Curriculum

Part 1: Purpose The purpose of the Master of Arts in International Business Communication study programme is to provide, on the basis of a completed BA study programme, students with a number of general and specific competencies. General business language and communication competencies The purpose of the study programme is to enable students to • Perform specialist functions that require knowledge of and skills in identifying, analysing and

solving linguistic and communication problems in a Danish and international context. Comprehensive knowledge of the chosen foreign language, its structure and function as well as in-depth knowledge of linguistic theories and methodologies are key in this context.

• Perform tasks, on the basis of the above knowledge and skills, within dissemination and communication in Danish and the chosen foreign language in private and/or public-sector enterprises, organisations and institutions.

• Carry out research within the subject areas of the study programme. General academic competencies The study programme seeks to further develop the general academic competencies acquired by students in their BA studies. Consequently, the study programme seeks, through the teaching and working methods used, to strengthen the students’ skills in: • Working in an independent, disciplined, well-structured and targeted manner, both alone and in

groups • Assuming personal responsibility for the quality and completion of a work assignment • Formulating a problem and developing a solution model • Discussing and assessing various theories in relation to a given problem • Acquiring and structuring large volumes of knowledge • Working methodologically with complex and comprehensive material • Applying a system of ideas to complex material, thereby creating new and interesting

knowledge • Carrying out and participating in scientific/academic activities Specific business language and communication competencies and qualifications

Three profiles are offered: the Translation/Interpreting profile, the International Market Communication and PR profile and the European Studies profile. These profiles provide students with the opportunity to specialise within various competency areas. In addition, students can compose their own individual profile comprising courses from two or three of the above profiles. Depending on the choice of profile, students acquire the following specific business language and communication competencies: • Translation/Interpreting This profile qualifies students to perform specialist translation and communication tasks as well as interpreting tasks at the highest level within Danish and international companies and organisations. To achieve these objectives, students must acquire the following qualifications: (a) Knowledge of: • Basic theories and methodologies relating to specialist terminology and lexicography • Theories and methodologies relating to translation, language revision, text production and

interpreting • Key text genres within the technical, financial and legal specialist disciplines • Legal and financial conditions in Denmark and in the country of the chosen language (b) Skills in: • Translation, revision and other methods of processing specialist texts • Gathering and processing relevant specialist knowledge • Preparation of terminological and lexicographical material • Interpreting in e.g. courtroom, police and business contexts • International Market Communication and PR This profile qualifies students to perform international information and PR functions and to carry out market communication for private and public-sector enterprises and organisations. To achieve these objectives, students must acquire the following qualifications: (a) Knowledge of: • International PR and market communication • Communication theories and models for information processes

• The media landscape in the relevant foreign country • Cultural barriers in the individual countries (b) Skills in: • Choosing relevant communication strategies in a variety of situations for a variety of senders

and to a variety of recipients • Assessing and planning a campaign • Producing PR material in the relevant foreign language • European Studies This profile qualifies students to perform communication and advisory tasks in Danish and international enterprises, with special focus on relations to the EU. To achieve these objectives, students must acquire the following qualifications: (a) Knowledge of: • Social science methodologies • The framework for the activities of key players on the European scene • Communication with EU institutions • Political communication and lobbying in the EU • Networking and fundraising • Negotiation strategies and negotiation styles (b) Skills in: • Analysing prototypical texts • Preparing texts within a defined framework • Project planning and management • Negotiation in the relevant foreign language • Interdisciplinary collaboration

Part 2: Focus areas Sect. 3. The MA in International Business Communication (cand.ling.merc.) is offered within four

languages: English, French, Spanish and German.

(2) Within each of the four languages, three profiles are offered: A Translation/Interpreting profile, an International Market Communication and PR

profile and a European Studies profile. It is possible to obtain an MA in International Business Communication without following a specific profile.

(3) Holders of an MA degree with the Translation/Interpreting profile are entitled to become certified as state-authorised translators and interpreters.

Part 3: Admission Sect. 4. Admission to the MA study programme requires a BA in Languages and International

Business Communication in the relevant language pursuant to Ministerial Order no. 338 of 6 May 2004 issued by the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. (2) The Study Committee may, in special cases, admit students who do not meet the

requirements for admission stated in (1), if it is determined that they have acquired equivalent academic skills in other ways.

Part 4: Structure Sect. 5. The programme is a two-year study programme. Sect. 6. The programme comprises a total of ten exams plus a thesis.

(2) Nine of the study programme’s exams are divided into basic courses, profile courses and electives.

(3) The basic courses comprise two exams. (4) Four exams are defined for the Translation/Interpreting profile and the European

Studies profile. Five exams are defined for the International Market Communication and PR profile. If the four exams within the Translation/Interpreting profile are passed, the diploma will carry the title Master of Arts in International Business Communication with a specialisation in Translation and Interpreting. If the five exams within the International Market Communication and PR profile are passed, the diploma will carry the title Master of Arts in International Business Communication with a specialisation in International Market Communication and PR. If the four exams are passed within the European Studies profile, the exam will carry the title Master of Arts in International Business Communication with a specialisation in European Studies. MA students who do not take the exams listed above for one specific profile will be granted the title Master of Arts in International Business Communication.

(5) The electives comprise three exams, of which at least one must be within the chosen foreign language. However, for students who have chosen the International Market

Communication and PR profile, the electives only comprise two exams. These exams do not have to be within a foreign language.

(6) One exam in oral proficiency must be taken in conjunction with an exam chosen by the student which includes an oral element. The following exams may be taken for oral proficiency:

TT profile: B2, P3 or VF-S IMK profile: B2, P3, P4 EUS profile: B2, P4 or VF-S

Part 5: Exam types Sect. 7. The degree programme includes six exam types and a thesis. Sect. 8. A set exam is an exam where the examinee must answer one or more questions prepared

by the examiner (lecturer). A free-subject exam is an exam where the examinee has prepared one or several questions which must, however, be approved by the examiner (lecturer).

Sect. 9. All oral exams are individual. Written exams may be either individual exams or group exams. The student is always

entitled to submit an individual, written paper. In both individual and group exams, the student’s performance must be subject to an individual assessment. In written group exams, the paper must clearly state the contribution of each student. (1) A group can consist of max. four students; however theses may only be written in

groups of max. three students. (2) It must be clear which sections/parts are written by the individual members so as to

allow for an individual assessment of student performance. (3) It may be recommended in the Student’s Handbook of the individual language

departments that certain written exams are taken as group exams. Sect. 10. Types of exams:

(1) M = Oral set-subject exam with external examiner The exam duration is 30 minutes, incl. assessment. Preparation time may be given.

Assessment according to the 7-point grading scale. (2) H = Written take-home exam

Max. length: 30,000 characters (approx. 13.5 A4 pages of 2,200 characters excl. spaces, table of contents, bibliography and appendices, but incl. notes). The Student’s Handbooks of the individual language departments may stipulate whether the assignment should be written in Danish or in the foreign language being studied. There may also be different rules as to whether the assignment is a free-subject or set-subject assignment, whether the examiner is internal or external and the amount

of time available to complete the assignment. Assessment according to the 7-point grading scale.

(3) R = Report A report is a written take-home assignment followed by an oral exam based on the

written report. External examiner. The written assignment may be max. 22,000 characters (approx. 10 A4 pages of 2,200 characters, excl. spaces, table of contents, bibliography and appendices, but incl. notes). The Student’s Handbooks of the individual language departments may stipulate whether the report should be written in Danish and/or in the foreign language being studied. Furthermore, there may be different rules as to whether the assignment is a free-subject or set-subject assignment, the amount of time available to prepare the written report, when the oral exam should be held after submission of the written report and the duration of the oral exam. No preparation time is given. Assessment according to the 7-point grading scale.

(4) T = 12-hour assignment 12-hour set-subject written assignment with external examiner. Max. length: 11,000 characters (approx. 5 A4 pages of 2,200 characters excl. spaces). The Student’s Handbooks of the individual language departments may stipulate whether the assignment should be written in Danish and/or in the foreign language being studied. Assessment according to the 7-point grading scale.

(5) I = Written assignment to be assessed by the internship supervisor Max. length: 11,000 characters (approx. 5 A4 pages of 2,200 characters excl. spaces,

table of contents, bibliography and appendices, but incl. notes). The internship report must be written in the foreign language being studied. The internship which forms the basis for Exam I must be completed after at least one of the exams within the International Market Communication and PR profile has been passed. Assessed as Pass/Fail. See also the section on internships under electives (see Part 9).

(6) L = Ongoing assessment with portfolio to be assessed by the supervisor Max. length: 18,000 characters (approx. 8 A4 pages of 2,200 characters excl. spaces,

table of contents, bibliography and appendices, but incl. notes) excl. the prepared communication material. Assessed as Pass/Fail.

(7) S = Thesis The thesis is a free-subject independent report of 50-80 A4 pages of 2,200

characters, excl. spaces, table of contents, bibliography, abstract and appendices, but incl. notes. The thesis can be written in Danish or the relevant foreign language as per agreement with the thesis supervisor. It must include an abstract of max. 2 A4 pages of 2,200 characters, excl. spaces, written in the relevant foreign language. The

abstract is included in the overall assessment, which also emphasises the written presentation, regardless of the language in which the thesis is written. The thesis must be defended in an oral exam. Assessed by an external examiner according to the 7-point grading scale.

Sect. 11. The elective exams VF-1 and VF-2 are assessed by the examiner (lecturer). The elective exam VF-S is assessed by the lecturer and an internal examiner. The elective exams are assessed according to the 7-point grading scale. If a profile exam is taken as a VF exam, the exam type follows this exam, and the exam is assessed by an external examiner.

Part 7: Teaching methods Sect.13. The teaching methods include lectures, classes, seminars, individual and group

consultations.

Part 8: Language skills requirements The assessment of all written assignments, whether written in Danish or in the relevant foreign language, includes an assessment of language proficiency and power of exposition (the student’s ability to present material in a concise, balanced and well-structured manner).

Part 9: Description of exams EXAM TITLE: GENERAL LINGUISTIC STUDIES AND METHODOLOGY Exam code: B1 ECTS: 10 Exam type T: 12-hour assignment (See also Part 5: Exam types) Description of exam The exam is based on distributed text material one or more questions. The exam may also include a translation into the foreign language of a text of max. 2,200 characters. With the exception of any translation, the exam paper may be written in Danish or the foreign language depending on the rules set out in the Student’s Handbook for each individual language. Scope The exam paper, excluding any translation, may contain max. 11,000 characters. The number of characters (excl. spaces) must be stated on the exam paper. Duration 12 hours Assessment criteria In the assessment of the extent to which the student meets the objectives of the course, particular emphasis is placed on the following elements: • Understanding key issues within the subject area

• Analytical and methodological skills, including ability to argue in favour of specific analytical choices

• Ability to use relevant terminology • Ability to structure a written paper • Ability to communicate in language that is lexically, grammatically and stylistically correct If the exam includes a translation from Danish into the foreign language, emphasis is also placed on the following element: • Ability to make lexical, grammatical and stylistic choices that ensure the appropriate and

suitable transfer of the Danish text. The grade is determined based on an overall assessment of the student’s performance. Description of grades 12 Excellent An excellent performance displaying a high level of command of all aspects of the relevant material, with no or only a few unimportant deficiencies. Detailed description: The performance demonstrates a confident ability to conduct a linguistic analysis supported by methodological arguments. The analysis is communicated in a language that is lexically, grammatically and stylistically correct. For exam papers that also include a translation from Danish into the foreign language: The translation is a very accurate transfer of the Danish text.

02 Adequate For a performance meeting only the minimum requirements for acceptance. Detailed description: The performance demonstrates basic knowledge of the subject, but some uncertainty in the use of the methodology in the analysis. The presentation of the analysis is linguistically uncertain. For exam papers that also include a translation from Danish into the foreign language: The translation demonstrates a basic understanding of the Danish context and is without significant misunderstandings, but is characterised by linguistic uncertainty. Grading One grade is awarded according to the Danish 7-point grading scale. Where a translation represents a separate part of the exam, the assessments of the translation and of the theoretical part are each weighted 50%. In the theoretical part, the examinee’s language proficiency will also be assessed. If the theoretical part is written in the foreign language, the assessment of the language proficiency has a weighting of 1/3 of the grade for this part. Exam title: SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE AND METHODOLOGY Exam code: B2 ECTS: 10 Exam type M: Oral exam (See also Part 5: Exam types) Description of exam Five weekdays before the exam is to take place, an exam question within the overall specialist areas is distributed. This exam question forms the basis of the exam. The exam question may, for instance, ask for an account of preparations for or work on a written language production assignment, considerations of the principles of text abstracts and structuring of text material, an account of an information search that includes criticism of sources, knowledge acquisition and evidence searches, an account of methods for linguistic and/or communication-theoretical analysis and an account of the cultural and societal context of the topic.

The exam is in the form of a presentation of the exam paper followed by an elaborating interview between the student and the examiner (lecturer). AV equipment may be used. The presentation and the interview take place in the foreign language. Parts of the exam may take place in Danish depending on the nature of the exam question.

Duration 30 minutes, including assessment. No preparation time. Assessment criteria In the assessment of the extent to which the student meets the objectives of the course, particular emphasis is placed on the following elements: • Ability to apply the theoretical knowledge of specialist language methodologies and relevant

analysis models in answering the exam question(s)

• Ability to choose and use appropriate strategies with a view to producing specialist texts • Communication and argumentation skills • Ability to communicate correctly in the foreign language

The assessment focuses on whether the language is fluent and idiomatic as well as correct in terms of grammar, semantics and style.

The grade is determined based on an overall assessment of the student’s performance. Description of grades 12 Excellent An excellent performance displaying a high level of command of all aspects of the relevant material, with no or only a few minor weaknesses. Detailed description: The performance demonstrates an ability to confidently incorporate relevant theory in solving the assignment with regard to analysis as well as methodological choices. The language is fluent and idiomatic with a high degree of grammatical, semantic and stylistic correctness. The presentation demonstrates an ability to present and discuss the exam question and the exam paper in a focused, well-structured and reflective manner. 02 Adequate For a performance meeting only the minimum requirements for acceptance. Detailed description: The performance demonstrates basic theoretical knowledge, but with a degree of uncertainty in applying that knowledge to the analysis and methodology. The language is characterised by uncertainty with regard to grammar, semantics, style and idiom. The student displays an ability to present the exam question and the exam paper, but the performance is characterised by a lack of focus and insufficient reflection. Examiner(s) External Grading A single grade is awarded for content and presentation according to the Danish 7-point grading scale. The language proficiency of the examinee has a weighting of 1/3 of the overall grade. It is also possible to award a grade according to the 7-point grading scale for oral proficiency if the student requests to have this evaluated in conjunction with the exam.

Exam title: TECHNICAL TRANSLATION Exam code: P1 ECTS: 10 Exam type T: 12-hour assignment (See also Part 5: Exam types)

Description of exam The exam is based on distributed text material and consists of translation to and from the foreign language. The exam includes comments on the translation and/or the information search. The exam text(s) are selected from key text genres such as product descriptions, operating instructions, manuals, (popular) science articles etc. The Student’s Handbooks of the individual language departments state whether the comments should be written in Danish or the foreign language. Scope The text that is to be translated contains max. 5,000 characters. The exam paper, including the translation, may contain max. 11,000 characters. The number of characters (excl. spaces) must be stated on the exam paper. Duration 12 hours Assessment criteria In the assessment of the extent to which the student meets the objectives of the course, particular emphasis is placed on the following elements: • Ability to communicate specialist content in the translation between the two languages • Ability to utilise specialist terminology and the conventions that are typical of the genre in

question • Ability to communicate in writing in the foreign language and in Danish.

The assessment focuses on whether the language is correct in terms of grammar, semantics, style and idiom.

• Ability to account for translation methods, terminology, specialist language and/or technical issues

• Ability to conduct specialist and linguistic information searches

Description of grades 12 Excellent An excellent performance displaying a high level of command of all aspects of the relevant material, with no or only a few unimportant deficiencies. Detailed description: The performance demonstrates an ability to confidently communicate specialist content in the translation between the two languages, with confident use of specialist terminology and genre conventions. The language is idiomatic with a high level of grammatical correctness. The comments part shows an ability to account for translation methods, specialist language and/or technical issues in a focused, well-structured and reflective manner, as well as an ability to conduct independent and methodological information searches. 02 Adequate For a performance meeting only the minimum requirements for acceptance. Detailed description: The performance demonstrates an ability to communicate specialist content in the translation between the two languages without significant misunderstandings. The language is characterised by an uncertain command of specialist terminology, genre conventions and grammar. The comments part displays knowledge of the fundamental academic concepts and methodologies used in translation, but is characterised by insufficient academic and methodological insight and a lack of focus. Examiner(s) External Grading Two grades are awarded according to the 7-point grading scale, one for translation into the foreign language with comments and one for translation from the foreign language with comments. The overall grade is based on an average of the two grades. The requirement of an average of at least 02 cannot be met by rounding up. The assessment places particular emphasis on whether the translation is technically adequate with terminologically and idiomatically correct specialist language and using the grammatical and

stylistic characteristics that are common to the subject area and genre. Each of the two grades is based on an overall assessment of the translation into and from the foreign language and the associated comments, with the main emphasis being on the quality of the translations. Exam title: LEGAL TRANSLATION Exam code: P2 (applies to French and Spanish) ECTS: 10 Exam type T: 12-hour assignment (See also Part 5: Exam types)

Description of exam The exam is based on distributed text material within key text genres such as pleadings, contracts, scientific articles etc. and consists of translation to and from the foreign language. The exam includes comments on the translation and/or the information search. The Student’s Handbooks of the individual language departments state whether the comments should be written in Danish or the foreign language. Scope The text that is to be translated contains max. 5,000 characters. The exam paper, including the translation, may contain max. 11,000 characters. The number of characters (excl. spaces) must be stated on the exam paper. The internship report must consist of a reasoned presentation of an issue from the internship period which is supported by relevant academic literature. The report must be written in the foreign language being studied. Scope The written report may contain max. 11,000 characters. Duration During and in continuation of an internship of at least eight weeks’ duration with either a Danish or foreign company/organisation, the student must prepare a written report. Description of exam The student writes an exam paper on an issue which must be approved by the lecturer. The student is relatively free to choose a topic, as long as it is interdisciplinary, relevant to the course and meets the methodological quality criteria. The assignment may include empirical material. In connection with the written take-home exam, the student must document knowledge on new European ideas by relating the chosen issue to the overriding theme of the course. The overriding theme is set by the lecturer before the course starts. Examples of themes include: ‘The European enterprise of the future, ‘EU 2010’, ‘Biotechnology and European consumers’, ‘Migration in Europe – past and present’. The student must display an ability to compare sources from various disciplines in a creative, critical and focused manner, for instance by incorporating new insights from various fields such as sociology, the natural sciences and ethics. In this way, it should be possible to suggest how companies might market genetically modified products in future, while bearing in mind the scepticism that sociologists and consumer research have pinpointed towards such products. The sub-analyses should also reflect a methodological consciousness of the viability of theoretical statements and empirical methods. There are no serious misunderstandings, but the language is characterised by a degree of idiomatic or grammatical uncertainty. There may be minor inconsistencies in relation to the applicable formal requirements. Examiner(s) No examiner Grading One grade is awarded according to the Danish 7-point grading scale. If the exam paper is written in the foreign language, language proficiency represents 1/3 of the grade. Alternatives to the above take-home exam As an alternative to the above, the student may choose to take an exam within the profile course group or participate in an internship in connection with an elective exam. The student may also choose to take an exam within the MA programme in corporate communication or MACC under Summer University, within other study programmes at the University of Aarhus (including the MSc at ASB) or at another institution in Denmark or abroad. • Profile exam as an elective exam Any of the P1-P4 exams that have not been taken as profile exams may be taken as VF-1 or VF-2. In such cases, the exam type and examiners follow the chosen exam. Please note Titles of profile exams may only be used as titles of elective exams when following the P-exam type.

• Internship report as an elective exam Under electives, the student may choose to participate in an internship of at least eight weeks’ duration with either a foreign or a Danish company/organisation. During and in continuation of an internship, the student must write report. The report must consist of a reasoned presentation of an issue from the internship period which is supported by relevant academic literature. The internship report may be max. 11,000 characters. The number of characters (excl. spaces) must be stated on the exam paper. For assessment criteria and descriptions of exams, please see the description of Exam I in the IMK profile. Students who take Exam I under the IMK profile, may not participate in an internship as an elective. The internship which forms the basis for the exam must be taken after at least one TT, IMK or EUS profile exam has been passed. One grade is awarded according to the Danish 7-point grading scale. • Exams for the MA programme in corporate communication or MACC Credit is automatically awarded for elective exams taken as part of the two MA study

Description of grades 12 Excellent An excellent performance displaying a high level of command of all aspects of the relevant material, with no or only a few minor weaknesses. Detailed description: The language is fluent and idiomatic with a high level of grammatical correctness. The examinee communicates precisely and demonstrates command of a large vocabulary. The performance suits the communication situation in style and observes the phonological rules of the standard language. 02 Adequate For a performance meeting only the minimum requirements for acceptance. Detailed description: The language is coherent, but the performance is characterised by breaks where the examinee searchers for the right words. There are errors in morphology, syntax and style, but they do not affect the sense of what is being said. Exam code: S ECTS: 30 Exam type: Independent, free-subject thesis with oral defence

Objectives The objective of the thesis is to qualify the student to independently: • Carry out a major academic study • Study an issue of relevance to the study programme • Use academic theories and methodologies Description of exam The thesis is an independent free-subject paper. The thesis may be written in Danish or the relevant foreign language as per agreement with the thesis supervisor. The thesis must include an abstract of max. 4,400 characters (no spaces). The abstract must be written in the student’s foreign language. The thesis may be written in groups of max. three students, provided that the contributions of individual students are clearly identifiable. The oral defence is individual. Thesis topics The thesis must be related to the student’s foreign language, social and cultural aspects in the broadest sense or communication in the country/countries where the foreign language is spoken. The focus may be on the foreign language or aspects in the country where the foreign language is spoken. The thesis may also focus on studies of a contrastive nature that also involve Danish or other languages in relation to Denmark or other countries. Further, the thesis may comprise a study of theoretical issues of a more general nature within language and communication.

The amount of empirical material used must be reasonable in relation to the nature of the topic and must stem from/incorporate the student’s foreign language or aspects of the country where the foreign language is spoken.

Supervision Students must register for supervision with a supervisor by submitting a registration form. The form is available from the department secretariat.

For theses of type 1) a supervisor is chosen from the relevant teaching group. For theses of type 2) a supervisor is chosen from the teaching group or from the department in general. In both cases, a principle supervisor and additional supervisors may be assigned. Scope If the thesis is written by one student, it must have a length of 50-80 A4 pages of 2,200 characters, excl. the table of contents, bibliography, abstract and appendices, but incl. notes. The number of characters must be stated on the thesis. The thesis must include an abstract of max. 4,400 characters. For groups of two students, the length is 75-120 standard pages, and for groups of three students, the length is 100-150 standard pages. The number of characters (excl. spaces) must be stated on the thesis. Duration The defence is in the form of an oral exam of 45 minutes’ duration, including assessment. The oral exam takes place no later than eight weeks after submission of the thesis. with the main emphasis on the thesis. The assessment includes an assessment of the abstract accompanying the thesis.

In the event that a thesis is not passed, the same thesis may form the basis of a revised thesis which is then submitted and assessed according to standard practice.

Part 10: General exam provisions Exams The exams are taken individually and in such order as the student may wish. The exams are taken in the two exam terms (December-January and May-June) with the following exceptions: Special deadlines apply in connection with Exam I and L under the International Market Communication and PR profile. Deviations may be made to the exam terms in connection with free-subject take-home papers, however these are always subject to a decision being made by the Study Committee to this effect. An exam being graded in accordance with the Danish 7-point grading scale is passed when a grade of 02 or higher is awarded. With other types of assessment, the grade ‘Pass’ is awarded when an exam is passed. Re-exam If a student fails to obtain the grade 02 (or ‘Pass’) on an exam, the student may register for the same exam in a later exam period. Special rule for re-exams in oral proficiency: The exam in oral proficiency must be taken, according to the student’s wishes, in conjunction with the oral part of the B2, P3, P4 or VF-S exams. Further, any re-exam must also be taken in conjunction with one of these exams, if possible. If this is not possible, the Study Committee will decide in specific cases how the exam must be taken.

Syllabus in connection with re-exams The student has the right to re-sit an exam with the same exam syllabus if the re-exam takes place during the two exam periods immediately following the first exam attempt. Note that adjustments to and updating of the syllabus are not considered a change of the syllabus. The student is responsible for contacting the lecturer to provide information on any adjustments.

Re-exams in connection with the final exam period Students who only need to pass one exam, which according to the Student’s Handbook is placed in the final exam period, may re-sit the exam in the same exam period or in immediate continuation thereof. Individual exams/group exams All oral exams are individual. Written exams may be either individual exams or group exams. The student is always entitled to submit an individual, written paper. In both individual and group exams, the student’s performance must be subject to an individual assessment. In written group exams, the paper must clearly state the contribution of each student. No. of exam attempts Students can sit individual exams, including submitting a take-home written paper or thesis, a maximum of three times. The Study Committee for Master Programmes at t he Faculty of Language and Business Communication may in special cases grant a fourth exam attempt. Exam registration For all exams, registration is required by a specific date. Exam deregistration The deadline for deregistering from an exam is no later than two weeks before the exam in question. Personal deregistration takes place via Study Administration, where a special form must be completed. Make sure to bring your student ID. A written deregistration must contain the following information: student name, student CPR number and the exam(s) for which you are deregistering. If the student is registered for an exam and has not deregistered from the exam on time, the registration always counts as one exam attempt. The exam is available online. See how to do this on Study Information (www.asb.dk/studinfo) under Internet Exam. The exam can also be picked up at Study Administration (B4). In both cases, the exam is available from 8.15.

• Exam material Examinees must bring their own writing materials and any aids if the exam takes place at Aarhus School of Business, University of Aarhus. All aids are permitted.

• During the exam The responsible lecturer will be present or can be contacted by telephone during the first hour, or it will be possible to send for him or her in order to settle any queries concerning the exam question.

• Independence The 12-hour assignment is an individual exam that must be prepared independently by the student, and the student’s performance is assessed independently.

• Submitting the exam The exam can be submitted online. See how to do this on Study Information (www.asb.dk/studinfo) under Internet Exam.

The exam may be submitted online or at Study Administration (B4) between 8.15 and 14.00, and at the Information desk across from the main entrance between 14.00 and 20.15. The exam must be submitted in three copies. In both cases, the exam must be submitted no later than 20.15. Violation of exam rules If an examinee fails to comply with the exam rules, their exam paper can be rejected. In such cases, the rector may decide to expel the examinee from all exams in the current exam period. Sickness etc. In a student is prevented from taking or completing an exam or take-home exam paper on account of sickness etc., the Study Committee for Master Programmes at the Faculty of Language and Business Communication may, upon application, grant permission for late deregistration. If this causes a delay in the completion of the student’s studies, the Study Committee may grant permission for the student to re-sit the exam or, alternatively, may extend the deadline for submission of the exam paper. If a make-up exam is held, other students are allowed to participate provided that they have been granted permission for late deregistration subject to the above rule. The application must be accompanied by documentation in the form of a medical certificate covering the day or period in question, such certificate having been issued following personal contact with the doctor on the day on which the paper should have been submitted or on which day the exam was due to take place.

Credit transfer The Study Committee may grant the transfer of credits for study elements completed at another Danish or foreign institution of higher education. Such study elements are recognised as having been ‘Pass’ unless a grade has been awarded according to the Danish 7-point grading scale at the institution where the study element was completed. Exam certificate The Aarhus School of Business issues a degree certificate stating the exams passed and the grades awarded. Students who have taken the P1-P4 exams within the Translation/Interpreting profile will be issued with a diploma stating the title Master of Arts in International Business Communication in <Foreign language> with a specialisation in Translation and Interpreting. Students who have taken the P1, P3, P4, P6 and P5 or P7 exams within the International Market Communication and PR profile will be issued with a diploma with the title Master of Arts in International Business Communication in <Foreign language> with a specialisation in International Market Communication and PR. Students who have taken the P1, P3, P4 and P6 exams within the European Studies profile will be issued a diploma with the title Master of Arts in International Business Communication in <Foreign language> with a specialisation in European Studies. Students who have completed an individual profile with the study programme will be issued with a diploma with the title Master of Arts in International Business Communication in <Foreign language>. Students who do not complete the study programme are entitled to documentation of any exams passed. The documentation contains information about the nature of the exams in question and the grades achieved. Exam results The results of the written exams are posted online on CampusNet. Information on exam results will not be given over the telephone. Complaints Complaints relating to exam results must be submitted on a special form, which is available from the Student Counselling Service. Requests for exemption must be submitted to the Danish Ministry of Education via Aarhus School of Business and must be accompanied by the school’s comments.

Part 11: Commencement and interim provisions This curriculum enters into force and applies to students commencing studies in 2007. The Study Committee decides when the very last exams will be held according to old curricula.
