Technical Report 103 459 - Study on system architecture
Objectives of the Work Item
Provide a reference model of FRMCS system architecture from a functional point of view
Provide a high level description of the functions that address FRMCS requirements (as specified by FRMCS URS and resulting Use Cases)
Define internal and external boundaries of the FRMCS system (e.g. transport versus applications, external systems and networks, etc.)
Define further potential steps

Technical Report 103 459 - Study on system architecture
Methodology
Analysis of the user applications, requirements and use cases
Modelling of a reference architecture based on existing 3GPP functional domains
Discussion on architectural considerations (e.g. choice of 3GPP functional building block)
Definition of FRMCS Reference Points, interfaces and interactions of network functions
Definition of external FRMCS interfaces for GSM-R interworking and interconnect with other legacy systems (e.g. ETCS)

Discussions in the drafting group
Open points
For data centric Railway Applications (e.g. ETCS or ATO): MC data functions and features / or plain data pipe?
QoS management: E-UTRAN / or 5G-NR?
Need for E2E Network Slicing / or precursors (e.g. DCN, DECOR, eDECOR)?
Registration, service selection and routing in the signalling control plane: SIP Core / or IMS?
Communication recording: UE based / or centralised?

ETSI Standards in support of Railway Interoperability
Technical Specification for Interoperability
Control Command and Signalling TSI currently mandates GSM-R… and FRMCS bearer flexibility in the future
Regulatory framework necessary for coordinated migration for Infrastructure Managers and Railway Undertakings
Definition of technology and protocols needed for the interface between FRMCS and ETCS
Flexible / future-proof approach neededETCS installed base to be considered in migration strategy
Cybersecurity framework to be considered as well
