Questions From Readers Prior to Session…

(1) What edge applications need a very high data ingest and compute platform that can handle both ingest and real time analytics at the same time and store data for real time and later use? We know of cyber-security, packet inspection and others - your thoughts?

(2) While many industrial IoT devices are installed in cities or other network-rich locations and may often benefit from a mains power connection, agricultural IoT devices are typically off-grid, battery operated, and in sparsely populated (both people and network towers) areas. What does Telit suggest for an agricultural IoT solution for a battery-operated device that may be mounted at theground level (say to monitor soil moisture or nutrients) within rows of crops, such as corn (which tend to degrade the link budget as they grow), in an area that isn't a top cellular market?

(3) I am worried about chips having back doors in my IT Modules. Is there a strategy with the Radio where I can make sure the traffic is point to point?

(4) I would like to use a water testing solution that does not require lab results. What sensors do you recommend?

(5) I have a problem with staff not closing the refrigerator door. I want to access the camera feed that shows the door but on a delay. What is the best approach.

(6) I have a client who has legacy PLCs on the factory floor and they want me to add analytics any sense as to how to probe their solutions to understand how I an improve their business intelligence?

Response:

Security/Surveillance Applications… An alarm system with a camera that as soon a motion is detected needs to send video collected in real time from the camera to a consumption and archival point.

Infotainment… Video stream inbound and/or webcam streaming video and other data outbound and (e.g. car info, temp info, etc)

Response:

In situations where you do not have adequate or reliable cellular coverage, one option would be to create a local LoRa network that transmits data from the field sensors to a centralized aggregation gateway, and from the gateway, transmit the data upstream with a wired or satellite backhaul connection. Customers with plantations in remote areas often require this type of solution approach.

Response:

Back doors in general are disabled by default in cellular modules and enabled only by local commands (Restricted AT Commands). The administrator of the possible back door is in general the module integrator.

Unlicensed band point-to-point radio technology or short-range aggregation to a wired backhaul uplink would be typical solution approaches if this was truly a concern.

(4) I would like to use a water testing solution that does not require lab results. What sensors do you recommend?

Response:

This depends a lot on the ‘water environment’ you are measuring and the ‘data’ you are trying to obtain. The customer might be interested in detecting illegal activities from a factory, so they will need to look for pollutants coming from process activities from that factory.

Common parameters that are measured in water are:

Temperature: This is an indicator of hot pollution near nuclear plants, as they need to refrigerate constantly due to their processes. Not very common.

Dissolved oxygen: If there is not much oxygen, you will not find a lot of wildlife. Good indicator related to temperature.

Conductivity, related to ions in water: This could mean there are too many ions on water. It could be due to agriculture activities, farming or even industry.

pH: Changes is pH indicate that something is going wrong. All chemical processes are influenced by pH.

Turbidity: This can be important in certain ecosystems because if there is too much turbidity, light cannot get the bottom of the river, and therefore there is no photosynthesis.

Ions:o Nitrate: clear indicator of pollution coming from agriculture, as they are using fertilizers.o Chlorine: excess of water treatment. We would always recommend the use of a lab for

water treatment processing as it is crucial for public health.

Response:

For a simple ‘maker’ solution I would recommend using a Raspberry Pi with integrated camera as the video capture and gateway. You would want to initiate the video capture based upon a motion or proximity sensor and have a reed switch sensor for the refrigerator door (open/close) to let know the state of the door being opened. You would capture video for each event and only save or transmit the video file when a timer on the door state sensor is exceeded.
