Student Success November/December 2013 Bison Power Walk By DJ Everton-Lovell and Claira Oberrender On November 15, first year students in Dr. Concetta Pucci’s three GSR 101 classes hosted Bison Power Walk/Run and Expo on the the Berg Track and Hotchkiss Field. The purpose of the event was to fundraise for Deaf Child Worldwide, a charity that provides support to deaf children around the world. Participants were required to pay $3/$5 to register for the event, and donations were also accepted. Participants competed in six di erent activities, and the winner who completed the race received a gift card. The Bison Power Walk/Run also provided an expo of booths oering information on health education. By hosting the Bison Power Walk/Run, Dr. Pucci’s three GSR 101 classes learned how to use campus resources, such as the Campus Activities, to plan the event. Each class had its own area of focus: one was responsible for event promotion and the expo; the other one was responsible for logistics and event planning; and the third class was responsible for the registry and donations. The classes also used the event to show what they had learned about health and fitness, since Dr. Pucci’s topic for her GSR 101 classes was health and fitness. The event was successful. Twelve participants attended the event, and around seventy-four people had donated to the cause. In the end, the classes had collected $ 448! A Message From Student Success’ Rudolph By Alim Chandani"

“Every experience, no matter how bad it seems, holds within it a blessing of some kind. The goal is to find it.” –Buddha"

You made it through your first semester here at Gallaudet University! With your ups and downs that you had throughout the semester, you will always remember the feeling of what it was like being at a university as a first-year student. Some years ahead, you will look back and remember those jitters and the excitement you had during your first semester in college."

It is time to reflect your highlights of the semester and be proud of what you have accomplished in the past few months here. Soon enough, you will be rejoicing with your friends and/or family members back home to celebrate the holidays! During this time of the year, we all reflect on what the year 2013 had made us."

One key point that we must remember is to be grateful for what we have. I am very grateful to have such a great group of committed elves (peer mentors) who have served their best this semester! I look forward to creating many more memories with them along with you all next semester!"

The Student Success Center wants to wish you Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!"

So long, 2013!"

!!!!!!!!!Football: an Interview with Jacy Pedersen By Alyssa Gleason"

Gallaudet University Football has been making headlines all over the United States. Some of our star athletes have had their fifteen minutes of fame on CBS Evening News and ESPN. But what about our freshmen? How has the seemingly overnight success of the Bison affected them? Here is what Jacy Pederson, one of the freshman football players, has to say about his experience playing in one of the best seasons the Gallaudet football program has ever seen. "

Pedersen, a middle linebacker and a recent graduate from California School for the Deaf, feels lucky to be on the team at the right time. “It’s an outstanding experience,” he says. “We will have some tough games in the playoffs, but it’s all up to the players if they really want it.” Over the course of four years at Gallaudet University, Jacy Pederson hopes to contribute to the team with off-season trainings working towards becoming a playmaker for the team. "

Fun fact: Jacy Pedersen looks up to Senior Running Back Ryan Bonheyo and Junior Linebacker Gregg McConville Jr.

“My first year experience at Gallaudet so far has been very overwhelming. As a hear ing s tudent apar t o f the deaf community has been interesting. I have been able to learn new things that I didn't already know and I have been able to adapt to how the deaf community works.”"
