How To Measure
How To Emphasize or De-emphasize
● Horizontal lines can visually widen an area● Pay attention to your shirt hem line● Thin horizontal stripes can have a slimming
effect● Pay attention to the stripes on a dress or skirt
The Horizontal Line
● Diagonal lines can direct the eye ● They can visually narrow or widen an area● Pay attention to the direction of the lines
around your shoulders and hips● Diagonal lines can also create triangles that
point to an area
The Diagonal Line
● Embellishments direct your eye to the item of interest and away from other areas of your body
● Statement necklaces and bright scarves pull the eye up and detract from the lower half
● Large sparkly back pockets on jeans will draw the eye to the bottom and enlarge the bottom
● Ruffles will add volume to that area
Embellishments
● Dark colors recede. Wear dark colors to visually reduce an area
● Light and bright colors attract the eye and expand.

Q & A
I just need a bit of guidance in getting started in becoming a pure summer. It is now fall and I'm wanting to change from my white purse which I have carried all summer to a handbag in the pure summer color. Remembering that I live in Florida, what color would
you feel would be good to go with everything for me to buy? ( lt or dark taupe, lt or dark grey or something else?) Then what would be a good beginning color for pants for casual wear here in The Villages to start my new wardrobe.
I have a question about color contrast. I was recently determined to be a Toned Winter - thank you Jen! - and according to the information, my outfits should be medium contrast. Would this be only Triad combinations, or could I do Complementary and Split Complementary if the contrasting colors were less than
20%?
In addition, as a Toned Winter I can wear both silver and gold jewelry. What would determine when I would wear what - i.e., silver with lighter colors, gold with darker, or vise versa?!
How do take the colors from my color fan and have them correspond to the color wheel or do I?
