www.ormistonhorizonacademy.co.uk Newsletter 28 6th May 2016
Students of the Week These students have been chosen because they
have made an outstanding contribution to academy
life. This week’s star students are:
Year 7 Charlotte Cooke (SIMa)
Year 8 Emily Hackney (DWWc)
Year 9 Luke Hayes (MRRc)
Year 10 Adam Cartwright (CBBd)
Year 11 Liam Ashton (MDGd)
6th Form Leon Pollett (12AAMd)
Well done! We are very proud of you.
This week sixty Year 7 students completed their Level
3 Bikeability qualification.
Availability on the course was on a first come, first
served basis with a total of four sessions, which ran
over two days. Students participating were asked to
bring their own clothes, but both bikes and helmets
were supplied if students couldn’t provide their own.
Students completed a range of activities associated
with different skills. In this course the students learnt
how to deal with traffic on busy roads, how to turn
into major roads from minor roads and how to ride
safely on a roundabout. Also, they were taught how
to use the cycle lanes properly and how to overtake
a parked car without harm. The instructors were very
friendly and explained the activities clearly so that
everyone understood.
Biking Brilliance
Year 7 students were presented with their
own personal copy of the New Testament
bible at the academy on Tuesday.
Speakers from The Gideons International charity, who
provide complimentary copies of the bible to school
children across the country, were invited to give a
special assembly to the students by R.E. teacher, Mrs
Mallard.
The charity’s aim is to give children the opportunity
to read the bible for
themselves, perhaps for the
first time, and to discover
God in a personal way.
Gideons’ Gift
Theepikan Naguledran (7NAWp), who took part in
the course said: ‘The activities were very challenging,
but it was fun to be with friends.’
At the end of the session, the students who
successfully completed the course and showed a
good understanding of how to bike safely on the
road were presented with a certificate and a
fabulous green badge!
The students involved were delighted at the
opportunity to gain the biking qualification. Grace
Owen (7VMMd) said: ‘The instructors were amazing
and made the learning fun. What I learnt on the
course has definitely made me more aware of road
safety and will help me ride on the road more
confidently in the future.’

In the ‘write’ mind-set
of the Week
Our creative writing club gets together
every Thursday lunch time in ILC1. It is
all about book writing and at the
moment we are putting together a
horror story book, so please come
along and share your spooky story
ideas with us!
Our next topic will be fan-fiction and we are looking for
other students to help contribute by writing about their
favourite idols. It could be anyone you like, for example a
‘you-tuber’ or famous singer. You can use your
imagination and the storyline can be whatever you want -
maybe you meet your idol and he/she falls in love with
you! You never know, anything can happen on paper.
Book Review This week’s book review is on the Geek Girl
series by Holly Smale. There are a total of
five books in the series so far and they are
all connected. The books follow a different
part of Harriet’s life. Harriet is what everyone
would describe as a ‘geek’, however the
stories show that she is really a normal
everyday 16-year old girl. The first book tells how Harriet
comes to get a job as a model, then moves to America.
I really enjoyed reading every single one of these books
and I would recommend them to anyone who sometimes
struggles to find books that they can actually enjoy. Many
of my friends also loved these books so I would definitely
give them five stars!
