GOALSAn inspired, rigorous curriculum trains talented individuals who want the committed training of the professional actor. Stressing artistry in small classes, students bond and make lifelong contacts as they pursue their individual goals in acting.

HISTORYFor over 40 years, feedback, guidance, and high standards have been hallmarks of the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. Since its founding in 1975, thousands of actors have been trained, many of whom have gone on to important theatre and film careers. Housed in Studio Theatre, one of DC’s premier contemporary theatres, its founder Joy Zinoman heads a highly skilled faculty of 20 dedicated teachers.

LOCATIONIn the heart of DC at Logan Circle, excellent facilities and free rehearsal space are provided for actors in the 4-theatre Studio complex.

PROGRAMS ® The Core Acting Program includes a year of

Realism, a year of Classical training, and a year of study in Acting Styles. Begin with Actor’s Process or Principles of Realism.

® A wide range of Body + Voice classes are offered to develop individual physicality and vocal technique. Special classes in Directing, Auditioning, and Musical Theatre can further develop your skills.

® The Young Actors Program for teens offers Saturday classes throughout the year and a vigorous all-day Summer Intensive experience. Half of the places in the program are held for talented scholarship students.

® Two-day weekend workshops expose students to specific topics in acting. Master classes introduce Stage Combat, Alexander Technique, Singer’s Process, Voice for Professionals, and more.

REALISMACTOR’S PROCESSInstructors: Bannon, Garner, Kammann, Yglesias Silver

Develop and sharpen self-awareness, observation, creative imagination, improvisational skills, and the articulate use of the body and voice. Build and heighten responsiveness to action. Work on a monologue.

No prerequisite: Call for placement

PRINCIPLES OF REALISMInstructors: Arthur, Debelack, Paris, Burke Pitt, Wells

Develop a process using stimulus-response, motivation, characterization, interplay, text, and subtext. Includes pantomime, improvisation, and scene work on a character from a realistic play.

Recommended in conjunction with Movement 1.

No prerequisite: Call for placement

CHARACTER AND EMOTIONInstructors: Arthur, Paris, Seiden

Further develop skills in characterization, realistic playing, and emotional connection.

Recommended in conjunction with Voice 1.

Prerequisite: Recommendation of the faculty after successful completion of Principles of Realism

CLASSICSSHAKESPEARE 1Instructors: Burke Pitt, Seiden, Zinoman

Learn classical acting techniques, focusing on vocal and physical clarity, textual interpretation, vocal-emotional connections, diction, the use of imagery and tone color, utilizing soliloquies and scene study.

Recommended in conjunction with Classical Voice and Movement.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Character and Emotion

GREEK TRAGEDYInstructor: Debelack, Zinoman

Explore choruses, monologues, and scenes from the work of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Emphasis is on oral interpretation and physical control to deepen emotional connection while working in an ensemble.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Shakespeare 1

SHAKESPEARE 2Instructor: Zinoman

An advanced course which deepens the actor’s experience in classical style, includes rigorous work in the preparation of monologues and scenes. Special emphasis is on the interpretation of text and vocal intensity.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Shakespeare 1 and Comedy or permission of instructor

STYLESCOMEDYInstructor: Paris

An advanced class in comedic technique and style. Scene work in four periods: Commedia dell’arte to Shakespeare, Restoration, Comedy of Wit and Manners, and Modern Comedy.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Shakespeare 1 and Greek Tragedy

SHAW, IBSEN, CHEKHOVInstructor: Zinoman

An advanced scene study class focusing on multi-dimensional characters.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Shakespeare 1 and Comedy or permission of instructor

An advanced scene study class exploring the styles of the modernist masters.

Identify, relax, and warm up parts of the body that hold tension. Develop free movement and expressiveness. Work on posture, gesture, walking, and expanding physical potential.

Recommended in conjunction with Principles of Realism.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUEInstructor: Bradley

Identify and replace unwanted habits with greater body awareness, poise, and ease of movement. Explore the Alexander Technique to allow for more variety in movement and expression.

IMPROVISATION 1Instructors: Bannon, Garner, Yglesias Silver

Encourage response to stimuli with honesty, spontaneity, and creativity. Focus on sustained and relaxed awareness, resulting in more dynamic play and interactions.

IMPROVISATION 2Instructor: Yglesias Silver

Emphasis on the dynamic relationship between self-as-instrument and the performed material. Class ensemble will develop a variety of improvisational performances.

Prerequisite: Improvisation 1 or permission of instructor

VOICEVOICE 1Instructors: Campion, Diggs

Provides basic techniques for vocal preparation and performance. Develop projection, vocal quality, range, energy, and expressiveness through relaxation exercises and basic physical work.

Recommended in conjunction with Character and Emotion.

VOICE 2Instructor: Diggs

Intensive study of the vocal instrument for those who have already acquired basic vocal skills. Stimulates emotional, physical, and vocal range in order to creatively illuminate the text. Modern and classical monologues are explored.

Prerequisite: Voice 1 or permission of the instructor

CLASSICAL VOICE AND MOVEMENTTeam-taught by Diggs & Yglesias Silver

Vocal production and movement improvisation designed to expand vocal and physical potential. Develop clarity in classical material with projection, range, and energy as focal points.

Recommended in conjunction with Shakespeare 1.

SPEECHSTANDARD STAGE SPEECHInstructor: Campion

Provides tools and strategies for speakers with regional dialects or foreign accents. Learn basic and advanced tools for accent modification and dialect acquisition including: articulation warm-ups, speech anatomy, and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Apply to text using the General American Dialect.

DIALECTSInstructor: Campion

Introduces actors to the fundamentals of mastering any accent or dialect. Build listening and imitation skills in the acquisition of up to four dialects for the stage. Utilizes articulation warm-ups, online dialect resources, and basic phonetics to perform authentically and intelligibly in dialect. For beginners and advanced students.

For actors, directors, playwrights, and filmmakers. Focus on script analysis and preparation, blocking and movement, business, uses of improvisation and working with actors, rhythm and tempo, theatrical organization, and integration of all aspects of technical theatre. Format consists of lecture and scene presentation.

Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor

Prepare to audition. Modern and classical pieces in comic and serious modes, building a repertoire of audition material with attention to individual selection and professional presentation. Develop cold-reading skills, receive help with headshots and resumes, and gain working knowledge of the business of acting.

MUSICAL THEATRESINGER’S PROCESSInstructor: Fulginiti-Shakar

Basics of singing with an emphasis on freeing the body; expanding the breath capacity and creating sound; learning to sing on pitch; exploring and understanding lyrics, rhythm, and emotion of a song; and singing with a piano.

MUSICAL THEATREInstructor: Fulginiti-Shakar

Enhance your ability to create unique song interpretations, find your character’s arc throughout the song, and explore realistic performance techniques to create bold and vibrant characters. Students will find their true singing voice, reduce singing anxiety, and combine singing and acting skills to choose and prepare repertory. For singers with some experience.

Techniques to relax the body and expand the breath, explore the process of making sound, singing on pitch, discovering and releasing the emotion of a song, and learning to sing with a piano.

STAGE COMBAT WORKSHOP Instructor: Hunter

Use hand-to-hand combat to portray the illusion of fighting. Using basic weapons, emphasis is on enhancing physical skill and confidence with a safe and realistic technique.

Teen weekend conservatory: Saturday morning program ideal for the young actor looking to explore acting training. Vocal and physical warmups, ensemble work, scenes and monologues from classical and contemporary plays. The curriculum, modeled after our rigorous adult training program, increases concentration, observation skills, and joy in performing.

Each class culminates in a final showing open to family and friends. Register online or call the Conservatory to request a scholarship application.

SUMMER INTENSIVEInstructors: Diggs, Burke Pitt, Rogers, Vaky

Two Intensive 3-week 30-hour-per-week programs for teens ages 13-17. Rigorous and demanding, the all day program offers voice, movement, ensemble, and improvisation in the morning and classes focusing on scenes and monologues from contemporary and classical literature in the afternoon. Young actors participate in one or both 3-week sessions.

Students present individual and group work for family and friends at class end. Register online or call the Conservatory to request a scholarship application.

AUDITIONING STUDENT THAIS MENENDEZ

JOY ZINOMAN (Director of Curriculum and Teacher Training) is a master teacher and the founder of both Studio Theatre and the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

She has been teaching and directing for over 40 years in the US and abroad, and created the Conservatory’s core acting curriculum. Before retiring from Studio Theatre, she directed 70 productions and garnered over 225 Helen Hayes Award nominations for the Theatre, and she received numerous awards including Outstanding Direction and Visionary Leadership in the Arts. Training: Northwestern University, Radcliffe College, American University.

ZACH CAMPION (Education Manager) is a certified Assistant Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework® and freelance dialect/text coach drawing on the principles of

Knight-Thompson Speechwork. Recent dialect coaching credits include mainstage productions at Studio Theatre, Olney, UMBC, and 1st Stage. Training: BFA, Texas State University; MFA Virginia Commonwealth University; Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

ANDERSON WELLS (Education and Administrative Assistant) is an actor, singer, and member of the acting faculty at the Conservatory. He has worked with theatre

education programs at Centerstage in Maryland and Tyler Hill Camp in Pennsylvania. He has performed as a singer with DC’s Vox Pop and as an actor with Pinky Swear Productions and Brave Spirits Theatre. Training: BFA, Acting, University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

CAROL ARTHUR has performed locally at Studio Theatre, The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Studio 2ndStage, The Source Theatre, Longacre Lea

Productions, Adventure Theatre, and Atlas Performing Arts Center. She plays steel pan as a member of the DC area band Little Red & The Renegades. Training: Oberlin College, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

NANCY BANNON is a performer, writer, director, and teacher. She was recently seen in Occupied Territories at Theater Alliance. Nancy was on the faculty at SUNY

Purchase and Rutgers University. She has taught at The Juilliard School, NYU, and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. Recent theatre work includes: Cornfield, Puncture, The Pod Project and, as Movement Director, Romeo and Juliet on Broadway and Murder Ballad and Pas de Deux for Studio Theatre. Nancy is the recipient of three Princess Grace Awards and a New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) Award. Training: The Juilliard School.

DIANA BRADLEY has been a certified Alexander Technique teacher since 1979. Diana has taught in the DC area for over 25 years, including at the Baltimore School for the Arts,

Arena Stage, and the University of Maryland. Diana teaches around the US and internationally. She is on the faculty at The Barstow Alexander Technique Institute and The Alexander Technique Teacher Training program at CBAS.

ELENA DAY is most well-known as the creator of Cirque du Soleil’s signature character, The Green Bird. Her work as a director, coach, and consultant has taken her

around the world, and given her the opportunity to work in clowning, circus, street arts, and traditional theater. Her background is in Lecoq-based physical theater, improvisation, modern dance, and yoga.

KATE DEBELACK has been seen in productions at Studio Theatre and Studio 2ndStage, and has performed with other DC theatres including The Shakespeare Theatre

Company, Forum Theatre, Solas Nua, Taffety Punk, Longacre Lea, and MetroStage, and was a company member with Cherry Red Productions. Regional credits include the New York International Fringe Festival and Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. Training: Western Washington University, the Cabaret Conference at Yale, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

DENISE DIGGS has taught voice for over 30 years at the Baltimore School for the Arts. She also has taught at Towson University, Duke Ellington School of the Arts,

and privately for media professionals. She has appeared at Arena Stage, Studio Theatre, Center Stage, Olney Theatre Center, La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, Round House Theatre, Theatre of the First Amendment, and Everyman Theatre.

CATHERINE ELIOT,CMA, MA, OTR/L is a Laban Certified Movement Analyst and an occupational therapist. She has a master’s in kinesiology. Catherine has

taught dance and movement classes for the Wolf Trap Resident Artist program and in the Washington metro area since 1991. She has worked as a movement therapist with a wide range of individuals.

GEORGE FULGINITI-SHAKAR is a music director, conductor, and vocal coach and was chosen for the TCG Artists Bulletin for Music Directors, Composers, and

Arrangers in Washington DC. He has worked at Arena Stage, Studio Theatre, The Shakespeare Theatre Company, The Kennedy Center, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Signature Theatre, and Round House Theatre. George leads Master Classes at American University, Catholic University, and the University of Maryland. Awards: Helen Hayes Award for Musical Direction.

JULIE GARNER has performed with Studio Theatre, Forum Theatre, Constellation Theatre, Faction of Fools, Imagination Stage, Rorschach Theatre, Molotov

Theatre, and Lean & Hungry Theatre. She has traveled with Cirque Voila! and the KimTom International Clown Festival and has many film and commercial credits. Julie has been teaching Improvisation and Theatre Arts since 1999. Training: University of Maryland, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

ROBB HUNTER is a certified teacher of Stage Combat for the Society of American Fight Directors. As a professional fight director he has choreographed for many local

theatres including The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Arena Stage, Center Stage, Washington National Opera, Olney Theatre Center, The Baltimore Shakespeare Festival, Rep Stage, Ford’s Theatre, and Studio Theatre. Robb teaches at Catholic University, McDaniel College, and American University. Training: Virginia Commonwealth University.

SANDRA KAMMANN is a director, choreographer, performing artist, anthropologist, and ritualist concerned with issues of human expression and vision.

Creating multi-art performance projects since 1978, she is Artistic Director of the dance/theatre troup Sisters of One Eye (founded in 1986). She is Founding Director of Fertile Ground, a non-profit organization dedicated to exploring the arts as ritual, and their impact on individual and communal consciousness. Sandra holds an MA in Cultural Anthropology: Performance of Myth and Ritual, graduating with honors from The George Washington University.

NANCY PARIS has been associated with the Acting Conservatory since its founding 40 years ago. As a veteran DC actress, she has performed at Arena Stage,

Georgetown Shakespeare Theatre, Source Theatre, The Actors Theatre of Washington, and in numerous productions on all four stages at Studio Theatre. MADELEINE BURKE PITT has performed at Studio Theatre and Studio 2ndStage, as well as at many other DC theatres, including The Folger Shakespeare Theatre, The

Keegan Theatre, and Solas Nua (Helen Hayes nomination). Madeleine taught and directed youth theatre for over 10 years and has also taught workshops at American University and the University of Maryland. Training: Catholic University (MFA program), Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

ROMA ROGERS has performed at The Kennedy Center, Studio Theatre, Washington Shakespeare Theatre, Studio 2ndStage, and The Actors

Theatre of Washington. Roma also has television and film credits, and has worked as a print model. Training: Penn State University, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

SERGE SEIDEN has been a member of the Conservatory faculty for 20 years and is currently the Producing Director of Mosaic Theater Company of DC. Serge has

held numerous positions at Studio Theatre including Producing Director, Resident Stage Manager, Casting Director, and Literary Manager. Serge has directed 30 productions for Studio Theatre and recently directed at Synetic Theater, MetroStage, Olney Theater Center, Adventure Theater, and Theater J. Awards: Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Director, Resident Musical. Training: Swarthmore College, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

COLETTE YGLESIAS SILVER has taught dance at The Dance Exchange, the University of Maryland, George Washington University, and The Street 70

Theatre Apprentice training program and has been on the faculty of the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory since 1981. She was the artistic director of Dance Arts/Moving Arts from 1980-87. Training: The Academy of the Washington Ballet, The Juilliard School.

MATTHEW VAKY was a member of The Guthrie Acting Company in Minneapolis and worked as an actor, director, and writer for Mixed Blood Theatre,

SteppingStone Theatre, and The Playwrights Center. Locally, he has performed for Center Stage, GALA Hispanic Theatre, and Quotidian. His one man show, ROGER (Not His Real Name), will be produced in New York at the United Solo Festival. Matthew teaches at Capital City Charter School. Training: Carnegie-Mellon University, University of St. Catherine.

The Linda Levy ScholarshipPresented by the Lorraine S. Dreyfuss Theatre Education Fund. The recipient of the Linda Levy Scholarship is chosen by the faculty and presented to 2-3 students a semester based on merit or demonstrated need.

WORK STUDYWork Study opportunities are available for new and returning students to the Conservatory.
