RIVERINA FOOTBALL L.EAGU • -... ----· -·- ---

Selectors have named a 32 man squad to represent the AFL against the GVFL at Robertson Oval, Wagga on May 5. the SQUad has a blend of youth and experience, and despite the loss of several very good players from last year, should give an excellent account of themselves.

EDITORIAL Coach Les Parish has gone on record as saying the squad is not completely settled and

pertormances in the 3rd round could see additional players added. Unfortunately Mark Fraser is unavail• able and his steadying play will be sorely missed.

Matches last week went as expected although Gan· main GGM had to battledespe, ately to hold out Narrandera. Also Wagga's victory over Coolamon was much easier than many people anticipated and the Tigers are looking a good side in early 1991 games.

The highlight of this weeks games will be the battle for the Fennessy Cup at Maher Oval when Turvey Park and Wagga clash Turvey won well at Leeton last week to restore confidence after their loss to Ganmaln GG M. Greg Sheppard. Terry Ness. Mark Fraser, WayrvJ Carroll (8 goals) and Phil Noack all played well and will look for a continuation of those efforts.

Wagga, as mentioned are in top form aM a major concern for this in the pertormances of youngsters such

as ro·ter Matt Hundy, centre half back Jarrod Baker, Troy Levine in the centre and Steve Priest on a wing. Experienced players Russell Durnan, Dore Brown and coach Graham Doswell complement the enthusiasm of the younger brigade.

The Cup challenge should be an exciting affair with Wagga eager to regain the trophy after holding it in 1988 and 1989. Other Sunday games see Griffith travelling to Coolamon and Leeton at home to Ganmaln GGM. The Swans, undefeated after two matches. wilt want to be wary at Coofamon as the Hoppers are a dangerous side on the rebound. Coach Gary Shaw will want the team to be very committed and show that fast weeks result was an aberration and not a true sign of lheif slrengtll.

The Swans run the ball well and an entertianing game Should ensure Leeton, with a limited preparation. are struggling but will improve as tile season progresses. Ganmain GGM took the 4 points against Narrandera but coach Tony Hughes felt many of his players were down on form. He will see this match as an opportunity for his team to regain their best fettle.

The Saturday battle between EWK and Narrandera at Gumly brings together two teams yet to open their account. The Hawks did quite well at Griffith and !lave an inspiring coach in Barry Suckling. The Eagles won plentyoftriendsatGanmainand 17yearoldTrent Cummings looks a likely type. His coach and father, Percy, will hope his team can continue to win friends and start winning games.

THIRD GRADE

Both teams in the First grade gave their 'all', a very hard battle with no quarter given. Going in to the long breaks with a slight advantage we were full of confidence. We could go on with job, but unfortunately we lost concentration fora few minutes in the start of the third quarter. Although the margin was narrow we were not able to peg back the determined lions. The team pl~yed well. a good win is not lar away. Well done everybody.Awards Trent Cummings, Mark Quilter, Peter AnthOny, Beaurepairs ward, Michael Hopwood.

The 1st grade opened their account for the season with a percentage boosting win. Terry Ness again showed his liking for the Leeton showground gaining top votes in the Vern Porter award. Others to play well were Mick Flanigan (Rules Club dinner), Garry "Tank" Shepherd (The Mug) and the haircut to first gamer "Beater" Ashcroft.

The junior netball continued their good form from last week with a good 18-3 win. Better players were Elizabeth Petzal, Renee Stratton with Andrea Johnstone winning the encouragement award.

The B grade netball "Boilers" had a great 20-3 victory with Denise Howe and Belinda Ashcroft starring, with Sonya Bourne winning the mug.

The A graders went down again 17-15. Cathy Donelly and Kelly Hill tried hard with Debbie Flanigan winning the mug.

Best wishes to Donna Lloyd who unfortunately broke her leg during the week. This week we take on arch rivals Tigers at home with a big effort needed to retain the Fennessy Cup. UP THE BULLDOGS

Big wins in the three grades highlighted the visit by Coolamon to Robertson oval last week.

The U 18s with some slock team work, won by 106 points. The Lowry and Howick awards went to Corey Bocking, Neville Dennis and Scott Evans.

The 2nds won by the odd goal or two and, are currently on top with 458%.

BLACK, YELLOW SASH

This week's game against Turvey Park will be a yard stick of early form. The Mark Anthony award went to Anthony Watson, the Walla Warehouse Towel to Jeff Willis and the Chicken Spot dinner to 'Father Time' Cox.

The main game was a little one sided as we established a handy lead early and increased it at every chance. Troy Levine dominated in the centre to take the Locksley award, Jarrod Baker did a top job in defence to claim the Wagga Warehouse towel and Mark McIntyre had his kicking boots on and with 7 goals took the Wagga Auto Parts award.

This week the big clash with Turvey Park in First and Seconds (18s game deferred till next week) only 110% effort from all players will see us in front at the siren. UP THE TIGERS

Well two wins from two starts, maybe not the most convincing. but the points are on the board.

Firsuy, TBs 3rds: Terry has his young chargers coming along quite nicely. Hav· ing his first season, young 'Dermott'Brent Hathaway only knows one way home that that straight through the w-,,re, Arn v tall timber (didn't the oldies love the after match report'). Eddie 'Eagle' Knight once again showed why he is under the caretul eye of the selectors. I could name the entire side. but it was a well disciplined effort. so just keep up the good work.

The No 2s strengthen by the return of the 'Condo Kid' had a convincing win. We have no idea what they led hirri uJ there but what a pissa B.D.G. - good support from P. King (too young to be married) and Mal (don't miss a drink) Irvin. Thanks very much to Les Whilesmitlt on his continous SUJport.

The I st XVII I, everyone tells you. they have a long way to go, why are they playing him, their not good enough, et:. etc. We all know these things (especially when we've all coached VFL sides), but let's just weigh it up: what game are we up to? Our new players are just starting to settle in. plus we may just happen to have the odd player to come back. To me its only early days yet. B.D.G. to P Bi•ow. a sterling effort (if only he didn't make silly bets). Salty would be still looking for him. Good to see Shane start to come into his own as well as Digger. Good effort fellas'

Just remember - 2 out ot 2 ain't bad. Also thanks from Elaine to all those who helped at

Kyeamba Smilll Hall at snort notice last week. Much appreciated - and thanks to the Wagga Warehouse.

LEETON DEMONS Three games. three defeats but the

supporters weren't disappointed wiltl what they saw.

The Seniors put up a sterling effort against a Turvey Park side on the rebound Imm their previous weeks defeat. Good players however weren't hard to find with Andrew Soley and Allan McPhee pulling in top games along with

Paul O'Connell in ruck and Danny Baxter at centre halfback or on the ball.

We managed to get a reserve grade side on the paddock for Turvey and they obliged by giving us a lesson in the do's and don'ts department, however the side can only improve in coming weeks provided that everyone sticks at it. Better players included Peter Paynton and Stevie Symes along with captain Swass.

The U 18s again came up against a bigger, better team and went down, but their performance was encouraging and they to will only improve as the season progresses.

This week we welcome the Lions to the showground and invite them to the alter match function in the clubrooms and for the locals that can't make it we'll see you at the Lee:on Hotel through the week.

Q.B.E. INSURANCE REPORT

VCFL

AFL Dream is Alive and Well Although controversy and debate continues to sur

round the AF L's recent restructuring proposals, the Victorian Country Football League is confident that its players will continue to be given the best opportunities available to play AFL football.

Although the restructure will result in the abolition of the AFL Under 19 Grade, the country development programs which have been developed over the past decade will continue to provide excellent opportunities for young stars to display their talent in the view of NL club talent scouts.

The close relationship between the VCFL and the Victorian Football Development Foundation, in particular with the ten Country Development Officers, has proved the original concerns of the VCFL that the removal of zoning would destroy junior development as unfounded.

There is no more compelling argument that country football programs provide the best opportunities to play in the AFL than the fact, that since 1986 more than 50 per cent of all drafted players to the AFL competition have come directly from VCFL clubs.

The VCFL programs commence with the State Under 15 Schoolboys Championship which is conducted in association with the Victorian Secondary Schools Association and the Victorian Football Development Foundation.

The highly prestigious Under 17 campaign which includes development squads, regional camps and the Caltex Under 17 Championship provides now what will become the major recruiting program for AFL clubs.

It is the Under 17 age group that AFLclubs will target in their recruiting drives.

The highlight of the Under 17 program is the selection of the VCFL Teal Cup Squad. Under the highly skilled coaching of Ray Jordon, who is acknowledged as one of the country's best junior coaches, these thirty selected players undergo an intensive training program which culminates in their participation at the National Teal Cup Championship.

For the players who are not selected by AFL clubs at the Under 17 level, the opportunity presents itself again with the Shell Under 18 Series conducted on an annual basis at VFL Park.

Referred to by some as footballs equivalent to the thoroughbred "the yearling sales", the Shell Series provides country footballers with a great opportunity to display their skills immediately prior to the National Recruit Draft.

In addition, the "Vic Health" Under 19 Series played between the VCFL, VFA, VMFL and VAFA, in which the VCFL remains undefeated, enables players who miss

I Results of last Saturday

suggest 1991 could be a most interesting one for both Division One and Division Two competitions. Round 1 w B L For Ag % Pis

The unfurling of the 1990 Premiership Pennant was

. not incentive enough for reigning ·premiers, M angoplah-Cool<ardinia United, who went down to the Gerald Pieper coached

Marrar combination and in so doing lost their first game · ' at Mangoplah since very early 1989.

Ariah Park·Mirool /made an auspicious debut to Farrer League winning handsomely over The 'Rock

So, after Round One; three of iast year's finalists are in the bottom four1 -~

; Division Twos openjhg results were also indicative of _J· a most interesting secfson. Like MCU in Division One,

Division Twos reigning premiers, South Wagga-Tolland ,: also went down in their first match More significantly ' was the fact that they were beaten by RAAF a side

which has not enjoyed much success in recent years.

Newly-formed Whitton-Yanco celebrqted the return, after a long absence, of football to Yanco with a nailbiting win over Uranquinty-Kapooka, whilst last year's runner up, Cootamundra, was pushed to the limitby the Rivcoll Bushpigs. The Division Two results of Round One were a far cry from some of the landslide victories of last year and argues well for the 1991 competition. • · . · · . · .

Today sees a round- highlighted by the meeting uf traditional Farrer League rivals, CollingulliesAshmont and _MCU at Collingullie and the unfurling of 1990 Premiership Pennants won by South · Wagga-Tolland Seniors and Reserves prior to their games against Whitton-Yanco a( Robertson Oval, Wagga.

■ !\~~~~~;l!!§l~f l~ti1lq~1 BLACK, RED sAsH the ground, like Stewie's hamburger and

the forwards who were straighter than Rocky on a footy bus trip, speaking of Rock congratulations on your engagement to Merryll.

Awards went to: Knobberthe mug, Richie the meal for two and Adrian (excuse me sir your fist is in my eye) Hamilton came away with the socks.

The Twos went down but played well. Ginger Bennett was this clubs first offer to the sin bin but carried his place with dignity. The boys tried hard but were a bit casual in places which cost them the match. Awards: Stewie Moore - the pewter, Haydn Smith - the stubbies and Jamie Corbett the socks.

Even though the under 18s were well beaten they all tried hard. Awards here went to: Paul Byrnes and Jamie Grentall.

It's high time a few more supporters turned up to watch these boys, c'mon let's give them some encouragement, they are, after all, the future of our club.

I hope Mango have the water on next time, as our runners had to go to the pub to collect it and were decidedly wobbly by the end of the day due to a very slow tap at the hotel.

The netballers had a great start to the year as well with A grade winning 36-15 Annette Patterson the mug and Maria Armstrong the 2nd award. B grade flogged Mango 65-5 Robyn (shorty) Dallas got the mug and Allison Hamilton the encouragement award. The juniors unfortunately were beaten but have improved greatly. Veronica Deighton was the player of the day and Kelly Pattison got the encouragement award.

For the first time the mighty midgets appeared, these girls are all under 1 Os and even though they were defeated they are all to be congratulated on a good game. Jaqueline Murphy definitely is her parents child winning the best player in defence and Robyn Gillett won the encouragement award.

The netballers are holding a lotto No. draw each week. See the girls for more information; this weeks winner is ....

Up coming events include Grant Lurhs at the Marrar Hotel on June 2, more information on that later.

Well footy fans and Roos supporters, the long boring off season has come to a close for us and I wish to welcome all new, old and possible players, their wives, girlfriends, families and our valued supporters and sponsors to the '91 season.

Once again we thank Bill and Jackie Collins from the Terminas Hotel for being our major sponsor.

STRIPES

For the second season we have Jim Prentice for Senior Coach, Gary "Crow" Harding for Reserves and Kerry "Gator" Wallace for U1 Bs Coach.

New faces among our Senior players are Brian Mitchell (Narrandera), Scott Morphett (Hillston), Ray Block (Cootamundra), Philip Comp, and great to see James Durham and wes Heirjus back from injury.

Pleasing to see an excess of U 18 players for trial games and training. Several of these players will be regular seniors and others will be pushing for selection in that grade.

A casual observation at the netball camp has revealed that the girls will be even more glamorous and skilled than last year and we wish them all the best for their season.

Today we face our near neighbours at Marrar and ~re assured of tough games. So let's come away with some wins for a good start to the season.

COLLINGULLIE-ASHMONT DEMONS A day of mixed fortunes for the Gullie

~ at Ardlethan with the footballers up and the netballers down.

In the netball the Bs staged a sensational fightback after being on the ropes at half-time to go down by the

. . barest possible margin. The mug was •eo. WHITE v won by Karen McPherson (nee McPher-

son) and the encouragement by Karen Jolliffe. Tho, As were well beaten with the Car Radio and Hi Fi mug to Fiona Jenkins and the encouragement to Michelle Williams.

The 18s got off Ori the right foot to record a good win against the Dons. Tangles Shipway played a great game to grab the trophy. Sean Watkins bored in all day to get the $1 o petrol, Kamahl Leonard (minus hat) got the $1 0 and Ray Smith shagged the socks.

In a game highlighted by Red's controversial send-off, the Mangos won comfortably. The mug went to Nick Jenkins after controlling his wing a.II game. Ian "Eddy" Moleworth showed he will be a handy acquisition to win the club award, and others to shine were Captain Cock Hesta, Richter Siebels and the balding veteran Wocka Price.

The Ones started off in fine fashion to get a handy lead at the first break, before going to sleep for a quarter and letting the stars right back into the game. -"'fter a well ~eserved blast from coach lays, they 901 right on with job in the second half to record a convincing victory. Slug Washington covered plenty of ground to get the mug. Jason Wild had a brilliant debut to grab the encouragement award, and Spike Hines created plenty of opportunities tor the forwards to pocket the $20. Other good players in an even team display were Paul Piercy and Crackle Whyman around the packs, Cat Alexander dominatetl the rucks and Harry McMillan showed a coof head in defence.

This week the old foe in Mango who we haven't beaten for a number of seasons. A 100% effort is required

The long trip to Barellan last week resulted in mixed success. The First grade had a battle on their hands and had to come from behind at three quarter time to record an inspiring win. A couple of players suffered injuries and we hope they recover quickly.

Saint of the Week went to Brendan Nielson for a tireless effort, Black Swan

Award to Scott Absolum, AJ Watson Award to Peter Noack and the Tollan Hotel Encouragement Award to Gary Crouch for refusing to stay down and out.

The Second game had a loss to a more experienced side, but they can only get better as it was the first time they had played as a unit. Saint of the Week was won by Darren Urquhart for a solid game on the backline, Island View to Jason Kerr and the North Wagga Ampol to Scott Robertson.

Today sees the first game of the U 18s for a few years and hopefully they will produce future talent for us.

Coming events on the social calendar are a talent night in May, the Annual Ball in June. Other events will be organised and everyone will be informed.

The Supporter's Club is running again this year so anyone who wants a ticket see any committee person as there are only 150 tickets for a chance of a good prize.

Today we take on Ardlethan who should not be taken lightly. With a dedicated effort we should come away with three wins.

but a lapse in discipline and concentra-tion saw Collingullie run away with the game in the 2nd quarter. Votegetters in the Bowling Club award were Craig Saunderson, Eric McDermott, Andrew Hanrahan, Dennis Carroll and Paul Werner. Congratulations to Paul Werner for being named vice-captain this year. The CRT team value award went to Craig Saunderson, Chris Richards won the Ladies Auxiliary award and Rodney "Rocket" Clark won the Palace Hotel Play of the Day Award. Bruce Boyton put in a blinder (without his tennis racquet) and won the dreaded mug.

The First graders were right in the game at half-time, but the loss of Dangerous (knee), Kenny Fairman (ankle), and Matty Currie (nose) meant the side was undermanned in the second half. Collingullie kicked on after half-time and went on to win easily. Votegetters in the Rod McDermott award were Keane Welles, Stewart Litchfield, Paul McCarty, Wayne Fowles and Glen Carroll. Stewie cleaned up by winning the CRT Team Value award and the Chinese meal. Keane Wells won the London Award. Mark Derksen put in a solid game and won the mug (and a number of teenage idolisers that night).

The netballers never gave me any news, but from what I heard, at least one of their teams recorded a win. Good luck for the year girls.

Once again a reminder that there is a Casserole Tea night on May 4 (after The Rock at home) and another on July 20 (after Ariah Park at home). Tickets for the 200 club are still on sale from all committee members.

THE ROCK-YERONG CREEK MAGPIES

m They say that one hot day doesn't

make a summer and after last week I certainly hope that they're right. Admittadely we were understaffed bu there was a certain lack of commitment which if we are to be successful must be instilled back into us. Still there were

BLA~Mpr;mE some good performances. Barney Fellows unfortunately was in plenty of

the play and he won the Magpie of the Week. Coach Col led by example and his gutsy effort won him

the Sandman Mug. Nick grabbed his chance at First grade with both hands and is sure to be there for a while now. he deservedly won the Riverina Spraying Service Towel.

The Reserves with what they had battled it out to the end. It is hoped that a few more "newcomers" will grace the track and save the coach making numerous phone calls on Friday nights. Mark Yates return from a years spell in the saddling paddock was greeted with the Fergusons Butchery Magpie of the Week. The youngest in the side, Geoff Hopkins was a late inclusion and really deserve the Porky and Vendor Award. Two more youngsters were in the Awards namely Matt Black and Andrew Doherty and they received $1 O each from the Ladies Auxiliary.

Last night we had the Leigh Matthews Dinner and I hope that everyone supported it and made it a success that it so justly deserved.

Don't foget to get your memberships today because if you are unflnancial you are ineligible for insurance claims. At $25 for players, ladies and gents represents great so support your local club.

the previous opportunities to again display talent and convince AFL clubs of their individual talent and potential to play AFL football.

It is not only the junior programs where the VCFL excels but its senior lnterleague series, the Vic Health Country Football Championships and the selection of the VCFL Senior Representative Team also provide further opportunities for players who, for one reason or another, have not been selected in junior programs to be selected by AFL clubs at the senior level.

In 1991 theVCFLSeniorTeam will travel to Adelaide where it will play against the South Australian Country Football League in the curtain raiser match to the Senior State of Origin game between Victoria and South Australia and which will no doubt be watched very closely by every AFL club.

These programs have stood the test of time and have and will continue to provide excellent opportunities for VCFL players to make a career in AFL football.

TIGERS Club Notes

Watchout! Someone has left the cage door open and released some fierce Tigers. Not being used to the wide open spaces of their new hunting ground it took the Tigers a while to find their feet. It was a hard struggle all day with the Rosellas in front until the final seconds when a great mark and goal by C.C. Michael Wright gave us a fairytale beginning to the season.

A great team effort and a never say die attitude exemplified by a B.O. G. performance by Anthony Wakeman with strong support from Phill "the tatties" Ryan, Peter McCormick, "Tiny" Keith McBean and new "Squashy" lookalike Errol Boots kept us in the game. Special mention to Tommy "Newlywed" Elwin, Woody Longford, Roger Demamiel, James Fell and David Boots for top performances.

(Not supplied) won the AMP Insurance award donated by Greg Eckley and the Mug went to Phil Ryan.

This stewart tongs coached reserves put up a gallant effort, considering it was their first hit out as a team and with many having not played the game before it was a pleasing result. Rugby League convert Rocky Emerson showed that if you are dedicated and willing to listen and learn you can do anything you want - top game Rocky. Brutus Thompson showed that while still on stud duties he is capable of performing on the field with 5 magic goals - there are rumours that he has a groin injury- but no-one knows if it happened before, during or after the game. Others to play well were Billy Bevan, Mussy Gordon, Christian Woods, Scott Young, Jed Cutter and ex-Hawthorn man Damien Harris.

The Red Kelly Award was shared by Blue Grieves and Christian Wood with Rocky winning the Mug.

Congratulations to Mussy and Katrina on the birth of a new centre half forward, also Robbie and Annie on the birth of their daughter.

On behalf of all players and supporters I wish Craig Howe a speedy recovery and hope to see him up and about soon.

Today we take on South Wagga, in what should be a great clash in both grades.

ROSf 11 AS Club Notes

One out of two was not quite the desired result of the Rosellas debut at Yanco Oval last Saturday against the Whitton-Yanco Tigers.

The Twos win was its first since 1989. Teamwork, together with a few tactical moves by coach Coco and inspirational performances by a couple of players making their return games with the club, combined to give the Rosellas a confidence building victory.

Craig Byrnes, one of the players making his reappearance with the club, completely dominated the half-forward line to deservedly win the Rosella of the Day Mug, while Al 'Bomber' Farrell.another player making his comeback, played a fine game around the flanks to claim the Courage Mug. Not a bad effort, but a lot of hard work yet before the finals.

The Firsts lost an entertaining, but ultimately disappointing game (result wise) to a determined Tigers outfit with the last scoring kick of the day.

To be honest, our teamwork wasn't good, our communication between players was almost non-existent while too many players made basic mistakes with their ball skills. Fair enough, we only lost by 2 points, but a loss is a loss which makes the rest of the season just a bit harder. On the plus side, when everything came together it not only looked good, but it was also very effective.

Centreman Darren McDonald played consistently well all day to win the R.O.D. pewter, while ruckman Chris Sutton, who initiated most of our attacks from the centre bounce, won the Courage Mug.

Coming Events: Saturday, June 15 (general bye) Monster Market behind pub commencing 10.30am. Get your memberships from Carol now and save on home game admission prices.

On a final note thanks to Rob and Sally Grentell for the blazers - they look absolutely brilliant.

DONS Club Notes

Perhaps it's best not to say too much about last week's opening round. However it would be remiss not to congratulate our opponents of all three grades -Collingullie-Ashmont in the U 18s and RAAF in the Ones and Twos - on fine performances, even though our Twos were winners!

The U 1 8s were let down a little with the failure of some players to turn up, but that aside, our performance was perhaps not as good as we would have hoped.

Nevertheless, as the game progressed our efforts increased and it was, indeed, a heartening finish to the game.

Award winners for the U18s were Michael Hood (Man of the Match cash), Martin Loy (Video Ezy award) and Anthony Hood (Huthwaite's Turvey Tops car wash). Congratulations are extended to Anthony on being selected for futher Teal Cup Trials. Unfortunately we'll be without him today because of it but we hope you do well, Hoody! Neil Morton and Shane Spears were other newcomers to show good form.

The Twos had a bit of a lapse in the third term but finished on full of running. Chris Reidlinger (Man of the Match mug), Jimmy Creek (Video Ezy) and Jason Carroll (Car Wash) were the award winners. Paul 'Ezza' Errington and Noel Busby did well as usual as did newcomers Pat Murphy and Wayne Klimpsch.

Paul Williams had a big game in the Ones and was a deserved Man of the Match mug winner. 'Pencil' Robinson won the Video Ezy award and Neil Carey the Car

Wash. It's back to basics for the Seniors this week, remembering that good performances are only brought about by UNITED effort.

As last week's column was hastily written in the early hours of one morning there was a glaring omission.

A most hearty welcome is extended to our new 'strapper', Letitia Connellan, who'll certainly make Larry's task a lot easier. Hope you enjoy a long stay with us Letitia!

Today it's U18s at McPherson Oval to play North Wagga and hopefully inspired displays from our Ones and Twos against Whitton-Yanco following the hoisting of our Premiership Pennants.
