Dao MuseumChengdu, ChinaThe Design for the Museum of Taoism and its surrounding landscape at the base of Qingcheng Mountain focuses on creating an environment that expresses the core principals of the Tao Philosophy. It aims to create spaces embedded in nature that provoke an emotional response and gives the visitor an intuitive understanding of the elusive meanings of the Tao Philosophy. The Main Museum building and its associated retail program have been carefully embedded into the surrounding landscape following Tao principals to create a design that is continuous and homogenous within the landscape. The museum itself embodies the idea of mountains and water. Following the principals of balance and the continuous play of antithetic energies, interior and exterior spaces are constantly informing and energizing each other. The result is an extremely delicate appearing vessel full of communicating sequences and sublime spaces. Well-positioned moments of reunion with earth, sky, water; the dark and the bright; the museum creates a vivid space full of surprise. It is a journey through time and space towards elementary feelings and perceptions.

Dongbu Art CentreThe Art Centre is mostly an Art and Auction Centre which hosts artists from a variety of disciplines in studios on the upper levels, while providing various facilities as resources for production and display of the work. The program is mainly divided between the fl oors, but the internal atrium facing the plaza promotes this transparency between the different levels of the building allowing different disciplines to share ideas and relationships.

To give the Art Centre a more individual identity we began by investigating nature and applying ideas that we found to the overall massing, and treatment of the facade. This combined with the surrounding spatial conditions, the shape of the building was further developed to create a dynamic entity with iconic sensibility. Infl uenced by sedimentation layers of natural rocks, helped us to create a porous skin blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. These horizontal divisions gave us opportunities for terraces relating to the various public and private functions within the building. These terraces help the building express a transparency and connection between the internal artistic functions and the more public areas outside of our building.

Guo Xin TowerThis project was a competition entry for new offi ce tower for Gou Xin (a fi nancial security company) located in Yi Wu China. The overall shape of the massing is straight forward so that the building becomes part of the master plan landscape within this new development. It is focused on achieving landmark status through its simplicity.

In order to add value through the design we created some very simple moves in the facade. These moves allow the building to “Breath”. They create an elegant treatment of the facade, as well as give value to the occupant of the building. There are now 4 times as many corners offi ces. Cross ventilation is also possible through the interior spaces.

The podium is separated from the main building to create an atrium on the lower levels. The program of the podium is mostly conference rooms and meeting places. The openness of the atrium with balconies and bridges allow for many new chance meeting.

Jiang SuThis project was a commission for a large mix-use Building in JiangSu City, including typical ground levels of retail with residential and offi ce towers above, the challenge with this project was to fi nd a solution to organize the large amount of program whilst breaking free from typical Tower/Podium as well as typical Shopping Mall typologies.

It was important for this project that we allowed it to open up to the outside, to allow for balconies and public common spaces. Letting this outside space in has different, but equally benefi cial qualities for each different program element. This opening up, allowed us to start to break apart the shape of the building, and create something new.

We decided to use block shapes in order for effi ciency, and so that we could focus our efforts in allowing for these open spaces. The fi nal composition of these blocks creates a strong landmark building, as well as being expressive of the speed of the car traveling along its main street frontage.
