NOTE from the SSETGreetings from the Student Section Enterprise Team (SSET). This year we are launching a periodic newsletter to keep student sections, student members, and student section advisors informed of ASME activities and events. Coming up in March and April 2017 will be three Engineering Festivals (E-Fests) that will take place at the following locations: LNM Institute of Information Technology (Asia Pacific – India), University of Nevada Las Vegas (Western United States), and Tennessee Tech University (Eastern United States). These are going to be great events combining the majority of ASME student competitions including the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, ASME Student Design Contest, ASME IAM3D Challenge, and ASME Old Guard Competitions. Additionally, each E-Fest will have numerous speakers and professional development activities to allow everyone to celebrate engineering during the 3-day events.

Contained within this newsletter are stories from various student sections and regions from around the world written by the Student Regional Chairs serving on the SSET. If you would like to share exciting news about your student section, please send an article and we will add it to a future newsletter.

We will be accepting applications/nominations for Student Regional Chairs (SRC) to serve for the upcoming 2017-2018 academic year (FY18). The SSET meets for a monthly teleconference and as a SRC, you serve as a student representative for your region in the continual improvement of the ASME student member experience. You get to collaborate with an international team of students and Student Regional Advisors dedicated to this purpose of developing and sharing best practices while cultivating your own leadership skills. SRC applications are due May 31, 2017. Thank you for all you do to promote ASME on your campus and we look forward to seeing you at the ASME E-Fests!

Student Leadership Training Conference

The Student Leadership Training Conference is an incredible experience for young members and student leaders to attend. Every year, selected students travel to this conference the week before IMECE to learn valuable soft skills like resource management, conflict resolution, and also share in the community of ASME. This year’s conference was in sunny Arizona, where over 50 students from 10 countries attended. Before and after each conference, students are given the opportunity to communicate with each other and other members of the ASME community and build their network. At this conference, many distinguished speakers: past attendees, ASME committee members, and even past presidents come to speak. This experience doesn’t just directly benefit attendee’s respective student sections or local members; SLTC gives students the ability to learn and apply these valuable skills in a way that can be adapted to real world scenarios. From team building and ice breakers, to planning events and leading an organization, SLTC is a fantastic resource for driven individuals looking to learn, and grow their network. For more information, please visit ASME.org - or email [email protected]. See you next year at SLTC!

NEWS FROM EUROPE

Koç University ASME Student Chapter has been an outstanding student chapter since its foundation in 2013

with a broad portfolio of events, competitions and workshops. Under the roof ASME, we organize academic and technical seminars with faculty members, alumni and professionals in order to build a network of high achievers. In addition to field trips, we arrange technical competitions to spread interest in field. In Fall 2016, we completed an exceptionally special project called ‘DSGN101’, that we would like to share the news with fellow colleagues and professors.

DSGN101 – Introduction to 3D Modelling and 3D Printing is the first peer-to-peer course in Turkey authorized by Koç University. In this course, undergraduate students coming from all majors including engineering and social sciences are introduced to basic concepts of 3D thinking, CAD programming via

Siemens NX and hands-on practice of 3D printing. In the 21st century, inventions are more and more concentrated around multidisciplinary fields and we would like to contribute to this innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem by offering our expertise in cutting-edge technologies. Throughout the course, lectures and problem solving sections are organized and led by 6 experienced mechanical engineering undergraduate students in order to enhance peer-to-peer learning and teaching. Participating students with no prior experience, are taught CAD design and modelling and subsequently encouraged to 3D-print their designs ranging from model toys to senior design projects in order to build a bridge between digital world and physical manufacturing. Last semester, 28 students participated in this course, of which 12 students were awarded with certificates due to their distinctive success. This first-of-its-kind course, which was taught by mechanical engineering undergraduates and inspected by our faculty advisor Prof.İsmail Lazoğlu, received a high overall score of feedback (4.9 out of 5) on the topics ranging from level of instructor’s concern for students to amount of knowledge gained from the course. Next semester, we are planning to expand our course to a broader network of undergraduate and high school students to attract interest in mechanical engineering and to facilitate adoption of technologies such as 3D-Printing.

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Student Section located in Region 2 of North

America started the year off with an impromptu design challenge of building a bridge to hold the most pennies, to allow students to meet new people and practice their problem solving skills.

Another activity they participated in was their third year of cleaning up their adopted highway of West Nike Road in Rapid City, South Dakota. Some of the students can be seen in the picture with their collection of trash.

The section also had graduates and students talk about their past experiences with companies like Caterpillar Inc., Adams Thermal Systems, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Vestas Wind Turbines.

A local Boy scout troop came to visit the school so the ASME students taught them how mechanical engineers build robots. The Boyscouts can be seen using robotic arms to pick up objects and put them in a cup.

ASME IAM3D was a big milestone in the journey of Team Innovator labs. ASME provided us with a grand stage to present our hard work in front of a panel of esteemed judges. The IAM3D challenge pushed us to a whole new level especially when we look at the level of the competition and the technical competence of the numerous teams that participated.

We first found out about the competition a day before the initial submission deadline. Although we had the 3D printed models ready with us, it would still have taken us at least 2 days to compile our business case and entry. We resigned ourselves to competing at IAM3D 2017 instead, looking at IAM3D 2016 as an opportunity wasted. Little did we know that someone, someone was rooting for us and the very next day we discovered that the deadline had been extended. With a newfound energy, we got to work and split the submission into individual jobs to maximize our productivity. Burning the midnight oil, we managed to create a competitive entry just in the nick of time. Our efforts paid off when we were selected for the finals to be held in Charlotte in the month of August. Heading into the finals, we weren’t going to leave anything to chance. Armed with a box full of prototypes, an air tight presentation and all the determination in the world we headed to Charlotte.

The finals were held in concert with the IAM3D and IDETC/CIE conferences and we were given a wonderful opportunity to explore both conferences. A technical workshop on “Design for Additive Manufacturing” was a key highlight of the conference experience. The day of the finals was fraught with nervousness and excitement till it was our turn to present our project. While the presentation itself was quick, the wait for the results lasted forever. In the moment of truth, we won the award for ‘Best Re-engineered/Collaboratively Designed Product’ for our work on the 3D Printing of Heart Valve Prototypes. The day round to a close with the help of an exciting dinner at the nearby ‘NASCAR Hall of Fame’ and a sense of accomplishment washed over us. To be recognized by ASME for your innovation is really irreplaceable and we will forever cherish that feeling. ASME IAM3D was a huge victory for us and will be a great stepping stone to a fantastic live in engineering. We’d like to thank ASME for giving us this amazing opportunity.

ASME’s Engineering Festivals (E-Fests) are three-day, two-night regional events for engineering students. These events include

design competitions, career development workshops, access to thought leaders and innovators in various engineering

fields, and networking opportunities—all to inspire the next generation of change-makers. Be part

of an immersive, electric experience that will connect and inspire a generation of

change-makers
