Diocese of Orlando St. Teresa Catholic School

Office of Schools Dear Parents: Over the years, the Diocese of Orlando and the Office of Schools have taken steps to ensure the safety of

your children. We continually review the measures we have in place to protect your children, and we often times ask for your support in implementing new measures and procedures designed to make our school a safe haven for your children.

To this end, we hope you will share the following with your children to help us ensure that wrongful

conduct does not occur in our schools. The intent of this letter is not to alarm you, but rather to help all of us understand the limits of proper conduct we expect in our schools. While we hope never to have these problems in our schools, we want it clearly understood that the Diocese does not condone or authorize its employees, volunteers, coaches, or students to engage in any of the following activities:

Threatening or causing personal harm or injury Threatening or causing damage to school or Diocesan property Providing medical advice Conducting physical examinations of or providing shots to students (other than school-

sponsored or sanctioned exams for scoliosis, vision, hearing, athletic fitness, diabetic treatments, or other medical treatments, all of which require written permission from a parent or guardian)

Administering drugs, including any over-the-counter medication, in the absence of express written permission from a parent or guardian per Diocesan policy

Providing massages or other physical therapy Taking blood samples or performing any other medical procedure Examining the genitalia of any student, for any reason Touching an individual inappropriately Smoking, or encouraging smoking, on school property Asking a student to undress or observing a student while he or she is changing clothes at school

or a sporting event, other than necessary supervision in a locker or approved changing area Denigrating or abusing any child, volunteer, or employee.

We also ask you, as parents, to help us identify these and any other inappropriate activities that take

place in our schools. Please report them immediately to the Principal or the Office of Schools. Similarly, if your child observes or experiences these or similar activities, he or she should feel comfortable telling you, the Principal, or the Office of Schools. Our experience and that of experts, particularly in the area of school violence, is that tell-tale signs (e.g., severe mood changes, emotional outburst or irrational conduct, fascination with guns or incidents of violence, indirect and direct threats) usually exist before the actual violent act occurs. Early intervention, therefore, is the key to avoiding a tragic situation. We cannot possibly identify all the improper conduct that might occur, but we ask you as parents to use your common sense and report anything that you believe is inappropriate. Your cooperation in enforcing these guidelines is greatly appreciated.

Working together, we can continue to provide your children a caring, loving environment, and the best

Catholic education. Please call me if you have any questions or concerns about this letter. Sincerely yours in Christ, Mrs. Jacqueline Zackel Principal

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of St. Teresa Catholic School is to provide a quality education that challenges and empowers students to develop their full potential. Our program is based on Gospel values and Catholic traditions and is implemented in a Christ-centered community that stresses excellence for all students.

PHILOSOPHY AND PURPOSE

The purpose of St. Teresa School is to provide, within a community of living faith and service, a Christian education for the children in North Brevard and the surrounding areas. Our teaching is based on love of God and neighbor, the uniqueness of persons, and respect for life; on the acquisition of basic skills, knowledge, and understanding; on the integration of religious truth and values with the rest of life; on the example and concern of the faculty; and through liturgical and para-liturgical celebrations together. To this end we commit ourselves to the following objectives:

OBJECTIVES We will...

Make the Gospel message the center and enlivening force of all that we do and teach.

Offer a program of religious formation that incorporates instruction in the truths and traditions of the Catholic faith, applies these truths in daily life, provides opportunities for prayer/worship, and prepares for the celebration of the Eucharist and other Sacraments.

Foster qualities that are essential to life-long learning: curiosity, self-confidence, persistence, self-discipline, critical-thinking skills, creative approaches to problem solving, and the courage to make moral and just choices.

Prepare students to meet the challenges of living in a technological and global society, and develop skills to responsibly access, interpret, organize, and communicate information from a variety of multimedia sources.

ACADEMIC POLICIES

Religion Curriculum When students enroll in a Catholic school, they automatically commit themselves to participate in the school's religion program. Although Catholic schools do not compel students to profess any religious ideology, it is expected that all students, regardless of their beliefs, will participate fully in the religious education program at the school. Students will attend all religion classes and worship services. All students are expected to conduct themselves respectfully and reverently during prayer, worship, and religion class. Proximate preparation for the celebration of the sacraments is a joint endeavor with students from the school and Religious Education program. They also share a retreat day together.

Curriculum An extensive curriculum is offered at all grade levels. As well as the core curriculum, students have the opportunity for a sequential program of learning in Physical Education, the Fine Arts, and Foreign Language. Subject areas include the following: Religion Reading/Language Arts Mathematics Pre-Algebra Algebra I/Honors Science & Science Research Social Studies Spanish Art Physical Education (P.E.) & Health Music Technology Library/Media Family Life Journalism (Grade 8)

Homework Homework (written assignments, reading, studying) is part of the total educational program. It is an extension of school activities and is intended to supplement class work. Parents are encouraged to supervise and assist the student indirectly, by providing materials, etc. The student should do the actual assignment. The time required to complete homework assignments will vary with individual students; however, it is recommended that a specific time be designated for homework/study activities. Students should be expected to spend time reading as well as completing written assignments each day. Students are expected to keep a record of all assignments in their Agenda and it is their responsibility to do so.

Homework Requests When a student is absent someone will do their best to write homework assignments for the absent student and place it in the student's desk. Upon returning to school it is the responsibility of the student to confirm the missed work with each teacher. Alternatively, the student may call a friend for assignments. For students absent two (2) days or less, please wait until he/she returns to school to request work. Parents who request books and homework should pick these up in the school office at the end of the school day. Requests must be made by 9:00 A.M. on the third day.

Late Work Credit for late homework is up to the teacher's discretion. Report Cards Report cards are emailed each trimester for students in

PreK-3, VPK—Grade 8. Parents are required to

schedule a mid-trimester conference as designated on

the school calendar with the child's homeroom teacher

to review the child(ren)’s progress.

Grading/Assessments Grades PreK-3—Grade 2

These grades receive a skills based report card for each trimester.

Student consistently demonstrates this behavior 2. Student sometimes demonstrates this behavior 3. Student seldom demonstrates this behavior Accommodations noted: Accommodations are noted on the report card.

Standardized Testing in the Diocese of Orlando

All schools in the Diocese of Orlando are required to administer standardized testing as an integral part of the total instructional program. This testing, however, is not “high-stakes” – the results are not used to determine teacher efficacy, nor are they used solely to determine a child’s promotion or retention. Test results/scores are simply one measure of the total composite of a child’s individual academic progress; thus, the information is used to assist teachers in meeting the specific and targeted learning expectations for a child’s appropriate developmental level. This information is critical in helping our teachers provide the best educational opportunities for our students. Continued on Page 5

Page 5: Student/Parent Handbook - St Teresa Catholic School · sponsored or sanctioned exams for scoliosis, vision, hearing, athletic fitness, diabetic treatments, or other medical treatments,

5

Promotion/Retention Students are regularly promoted at the end of the year upon successful completion of their coursework. When there is evidence that a student is not performing at the required level, parents will be asked to attend one or more conferences to discuss the situation, and procedures will be established to remediate the situation. If performance continues below grade level and a student fails to pass a subject, a recommendation for retention may be made.

Withdrawal/Transfer Whenever a student is to be withdrawn from the school the principal should be informed. All accounts with the school office must be settled before a transfer is complete and transcripts are forwarded to the next school. Delinquent accounts will delay the transfer process. Students who seek re-admission are advised that this will only be undertaken after consultation and at the discretion of the school administration.

Graduation Graduation from St. Teresa School is an honor granted to

students on successful completion of the Eighth Grade. All

accounts must also be paid in full by April 30th.

LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER Grades K-4 have an assigned library class weekly. Thus students are given the opportunity to develop library/media skills and check out books, which are to be returned the following week. Failure to return a borrowed book will result in loss of borrowing privileges until the book is returned or replaced. All books are inventoried in December and May. At this time students held responsible for missing books will be charged with the cost of the book or its replacement. If a student persists in holding a book or not replacing it, his/her report card will be withheld.

Please read the Acceptable Use Policy for the Diocese that has been posted to the Portal before signing this agreement. Read it carefully and discuss it with your student. The Diocese of Orlando, Office of Schools, knows that the Internet and other emerging technologies allows students an immense opportunity to learn and grow globally. The Office of Schools’ goal in providing the privilege to staff and students is to promote educational excellence in schools by facilitating resource sharing, innovation, and communication. The use of the Internet or other emerging technologies will be guided by the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).

THE SCHOOL DAY Arrival at School

7:35 A.M. - West end gate opens and safety patrol begins.

7:40 A.M. - 1st bell rings. Students may enter their classrooms.

7:53 A.M. - 2nd bell rings for start of the day.

After the 2nd bell, parents must sign students in through the office. Once morning announcements have begun students will wait outside the school office door until the announcements are complete.

All students are expected to be dropped off at the designated area.

Standardized Testing in the Diocese of Orlando Continued

Given the number of benefits derived from the standardized testing, the Diocese of Orlando does not allow a parent or a student the choice of “opt-out” of testing. Students who are absent for any reason, including medical absences, during the school’s designated testing window will be rescheduled for testing upon his/her return to school at the discretion of the school’s administration. Students will not be exempted from taking standardized tests. Accommodations or modifications will be offered as required to meet the qualified child’s learning needs. This means accommodations or modifications are allowed only when specifically indicated through testing via a professional evaluation completed as part of the IDEA Child Find process by the public school District, or through a private psychological-educational evaluation approved by the Office of Catholic Schools. In addition, Catholic schools in the Diocese of Orlando do not write 504 Student Disability plans. Accommodations or modifications are offered at the sole discretion of the school staff and must be based on an evaluation of the documentation provided and other factors deemed relevant by the school staff.

Honor Roll/Good Citizenship Students in Grades 5-8 who achieve an "80" or higher in each academic area, determined by levels of Learner Behavioral skills are placed on the Honor Roll each trimester. Students who are placed on the Honor Roll for two consecutive trimesters and through midterm third trimester are acknowledged at the Honors Assembly at the end of the trimesters. See page 9 for Good Citizenship requirements.

Special Needs/Referral Procedures Students who are considered by teachers and or parents to have special needs that warrant evaluation may apply for services through a private agency or request services from Brevard County Public Schools. Please follow these procedures for evaluation:

Discuss concerns with the classroom teacher (Grades

Pre-K through 4) or the homeroom teacher (Grades 5-8).

The teacher will review and discuss relevant material

and present request for referral to the resource teacher.

The resource teacher and the classroom teacher will

assist the parent in completing the necessary documentation with the appropriate agency.

Following the evaluation, any staffing that is

scheduled, the classroom teacher, resource teacher, or designee will be present.

The result of any evaluation should be shared with

relevant school personnel and administration so that the best decisions may be made for the child's welfare.

This decision about placement will be made in consultation with both parents and professionals. Parents may choose to place the child in a special program, opt for accommodations that are possible in school, or a combination of both. Accommodations regarding seating, learning style, and form of assessment are possible in so far as they do not infringe on the quality of the total program. Students who need additional reading, language, and/or math may be pulled for small group instruction.

11:15 A.M. - PreK-3 & VPK

2:50 P.M. - No student check-out allowed.

3:01 P.M. - The bell rings for students return to homeroom for dismissal.

3:10 P.M. - Announcements

Wednesday Dismissal

1:35 P.M. - No student check-out allowed.

1:44 P.M. - Students return to homeroom for dismissal.

1:55 P.M. - Announcements and dismissal.

Please note that children left after dismissal will be sent to the Extended Care Program and the parent/guardian may be charged $10.00 per child per occurrence for one (1) hour only. After the third occurrence, a letter from the principal will be sent home.

Lunch Program Students may order lunch for each day or for certain days every two weeks on Thursday morning by 9:00 a.m.; alternatively, they may bring a lunch from home. A full monthly menu is posted online. Lunch money should be sent to the child's classroom with the student, not to the school office, to avoid confusion. Although one check can be sent to purchase lunches for all the students in one family, each student in the family should turn in a lunch/milk order to his/her homeroom

teacher. Milk, chocolate milk, apple juice, or orange juice is also available for those who wish to purchase it. For lunches brought from home please include the necessary items for your child including spoons, forks, napkins, etc. Sodas and Peanut Butter are not permitted during school hours.

PARENTS ARE ASKED NOT TO BRING OR HAVE SPECIAL LUNCHES DELIVERED TO THE SCHOOL.

Short School Days - Professional Development Staff development is a necessary and vital part of the life of the teacher and enables him/her to keep current with developments in the field of education. In order to meet this goal and in compliance with Diocesan Policies, certain days and times are designated for this purpose. Early dismissal occurs every Wednesday at 2:00 P.M.

Traffic Pattern - Arrival/Dismissal

No cell phone usage during arrival and

dismissal.

Maximum speed in the parking lot is 10 miles

per hour at all times.

Drive slowly and carefully.

All students must be dropped off and picked up

in established car line under teacher supervision

and safety patrol assistance.

Attendance The daily on-time attendance at school is vital for the educational well-being of the child, unless a serious condition, such as illness, makes it impossible for him/her to attend. Whenever possible, doctor and dental appointments should be made outside school hours.

Tardiness After 7:53 A.M. a student is tardy and parents must and parents must bring the student into the office to be signed in. Late arrival does no excuse a student from his/her responsibility for class work missed or homework. Parents are expected to make every effort to have children at school on time. If a child is tardy more than four (4) days in any trimester, parents may be required to attend a conference with the teacher to examine the situation and formulate a plan to prevent the recurrence of such a situation.

Absences Due To Illness Parents are required to report a child's absence to the school by 9:00 A.M. The school office will attempt to reach the parent when a child is absent and a parent has not called. This procedure is undertaken to ensure the safe arrival of every child. However, the responsibility has to remain with the parent to contact the school because of the difficulty of reaching some parents.

A doctor’s note should be provided if a child misses more than three (3) days in a row. Six (6) days absent per school trimester (12 weeks) or a total of eighteen (18) days absent (excused or unexcused) may warrant repetition of the grade.

Keeping children out of school for such reasons as family excursions or vacations does NOT constitute a valid reason for absence. Such attitudes on the part of parents send a message that school is not important. Teachers will not provide homework assignments in advance since school policy states that family vacations should take place during designated time off during the school year i.e. Christmas vacation, Easter vacation, and summer vacation.

It is the student's responsibility, not the teacher's, to seek out assignments and make up any of the work that has been missed during an absence.

3:15 P.M. - Dismissal

Traffic Pattern - Arrival/Dismissal Continued

Procedures for arrival and dismissal with

necessary maps will be issued separately to

each family. Parents are required to follow

these directions closely.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

Family Back to School Night

Family Back to School Night events are held annually

and are announced in the church bulletin. All are invited

to attend these and other school-sponsored events, i.e.

special programs, drama/choir presentations, art and

science fairs.

School Community/Parish Interaction

St. Teresa School is an integral part of the parish

community. The school community supports and builds

on these reciprocal relations. School faculty, staff, and

administration clearly acknowledge the sponsorship of

the parish family, and in turn witness to and encourage

the support and allegiance of students and their parents

to the parish. Parents and students are encouraged to

support parish activities and be involved in various

ministries i.e. Altar Servers, Extraordinary Ministers of

the Eucharist, Readers, Ushers, etc. Parents and friends

are welcome to participate in any school programs, and

their contribution is valuable to the school. First Friday

with Friends, Faculty, and Father are meetings to

provide opportunities to volunteer and give input to

school programs. The school community is regularly

invited to participate in community programs and

allowed use of facilities. The school community

sanctions use of school buildings for certain organized

activities. A letter detailing use, a schedule of dates and

times, as well as a copy of insurance, must be furnished

to the administration.

School Board

The board is established under the authority of the pastor

of St. Teresa Parish. It is an advisory board whose main

purpose is to be consultative to the school

administration. Members complete an application and

are appointed to this board. Members may have

children enrolled in the school. Others will be

representative of the community at large. Members will

serve for at least three (3) years. Parents wishing to

have topics addressed by the board may do so by

contacting any member of the board, who will then

submit it to the president and/or the school

administration for placement on the agenda.

Parent Service Requirement/Volunteers

As noted on the school registration form, volunteer

service and fundraising are a necessary part of school

life. These requirements help defray the increasing costs

of education and enable us to maintain relatively low

tuition rates while providing many additional services.

The volunteer service of parents is also an eloquent

message to their children about the importance of their

school and the value of generous service. There are

many areas where volunteers provide incalculable

service to the children and the school. All volunteers are

required to be fingerprinted through the Diocese of

Orlando every five (5) years. Each family is required

to complete a designated minimum number of service

hours. Parents who do not complete the required

number of hours will be paying Category II tuition for

the following year.

P.A.L.S—Parents Always Lending Support is an

excellent way of fulfilling “Share Your Spirit” points.

This group comprised of parents, sponsors special

events during the school year to promote community

within our school family.

Fundraising

Fundraising is a necessary part of school life, and

parents and students are expected to support these

efforts. Two major events are scheduled annually, one

of these is the St. Teresa School Fair and the second is

usually held in the spring. Your signature on the

registration form endorses your intent to support these

fundraisers for Category I. Other solicitation and

fundraising by other agencies is not encouraged and

needs the express permission of the principal.

Portal

Parents are the first educators and part of their

responsibility is to regularly monitor student progress

through the Portal. These reports show the level of

student work and may indicate the need for a parent to

get more involved and/or to consult with the teacher.

Individual teachers will post to the Portal according to

the needs of each individual class.

Parental Rights and Release of Children

Divorced parents are asked to furnish the school with a

copy of the custody section of the divorce decree. The

school recognizes the custodial rights of both parents

and will provide access to the Portal for academic

records and school-related information regarding the

child, unless there is a court order to the contrary.

Regular reports and information will be sent only to the

parent who provides the primary residence. Children

will be released to either parent, unless there is a court

order to the contrary and a copy has been issued to the

school. Students will regularly be released to the

parents, guardians, and other authorized by the parents.

A copy of all signatures should be on file in the school

office. However, once a child is dismissed, the school

cannot be responsible for his/her departure from the

parking lot.

8

COMMUNICATION/PORTAL/ PARENT CONFERENCES

The school informs parents about activities at school and the progress of individual students through class grade reports via the Parent Portal, as well as cumulative reports each trimester, unless a paper copy is requested in writing by the parent/guardian. Parent/Teacher Scheduled Conferences. These

conferences are scheduled so that each parent has the

opportunity to meet with the child's teacher. They are

considered important opportunities for promoting a better

understanding of the child and enabling both the teacher

and the parent to work together in the best interest of the

student. They are mandatory at the first mid-trimester

progress report time and optional at the end of the first and

second reporting periods. Parents are required to attend the

first conference. Only one conference per child can be

scheduled, so parents/guardians are asked to coordinate a

time mutually acceptable to all. Apart from these

procedures, it is acceptable that a parent may have a

question about his/her child. In this instance it is

recommended that a parent talk first to the individual

teacher involved. A parent who would like to schedule a

conference with a teacher should do so through the school

office, where the staff will arrange a time. Conferences

with teachers will not be held between 7:45 A.M. - 3:00

P.M. Conferences will be scheduled at the convenience of

all parties. Conferences with the principal may also be

scheduled through the school office. Parents are requested

NOT to call teacher/staff at home or approach a teacher

during or after school hours without an appointment.

Invitations/Group Arrangements Invitations to student birthday parties may not be distributed at school. No other invitations/letters may be distributed at school. No gifts/flowers will be delivered to the classroom for birthdays or special occasions.

Change of Address/Telephone Numbers It is essential that parents notify the school immediately of any change in address, e-mail address, and telephone numbers. Each family must also supply an emergency number to the school. Unlisted numbers must also be given, which will be held in confidence as indicated on your registration form. Each year a student directory with class lists (including home phone numbers and address) will be published. If you wish your information to be omitted, please place your request in writing to the school office by August 15th.

USE OF SCHOOL TELEPHONE

The school office phone is for office use only. Students may only use it in an emergency and with the permission of his/her teacher and office staff. Each student must have a telephone pass to use the school office phone. Such things as forgotten homework/materials or permission for afterschool activities do not constitute an emergency. All arrangements for carpools and transportation should be

clear before the child leaves for school. A written note or email should be sent to the homeroom teacher if changes are made. Parents are asked to discuss alternative procedures with the children if the regular procedures for transportation have to be canceled. Please see Cell Phone Policy for more details.

Visitors to School All visitors, including parents and volunteers, must check/

sign in through the school office and wear the designated

name tag. Parents who are involved in classroom activities/

parties may NOT bring children not enrolled at St. Teresa

School in the classroom (Diocesan Regulations). All

messages should be left in the office for delivery to the

child. In the interest of the safety of all students, please do

not bring or deliver messages to the classroom.

HEALTH

Sick Children and Contagious Conditions

If a child becomes seriously ill or injured, parents will be

notified immediately, and/or emergency procedures will be

followed. Sick children cannot be kept at school, and

parents will be asked to take them home, especially when

the condition may be contagious. Please do not send

children to school who have vomited, had a fever or

diarrhea prior to arrival, as this is disruptive to the learning

environment and exposes others to illness.

Occasionally a child may become infested with head lice.

Parents are asked to check their children regularly, and

keep the child at home with head lice until there are no

more nits. Periodic head lice checks are also done in

school.

Administration of Medication

A form must be filled out for each medication. The

medication itself must be in its original container, with the

name of the child, the name of the medication, and amount

and time to be dispensed. This rule pertains to ALL

medication including over-the-counter medication (Tylenol,

aspirin, cough drops, etc.) and short/long term medication.

Please send appropriate dispenser for medication if

required. Students are not allowed to keep any medication

on their person. All medication must be turned into the

office and will be dispensed to them by an adult.

CONDUCT

Our School Covenant I am proud to be a St. Teresa Knight and promise to always choose what is right, to be kind, considerate, respectful and true and ask myself "What would Jesus do?"

I promise never to use words that hurt others or make them uncomfortable.

I promise to respect everyone whether I like them or not.

I promise to stand against those who choose to hurt others.

I promise to use peaceful means to solve problems.

Page 9: Student/Parent Handbook - St Teresa Catholic School · sponsored or sanctioned exams for scoliosis, vision, hearing, athletic fitness, diabetic treatments, or other medical treatments,

9

This covenant sums up the behavior expected from a student and the standards to which each one is accountable. Students at St. Teresa School are expected to conduct themselves in a manner indicative of young Christians. Courtesy is the mark of the educated person, and a respectful attitude between all members of the school community is encouraged. Respect for each individual fosters a spirit of mutual respect in which orderly behavior flourishes and is the foundation of all discipline. School discipline is intended to complement discipline at home and is not a substitute for it. It is impossible to enumerate all the possible infractions that could be classified as minor or major violations. The circumstances of any violation and its frequency may also influence its category.

Good Citizenship Good Citizenship will be determined using the report card, Learner Behaviors Skills Assessment of Responsibility, Participation, Assignment Completion and Interpersonal skills.

Minor Violations Violations of class rules (talking, out of seat, etc.), neglect of homework, not wearing appropriate uniform, not having required materials for class, failure to return signed papers, chewing gum in any part of school, etc. will result in a conduct referral if behavior continues.

Major Violations Gross lack of respect for others, extreme teasing, kicking, insubordination, conduct that endangers others such as physical aggression, stealing, continuing disrespect for school rules and property, hitting, and biting are considered major offenses. PHYSICAL HARM BY ONE STUDENT TO ANOTHER IS A SERIOUS OFFENSE AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Any student who verbally or in writing harms another is liable for severe punishment. Possession and/or circulation of materials that are immoral and/or in contradiction to the school philosophy, bringing in or partaking in any chemical substance (alcohol, drugs, tobacco), violation of any federal, state, or local law intentional damage to any school property i.e. books, desks, grounds, building, etc. Any behavior in or outside the school that is detrimental to the school will not be tolerated.

The possession or use of firearms, other weapons, or explosive devices on school premises is not permitted on school property by faculty, staff, students, parents, and/or anyone visiting our campus. The possession of a concealed firearm or weapon, at school-sponsored events or on the property of the school, including the buildings, parking areas, and other premises, is strictly prohibited.

Cheating Cheating is considered a serious offense. Children who talk during a test or copy answers from another source or another student including homework are considered to be cheating. Anyone found participating in or promoting this activity could receive a "0" (zero) for the assignment or test. Students involved will also be issued a conduct referral. Using the words/ideas of another, from a print or technology source, as one's own, without acknowledging the author is plagiarism and illegal and could result in a "0" (zero) grade on that assignment.

Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that will not be tolerated by St. Teresa School. Examples of sexual harassment include, but shall not be limited to:

unwelcomed sexual advances

requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct

the display of sexually suggestive objects or pictures

sexual innuendo, jokes, or suggestive comments

offensive gestures or offensive whistling

inappropriate touching. All infractions should be reported immediately to the administration or a faculty member. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. These may include verbal warnings, counseling, suspension, and expulsion.

Bullying Bullying may include behaviors that range from individual isolated attempts by a person/persons to victimize another to a pattern of behaviors repeated over time, which are meant to intimidate or belittle another person. This school does not condone such behavior.

We encourage students who find themselves involved in such a situation to confront the bully or ask assistance in confronting him/her. The student should tell their parent or another trusted adult immediately. The adult should inform the school administration immediately so that steps may be taken to help the child. Student Report Forms (Bully Form) can be picked up in the school office or from a classroom teacher. The completed form can be dropped off in the school office bully box or given to Mrs. Aldana or Mrs. Zackel. It is generally accepted that those who engage in bullying do so in a hidden/undercover manner and play on another's fears of continued teasing/bullying. Therefore the best recourse for the person being teased is to openly challenge the bully in front of others. Hopefully both students will see for themselves that such behavior is destructive and stop it. Please note that this school will not tolerate any type of bullying, harassment, or demeaning behavior, and when it is established that this is occurring, appropriate steps to eliminate this will be taken.

Disciplinary Procedures Minor discipline problems will be dealt with by a responsible professional in a timely, effective manner. The punishment will be determined by the nature of the offense, the frequency of occurrence, and the response of the student. A student will receive a warning about the unacceptable conduct. This will be followed by a more serious warning, such as the child's name being written on the board. Successive violations will result in a conduct referral and/or detention. If a student receives more than three (3) referrals or detentions in any trimester, parents will be required to attend a conference. A detention is a more serious consequence than getting a conduct referral. Conduct on the report card influences a student's standing regarding Honor Roll. Students should be aware that if a detention is given the following occurs:

The parent will be notified of the detention.

Student serves detention on the scheduled date. Major violations are liable for immediate suspension and/or expulsion. Students who miss tests while on suspension may make up work upon their return. Expulsion from a Catholic school is always a serious matter and necessitates an immediate conference with parents. Sometimes, however, it is the only recourse the school has in order to ensure the safety and protection of all students. It is imperative that parents uphold the

disciplinary decisions of the school. It should be remembered that these measures are administered for the good of all students. Please note: Student desks, personal proper ty, and backpacks may be searched as deemed necessary by the administration. The principal and pastor are the final recourse in all disciplinary procedures.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

Students are not permitted to bring personal items to school and can do so only with special permission; such as Ipads, CD players, headphones, camera, any recording devices, etc. are not permitted. As a parent, you determine if your child’s schedule after school requires that he/she have a cell phone for safety reasons, but the following rules must be followed (signed attached cell phone policy). Cell phones are to be off at all times, never taken out of the student’s backpack and under no circumstance should a student receive or make phone calls, receive or send texts/pictures while on school grounds. This policy covers all times that the student is on campus: regular school day, extended care, participating in any after school activities. If a student’s phone is heard or seen, it will be confiscated and a parent/guardian will need to come to the school to retrieve the cell phone and the student will forfeit the right to have the phone in their possession at school. Additional disciplinary actions can include detention, suspension and in some circumstances, expulsion.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Among the extracurricular activities that may be offered are Peace and Justice, Book Club, Environmental Club, Student Council, Band, Handbells, Concert Choir, Angel Chorus, Art Club, and sports programs including basketball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, cross country, swimming, golf, and flag football. Policies and procedures for each activity are issued by the advisor and must be followed. Students need to be picked up within ten (10) minutes of the scheduled time. If a student is not picked up he/she will be sent to the Extended Care program. Participation in sports requires that both parents and students read and sign the Sports Contract. An Athletic Handbook containing policies is issued to each participant. Students are encouraged to participate in events in the wider community. Opportunities are presented to participate in various writing and speaking contests, Art and Science fairs, and Health and Fitness fundraisers. Students participate in the annual City of Titusville Awards Ceremony. St. Teresa School is an active member of the Titusville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Car Duty/Safety Patrol Morning safety patrol begins at 7:35 A.M. Safety patrol students are dismissed at 3:30 P.M. and 2:15 P.M. on Wednesdays. Students from grades 5-8 are expected to serve as safety patrols. This is a wonderful service to the school and provides an opportunity for students to develop responsibility and leadership skills.

National Junior Honor Society The purpose of this organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character. St. Teresa School is a charter member of this organization and will abide by the rules of this organization. Membership in a local chapter is an honor bestowed upon a student. The candidate must be a member of the Seventh or Eighth Grade and designated as eligible by the chapter bylaws. Candidates must have a cumulative scholastic average of at least 87 percent or the equivalent standard of excellence. Candidates shall then be evaluated on the basis of service, leadership, character, and citizenship. The selection procedure shall be determined by the faculty council and shall be consistent with the rules and regulations of the National Junior Honor Society. Members who fall below the standards shall be promptly warned in writing by the chapter advisor and given a reasonable amount of time to correct the deficiency. In case of flagrant violation of school rules or civil laws, a member does not necessarily have to be warned. This chapter will determine one or more service projects for a year. All members shall actively participate in these projects. The NJHS advisor will provide detailed information to the Seventh grade class at the beginning of the school year.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Emergency drills, announced and unannounced, are held regularly throughout the year. The school has procedures for evacuation and lock-down. Code Yellow and Code Red are used for Lock-Down Procedures. When we are practicing these drills, you will not be able to have access to the school office. The following directions for evacuation are effective from the first sound of the alarm bell until the ALL CLEAR signal to return to class is given:

Fire Drill:

Maintain absolute silence

Walk in single file at a rapid pace, but do NOT run

Obey all directions given by the teacher

Proceed to designated safe area

Severe Weather:

Warning for severe weather is given

Maintain silence and follow teacher directions

Go immediately to first floor, indoor area as time permits. The hallway in Building # 100 is a designated safe area

If caught away from safe area, seek shelter on/in enclosed area, lower floor away from windows/doors

Secure protection from desks and other pieces of furniture in classrooms

Stay away from windows and doors

Assume Tornado Protection Position when directed

Wait for all clear from supervisor

In the event of severe weather conditions or another emergency, this school will follow the directives of the Brevard County School Board and have an unplanned non-attendance day. It is important that parents talk to their children and have a reunification plan in place in case they or their children cannot follow regular dismissal/pick-up procedures. If Brevard County Public Schools close, we MUST close. This is a Diocesan directive. However , the determination of when to reopen will be made by the school administration in consultation with the Diocesan Office of Schools in Orlando.

Yellow Flag Arrival/Dismissal Procedures During inclement weather, the yellow flag will be posted at both school entryways. At arrival, this indicates the parent/guardian may choose to park and escort the student to the gate or may drop off realizing that no safety patrols are on duty. At dismissal, the yellow flag indicates the parent/guardian should park (facing West) and pick up the student in the gymnasium.

Red Flag Dismissal Procedures During severe weather (lightning and severe weather warnings), parents/guardians are advised to park and remain in the vehicle until severe weather clears. All students will be dismissed from the Mercy Building (100 bulding).

Policies contained in this handbook may be amended as the need arises without prior notice. A reasonable attempt will be made to notify students and parents of such changes. This handbook was developed as a guide to a successful educational experience. Interpretation and application of all policies rest solely with the administration of St. Teresa School.
