Researchuniversitiesfocusontheindependentpracticeofre-search-orientedworkinacademicorprofessionalsetting.Uni-versities of applied sciences are more practically-oriented,preparingstudentsdirectlyforspecificcareers.AthirdsmallerbranchofhighereducationisprovidedbyInstitutesforInterna-tionalEducationwhichofferprogrammesdesignedespeciallyforinternationalstudents.
ThereareGovernment-funded institutions entitledtoawardof-ficiallyrecognizeddegreesandlegallyprotectedtitlestograduatesoftheiraccreditedprogrammes.Toobtaingovernmentfunding,institutionsmustsatisfyanumberofqualityrequirements.
Government-approved institutions arenotfundedbythego-vernment,buthavetherighttoawardofficiallyrecognizedde-greesandlegallyprotectedtitlestograduatesoftheiraccreditedprogrammes.Governmentapprovalisofficialrecognitionthatthequalityofaprivateeducationalinstitutionhasbeeninspectedandapproved.
Private institutions thathavenotappliedforgovernmentfun-dingorapproval.Thefactthataninstitutionisnotgovernment-fundedorgovernment-approveddoesnotnecessarilymeanthatthequalitytheyprovideisbelowpar.Theycannotofferbache-lor’sprogrammesforaccreditation.

TheNetherlandshave13universitieswhichtrainstudentsforin-dependentpracticeofscience.TheoldestisLeidenwhichwases-tablishedin1575.
Theuniversitiesdonotallhaveprogrammesofeducationandre-searchinthesamedisciplines.Nineoffereducationinabroadrangeoffields:naturalsciences,health,economics,law,behaviourandsociety,languageandcul-ture.ThesearetheuniversitiesofLeiden,Amsterdam(2institu-tions), Groningen, Utrecht, Maastricht, Nijmegen, Tilburg andRotterdam.Threeuniversitiesspecializemainlyinengineering(Delft,Twente,Eindhoven),andonespecializesinagriculture(Wageningen).Alongside the traditional institutions is theOpen University,whichoffershighereducationdistancelearning(someofitsstudyprogrammesareinEnglish).UNIVERSITIES OF APPLIED SCIENCES (Hogescholen)The «Hogescholen» are degree-awarding institutionswhichconcentrateonappliedscience,artsandtechnology.Studentsarepreparedforprofessionsthatrequirescientificknowledgeaswellasskillsforapplyingthatknowledge.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION INSTITUTESTheNetherlandshaveseveralhighereducationinstitutionsdevo-tedspeciallytointernationaleducation,orIE.TheIEinstitutesfea-turedevelopment-orientededucationinawiderangeoffieldsandondifferentlevels.ThepossibilitiesvaryfromshortcoursestoPhD.degrees.Englishisusuallythelanguageofteachingforthosecourses.
RankingThesystemsofqualityassuranceandaccreditationguaranteethateducationofferedatalluniversitiesanduniversitiesofprofessio-
naleducationinHollandmeetsthesamehighstandards.Thereisnoofficialranking.WhenDutchstudentsdecideonwheretheywanttostudy,theydonotthinkintermsof‘thebestinstitution’.Instead,theylookforanyparticularfeaturesthatmaydistinguishoneuniversityoruniversityofprofessionaleducationfromano-ther,suchasspecializationoracademictradition.
DIPLOMAS
ThehighereducationintheNetherlandsisorganisedaroundathree-cycledegreesystem,consistingofbachelor’s,master’sandPhDdegrees.
Bachelor’s degrees Abachelor’sprogrammeatauniversityrequiresthreeyearsoffull-time study (180 credits) to complete while a bachelor’s pro-grammeofferedbyauniversityofappliedsciencesrequiresfouryearsoffull-timestudy(240credits).
Inuniversitiesofappliedsciencesinitialdegreeprogrammesalsorequireatleast3yearstocomplete,attheendofwhichaBache-lor’sdegreeisawarded.Anessentialcomponentofallthosepro-

Master’s degreesDependingonthediscipline,master’sprogrammesatuniversities,universitiesofappliedsciencesandinstitutesforInternationalEducationwilllastonetotwoyears(60-120credits).
PhDThedoctorate(PhD)isonlyofferedatuniversitiesandtakesatleastfouryears.Amaster’sdegreeiscompulsoryforadmission.
GETTING IN…
Tobeadmittedtoaprogrammeofhigherstudy,youshouldfirstcontacttheinstitutionthatofferstheprogramme.Youwillneedtostartplanningyourstayayearinadvance.
RequirementsThemainrequirementforadmissiontoaBachelor’sprogrammeisasecondary-schooldiplomaattheappropriatelevel.Foreignstudentsmusthaveadiplomajudgedequivalenttotheminimumdiplomarequired.Therearealsostudyprogrammes-intheartsforexample-forwhichinstitutionssettheirownadditionalre-quirements.
Theinstitutionsmaysetadditionalrequirements,suchasknow-ledgeoftheDutchlanguageandsecondary-schoolspecializationinspecificsubjects.

Furthermoreitisessentialforforeignstudentstobeabletospeak,readandwriteEnglishwell(especiallywhentheywanttoattendadegreecourseheldinEnglish).StudentsmusthavepassedanEnglishlanguagetest.IELTSandTOEFLarecommonlyaccepted,butinstitutionsmayacceptothertestsaswell.Therequiredscoresareatleast550(paperbased)or213(com-puterbased)forTOEFL.ForIELTSascoreofatleast6isrequired.
Learning DutchYouwillusuallyhavetolearntospeakDutchifyouplantoenrolasaregularstudent,unlessyouplantofollowaninternationalcourseinEnglish.TherearevariouspossibilitiestolearnDutch.Especiallyinthemonthspriortothestartoftheacademicyear,mostinstitutionsofhighereducationintheNetherlandsofferDutchlessonsforforeignstudents.
Nuffic-Netherlandsorganizationforinternationalcooperationinhighereducationpublishesafacts-sheetwiththeiraddresses.Itiscalled«Dutchlanguagecoursesforeignstudents».Munici-paleducationdepartmentscanalsogiveyoualistofthelanguagecoursesavailablelocally.

Tuition feesEducationinHollandisnotfree,buttuitionfeesarereasonablecomparedwithothercountries.
Thefeesthatforeignstudentspayforregistrationandtuitionvaryfromoneinstitutiontothenext,sincetheinstitutionssetthesefeesthemselves.StudentsfromEUcountrieshavetopaytuitionfeesaround1670€ayear.ForEnglish-taughtprogrammesaswellasMaster’sde-grees,tuitionfeesmightbemuchhigher.PeoplefromcountriesoutsideEUhavetopayevenhighertuitionfees.
ACADEMIC YEARTheacademicyearislong,startingattheendofAugustanden-dinginmid-June.Programmesaredesignedtorequire40hoursofworkaweek,includingbothcontacthoursandhoursofinde-pendentwork.
DISTANCE LEARNINGTheDutchOpen Universiteit Nederland isauniversityorinsti-tutionfordistancelearningforhighereducationathigheranduniversitylevel.Thismeansthatstudentsdonotattendclassesbutstudyathome.TheOpenUniversiteitusesavarietyofme-thodsfordistancelearning,includingwrittenmaterials,thein-ternet,andoccasionaleveningseminarsordaysessions.

ENTRY REGULATIONSTherearenospecificrequirementsconcerningresidencepermitand insurance for studentswho are citizens of the EuropeanUnion.Thosestudentshardlyneedaresidencepermit(institu-tionsofhighereducationjustmightrecommenditinordertogetsomeadvantageswithlibraries,publictransport,sportsfacilitiesetc.).Togetthispermitfromthe«AlienpoliceDepartment»orfromtheImmigrationDepartment»ofthemunicipalities,youmustgiveevidencethatyouareregisteredataninstitutionofhi-ghereducation.Thefeeis28€peryear.
COSTS OF LIVINGExperienceshowsthattoliveintheNetherlandsforoneyearcostsaforeignstudentbetween800.-€and1.100.-€amonth.Thisisneededtocoverdailyexpensesandhousing.AnaverageroominHollandcostssomewherebetween300.-€and600.-€amonth.
