Student Research Paper Conference Report 09/08/2014
Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad. 2
Introduction
Student research conferences serve as a platform for the undergraduate students to present their
research work in aerospace and related fields and a chance to contribute and compete at
international level. The conference provides an excellent opportunity to the students to interact
with the professionals from aerospace industry and educational sector, and network with other
aerospace students. Through their interaction in the conference, the researchers develop long
lasting technical links among themselves. Such a co-operation not only benefits the process of
research but also brings the engineers and scientists closer in terms of exchange of knowledge and
experience.
Institute of Space Technology (IST), Islamabad, organized the First Student Research Paper
Conference on 6th -7th August, 2014. The event was organized for the first time in Pakistan by
AIAA student branch at IST in which 55 research papers from the students of IST and external
universities were presented and evaluated by the judges. The best papers were awarded AIAA
memberships and cash awards by the student chapter.
Conference Proceedings
Inaugural Session
The Inaugural Ceremony was held at 10:00 hrs. on August 6th, 2014 in the IST auditorium. World
renowned scientist and professor, Dr. N. M. Butt was the chief guest at the occasion. Engr. Imran
Rahman was the chairman of the conference while Dr. Abid Ali Khan was the conference
secretary.
The ceremony commenced with the recitation
of the holy Quran. The secretary of the
conference Dr. Abid Ali Khan, Faculty chair
AIAA chapter and HOD Aeronautics &
Astronautics, IST welcomed the participants
and explained the proceedings. Dr. Mudassar
Farooq, Dean IST, delivered the keynote
address. He advised the students to think out of
the box and that their approach towards
engineering problems should be inquisitive and
research oriented. He said that the purpose of SRPC was to provide a platform to the students of
different universities to display their research work on the dynamic fields of Space Science and
Engineering, including Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, control systems, Space-craft
engineering and communication systems, Remote Sensing and Geographical information science,
Materials Science, and Space Sciences. He was hopeful that SRPC would promote

interdisciplinary understanding of aerospace &
engineering systems, their underlying science
and technology, and their importance and
applications.
The chief guest, Dr. N. M. Butt, in his inaugural
address, emphasized that the key to the
development for any nation is to provide
opportunities of state-of-the-art education to
the youth. He focused on the importance of
rapidly-growing modern field of Nano-
technology. He motivated the students by
giving the example of Dr. Abdus Salam’s
tremendous accomplishments. Many Pakistani
universities are now ranked in the top 300
universities of the world. Research activities
and publications of Pakistani authors have
increased exponentially. He quoted the Royal
Society of London calling the talented
Pakistani students to meet Noble Laureates for
inspiration. Moreover, he mentioned that the
Pakistani youth is very talented and it has
always come up with the innovatory ideas. The
chief guest was presented with the shield of the
conference by the Dean, IST.

Plenary Session
A plenary session was held after the inaugural ceremony in which three renowned speakers gave
their talks in their respective fields.
Dr. Sara Qaiser discussed the importance of
Nano materials and the ongoing research on
Nano materials in Pakistan. She gave an
overview of the scope on Nano materials in
future technologies and how these
materials are helpful for engineers and
scientists.
Dr. Muhammad Farooq started his address
from the very basics of microscopy and
took it further to the advanced techniques
being used in this field. Moreover he also
gave importance to the use of microscopy
for the further advancement of science and
technology, since this field is associated
with every aspect of science directly or
indirectly.
Dr. M. Bilal Malik discussed the
importance of higher studies for engineers.
He shared his experience of PhD students
with the audience, addressed their related
questions very satisfactorily. He also told
the audience about the trends in research of
PhD students throughout the world
highlighting the scope of research available
for Pakistani students around the world.

Poster Competition
Undergraduate students also presented their papers in the form of posters. The posters were judged
by the faculty members of Aeronautics & Astronautics and Electrical Engineering, IST. The judges
evaluated the posters and gave their views about this competition. Meanwhile they also gave useful
tips to the participating students about how to present the paper graphically and convey the
meaning of the papers in a single poster. The list of poster presentations is attached in Appendix
B.

Panel Discussion Panel discussion was headed by Dr. Abid Ali Khan, Faculty chair AIAA chapter, IST and Head
department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Institute of Space Technology. HODs of Electrical
Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Space Science, and Mechanical Engineering
department were also there along with the faculty members of all departments. This discussion
was very useful for the students as they could directly ask questions to the faculty members,
whether they are of academic nature or related to higher studies abroad. Faculty members shared
their experiences with different universities of the world and advised students to go for higher
studies and actively participate in the researches. Student feedback was also taken in this
discussion and students expressed their views and suggested that these kinds of conferences should
held frequently so that they know about the ongoing researches and they can share their knowledge
using these types of platforms.
Concluding Session Concluding ceremony of first student research paper conference was chaired by Dr. Mudassar
Farooq, Dean IST, Dr. Abid Ali Khan, Faculty chair AIAA chapter and HoD Department of
Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the chief guest Dr. Anjum Tauqeer. Dr. Abid Ali Khan
expressed his views about the successful event of its type in IST. He congratulated the organizing
team, judges, the faculty members and the audience for making this event memorable. He
concluded his address by sharing certain statistics of the conference like the participant students
and the number of papers presented.
Dr. Mudasser Farooq gave importance to the research process and advised students to think out of
the box and go for the innovatory solutions of engineering problems. He gave an overview of the
