Rotary is a worldwide or-
ganization of more than
34,000 service clubs, with
over 1.2 million members.
The first Rotary Club was
founded in Chicago in 1905
by attorney Paul Harris
and business associates.
The Pittsburgh Club, spon-
sored by the Chicago Club,
was the 10th (1911).
The Rotary Club of Fox Chapel Area was
organized on October 20, 1970 and chartered
on December 21, 1971. The Oakmont Rotary
Club was its sponsor.
S e r v i c e
Rotary’s motto is “service above self.”
The Fox Chapel Area club focuses on service
to the local communities in the Fox Chapel
Area school district.
Each year it donates roughly $10,000 to com-
munity programs such as the Cooper-Siegel
Community Library, the Boyd Community
Center, All of Us Care (VOA), North Hills
Community Outreach, Aspinwall Meals on
Wheels, Camp Guyasuta (Boy Scouts), Bee-
chwood Farms (Audubon Society), St. Marga-
ret Foundation, Sharpsburg Family Worship
Center, St. Vincent de Paul food pantry and
to educational programs and scholarships for
students at the Fox Chapel Area High

Usually the Fox Chapel Area Club undertakes a
special project every year. In 2012-13, it raised
$6,100 for local students without computers, which
a District grant augmented. In 2010-11, it raised
$10,000 for the new community library. In 2007-8
it raised $10,000 for clean water drinking wells in
Haiti, which was matched by $10,000 from the
Rotary Foundation and the local District Founda-
tion. Earlier the Club had funded the construction
of one of the bunkhouses at Camp Guyasuta.

Rotary is most well known interna-
tionally for “Polio Plus,” the cam-
paign it launched in 1985 to eradi-
cate polio. Since then Rotary has
contributed over $1 billion, and by
January 2012 it had raised another $200 million
to match a Bill and Melinda Gates Fund challenge
of $350 million, to finish the job. (There are still
cases in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. No
cases have been reported since January 2011 in
India.) Rotary has also focused on literacy and
clean drinking water and on youth exchanges and
educational programs for university students to
build peace and good will.
F u n d i n g
Rotarians contribute much
of the money they donate to
these causes themselves.
Annual dues for the Fox
Chapel Area Club is $195
— $50 of which goes to the local District
(7300) and $66 to Rotary International for
their operations and a subscription to The
Rotarian magazine. Most of the rest is ap-
plied to the charities and scholarships the
Club supports.
Members are also encouraged to contribute
at least $100 every year to the Rotary Foun-
dation (and/or Polio Plus). The Rotary Foun-
dation is very highly rated, since all contri-
butions are applied to projects, with operat-
ing costs being covered by the interest before
the funds are dispersed (usually within 3
years of contribution). Contributions to the
Fund are tax deductible.
M e e t i n g
The Club meets most Wednesdays from noon
to 1:15 at the Pittsburgh Field Club. Mem-
bers take turns getting speakers — a respon-
sibility that comes up not quite once a year
(resulting in an outstanding series). In De-
cember the Club hosts spouses and the mad-
rigal singers from the Fox Chapel Area High
School for a holiday dinner. There is also a
long tradition of an annual picnic with spous-
es at Beechwood Farms.

A Board of Directors makes decisions for the
club, but quarterly “club assemblies” are held
to discuss matters with the general member-
ship. Board Members include the President
(chosen annually), President Elect, Immedi-
ate Past President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
There are also a small number of committees
for specific activities.
