The World Is YoursImagine exploring the cobblestone streets of Old Havana listening to the sounds of Cuban street musicians. Or watching the fireworks on Chinese New Year from a rooftop in Shanghai. Or browsing the colorful stalls of London’s Covent Garden Market on your way home.
Each year, around 400 Eckerd students set off for parts unknown. You could be one of them.

Study abroad is in our DNA. Long before other American colleges were sending students overseas, Eckerd changed its academic calendar to create a one-month Winter Term so students could travel abroad.
Eckerd’s founders knew there were things students could learn only through study abroad—tolerance, compassion, an awareness of what it means to be a citizen of the world.
“Travel teaches us that there is something beyond the U.S.,” says Diane Ferris, Eckerd’s director of international education. “It’s a different way of living daily— students learn to integrate into a new culture for an extended period of time. They come back transformed.”

Let the Journey BeginThe vast majority of student travelers take part in our three-and-a-half-week Winter Term and Spring-into-Summer trips. Others enroll in our semester-long program at Eckerd’s London Study Centre, in our exchange programs or in affiliate programs.
• Many study trips are led by Eckerd professors, which allows the learning to begin before you leave, intensify on location and continue after you return to campus.
• At Eckerd, you can study abroad and still graduate in four years.
• All study abroad courses award academic credit toward your degree, except our Alternative Spring Break Service trips.
• Staff in our International Education Office are eager to help with program selection and applications.

World ViewsEye-Opening. Life-Changing. Powerful. Priceless.
Eckerd students find what motivates them academically, professionally and personally. They connect in profound ways with those they travel with and those they meet along the trail. Students come back to Eckerd’s campus in St. Petersburg, Florida, changed.
“My freshman year I went to Italy, and my sophomore year I went to Argentina—both were language immersion trips. Winter Term of my junior year I spent in Southeast Asia, and my senior year I went to China for three weeks. I love to travel, and that last trip helped me realize that international business is what I want to do.”

“The people in Cambodia are so welcoming, so happy and so giving. Seeing how they can do things much simpler than we do—without cell phones and technology—really makes me appreciate the smaller things. It taught me not to take anything for granted.”

“I was incredibly lucky at Eckerd to have nine distinct study abroad experiences, and it definitely helped me get into graduate school. The Kennedy School of Government recommends at least three years of professional experience before students apply. I argued that my international study and on-campus leadership experience should count toward the professional requirement. They seemed to agree.”
