 foot alligator suddenly emerging from the murky water and charging us with its large jaws wide open. She must have been protecting her nest because she was extremely aggressive. If I had not my little .25 caliber pistol with me, I would not be here today. Just one shot to my estranged husband’s knee cap was all it took. The gator got him easily and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace. It’s one of the best pistols in my collection! Plus …the amount I saved in lawyer’s fees was more than worth the purchase price of the gun.

Rite of Passage? By Judy Vollmer Jacobs
The early 1940’s started with quarantine as a baby-scarlet fever. Had “mommy” to myself. Then, the requisite childhood diseases – HAD to have a part of growing up. School missed! Scab! Scars! Ear aches! Horror tales! But once sick, never again. Part of being a kid. Because, if you had them you were OLD…you could go blind or be sterile or die or…something!!! So, we waited – watched – sneezed – coughed – cotton in the ears – blew noses (washable cotton handkerchiefs). And, yes! Through each primary grade, through the school went measles, mumps, and chicken pox. Usually, in winter. No sledding. No snowmen. Instead, dark rooms, glass thermometers, cool cloths, soothing lotion, sweetened drinks, chicken soup, clipped nails or mittens on your hands, coloring books, check boards, Old Maid. Hopefully, well enough to wear an Easter bonnet. Catching and surviving childhood diseases was a rite of passage. Some kids get more exotic things like croup, diphtheria, and/or whooping cough. Their passage had more trials. Finally, vaccines arrived on the scene-no more 3-weeks at home with Mom. A “stick” and you were vaccinated-immunity came with a peppermint from “Doc”. What you did not want was polio. Scary! Did not really know what “lungs” were; but, an IRON lung had to be worse. Once again, saved by a vaccine “stick” and later by a “swallow”. Smallpox, too, was simply scraping the skin, wear a shield, and vaccination immunity. One neighbor got rheumatic fever. Couldn’t play or have visitors for weeks. Then, during months of recuperation, he GOT to have a bed in his garage! Our Red Flyer wagon trains or gypsy caravans stopped at his “trading post” while traversing the neighbor’s yards. He guarded our maturing June-bug wine until it was ready and we all had a swig! Eventually, his trading post closed. Rite of passage (child to young child) change when science intervenes. Personally, sore throats, ear aches, spots, and scabs were NOT the “good ole days”. Vaccines are!!!!
What did your mother, family, friends use/do to cure illness in your family? Judy Vollmer Jacobs told us that to cut a cough, they would soak ½ teaspoon of sugar with Kerosine and swallow it. How can you find someone for a “bratty” kid to play with? Tie a pork chop bone around the kid’s waist and the dog will wrestle with him.

The Millstadt Ambulance held Open House on a snowy February 18, 2015. There were free refreshments and a chance to look up close at their recent acquisition. The new ambulance is a Type 1 Demers with a truck chassis with a box on it. The other two ambulances they have are Type 3 with van chassis with boxes on them.
Last year they averaged 10.5 calls a week for a total of 545 calls not counting standbys with the Fire Department. Calls are up slightly this year to 12.1 calls per week.
The cost of the new ambulance was $133,000.
The respond team includes all list and is headed up by Dave Koch as Operations Manager.

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.
Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. Bible Study At Senior Center An informal Bible study will be offered at the Millstadt Senior Center, on the 2nd and 4th Monday at 10:00 am. This is a non-denominational study and all are welcome, regardless of religious background, and there is no cost. The
leader is Cheryl Mueth, a retired teacher and Meals on Meals Volunteer.
