Learning garden a great classroom for students IN BLOOR WEST May. 21, 2004 ANNE KYNE Give a man a fish; you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for life. Sound familiar? We've all heard this old saying before and there's no denying its basic wisdom. Generally speaking, people learn and retain information best when they are actively involved in the education process.

The students at James Culnan Catholic School have been testing this theory throughout the spring as they head outdoors to work on their "learning garden" in the schoolyard.

Through the support of TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, students spend part of the day planting a variety of native flowers, mulching, and tidying up the garden.

Some of the Grade 8 kids recently extended their cleaning efforts and delighted nearby residents by picking up garbage and recyclable items in the area surrounding the school.

It's a strange blend of control and chaos as students travel back and forth across the school grounds, shovels and hoes in hand, pushing wheel barrels. Talk about back to basics teaching, but the kids seem to love it. And they're so good at it! Every student out there seems to focus and take pride in what they're doing.

By participating in the construction and maintenance of the garden, the children learn so much about the earth, how fragile it is, and how everything exists in a delicate balance. An essential lesson, especially these days.

The continued planting and cleaning is part of a school yard restoration initiative that has been under way at James Culnan for two years now.

According to Greening Committee Project Co-ordinator, Elizabeth Levstek, pupils have always been intrinsically involved in the project. "The students have taken a fundamental role from the start. They've been involved in the early planning stages and continue to be a part of the development and maintenance of the garden."

Grass, flowers and trees topped the list of the things most wanted in the schoolyard when the greening committee first surveyed students back in 2002.

Surrounded by concrete, and with little shade, the children longed for "a quiet place to sit". This began the transition of a small strip of land in the north-east corner of the schoolyard, dubbed the "mudpit" into what is now known as the "Garden of Life".

The name was thought up by a Grade 6 student and voted on by the whole school. It is here that the students get to experience "life" first hand as they watch the garden grow, and discover how crucial care and maintenance is. When plants are destroyed either on purpose or through over zealous play in the garden, students learn how to start all over again. It's not easy maintaining a garden. It takes patience, commitment and persistence, but the rewards are plentiful. Perhaps this is why Culnan is just one of several local schools trying to enhance our children's school experience by combining interactive education with environmental awareness.

Chaminade speedster staves off leg injury to win 400-metre title Sprinter pursues All-Ontario crown `I'm all right; I'll get some therapy'

Toronto Star, May 18, 2004 DAVID GROSSMAN SPORTS REPORTER Chaminade College track and field coach Andre Metivier had a big decision to make yesterday concerning his top sprinter. Marquee speedster Ritchie Harding was unable to compete the past week and a half due to an aggravating hamstring injury.

The veteran track coach had to assess if he was taking a chance by letting his graduating athlete run the 400 metres in the opening day of the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association track and field meet at Etobicoke's Centennial Stadium.

Harding, the Chaminade track MVP and former athlete of the year, had been very cautious in his recent workouts, but he assured his coach he was ready for the race yesterday.

A former provincial bronze medallist as a junior, Harding was eager to qualify for next week's Metro Regional finals. His ultimate goal is to win a gold medal at the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association meet June 3 to 5 in Etobicoke, and in a time that might earn him a scholarship to a United States college or university.

After a shaky start, and a so-so opening 100 metres, Harding steadily improved to win the 400 race handily in a time of 50.27 seconds.

"Sure I was worried," said Metivier, who was pacing the infield. "As a teacher and coach, there is more to this than winning a race. Any time you see a kid work so hard, you care about him. I didn't want to see (Harding) get hurt again. I told him before the race to let his body be his guide, to back off if there was any pain and stop if he had to."

But Harding, who said he had a micro muscle tear in his right leg, didn't let up. "I wanted to run and hope for the best," he said, lightly clutching his leg after the race. "Re-injuring the leg was on my mind, so I took it easy at the start but I'm all right and I'll get some therapy. I'm not the kind of guy who would tell my coach that I was fine, when I wasn't."

In his first outdoor race of the year last month, Harding was clocked in 49.8 seconds at the Rowland Memorial Games. The 5-foot-9 honours student injured his leg 10 days ago on a relay exchange while training at Chaminade. Metivier will have to make another decision today on whether Harding is capable of competing in the 200 metres and with the Gryphons' 4x400-metre relay squad.

Other members of the team — from a school of less than 750 students — piled up gold medals, too. Oseme Adadu won the midget boys 100 metres in 11.8 seconds while Mark Silvestre took first place in the junior boys' 1,500 metres, clocked in four minutes, 28.83 seconds. In the senior boys' 110-metre hurdles, Marcus Constantine grabbed top spot with a time of 15.79 seconds.

Battiston powers past competitors Teen overcomes schedule glitch to win two golds `It was quite hectic for a while,' says TDCAA champion

DAVID GROSSMAN SPORTS REPORTER If Alana Battiston had the jitters during the junior girls 300-metre hurdles at the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association meet yesterday, she didn't show it.

Battiston, a 16-year-old student at Michael Power/St. Joseph, raced across the finish line in 48.88 seconds, seven-hundredths of a second ahead of her cousin, Amara Kremblewski of De La Salle.

She then grabbed her gold medal and hustled across the Etobicoke Centennial Stadium field to compete in the high jump, which was scheduled to start at the same time as her race.

"It was quite hectic for a while, focusing on one race and wondering if I'd get through it without losing my spot in the high jump," said Battiston, who is suffering from shin splints. She needn't have worried about the high jump. Not only did she make it on time, she won with a leap of 1.45 metres. "I was quite surprised at what I did in the hurdles but wasn't happy with my jump. I've done better, but maybe it was because I kept thinking of the injury to my head and was just tired from rushing back and forth," said Battiston, who needed stitches in her head after hitting the bar during high jump practice a year ago.

Battiston wasn't ready to call it a day. She claimed her third award of the day, this time a silver medal, helping her 4x400-metre squad to a second-place finish behind the provincial powerhouse team from Mary Ward, which won by 12 seconds.

Michael Power/St. Joseph coach Eddie Raposo praised his young charge's efforts in the hurdles, but suggested it's the high jump event in which she'll eventually excel. "Ultimately, she'll be a great high jumper because I don't think she has enough speed for the track," said Raposo. "She attacked the hurdles like someone who has been doing it for a while but it's gruelling physically and mentally competing in two events at the same time," Raposo added.

Gary Lubin, who coaches Battiston in the high jump at the Mississauga Track Club, was happy with her gold, but said she could go even higher. Battiston, who appeared to hesitate before clearing the bar, was a little gun-shy because of the injury she suffered last year, Lubin suggested. ``I've seen her jump much better. Her technique is solid but the injury definitely affected her,'' said Lubin, who coached Olympic high jumper Mark Boswell when he won a world junior title in 1996.

Lubin thinks the 5-foot-10 Battiston might be even better at hurdling. "She's got the long legs for hurdling and, with good training, might very well surprise a lot of people," said Lubin.

The only other female to win two individual events yesterday was nationally-ranked Mary Ward distance runner Mandy McBean. She won the senior 800 metres in two minutes, 21.48 seconds and a gold medal in the 3,000 metres with a time of 10:30.59, 52 seconds quicker than runner-up Natalie Desimini.

Alana Battiston shows off her gold medal form as she clears the bar at 1.45 metres in the junior girls high jump at the TDCAA championships in Etobicoke yesterday

Rosary Apostolate in the Schools visit St. Rene Goupil School

On Thursday, May 13 a group of grade 2 and 3 students reenacted the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego. Juan was on his way to the Church of Santiago in Mexico City when Our Lady appeared to him and asked him to go to the Bishop and tell him that She wanted a church built on Tepeyac Hill. The play was organized by The Rosary Apostolate in the Schools. This organization visits the school every month to pray the Rosary with the students from J. K. to Grade 8.

At the end of the play the staff and students prayed the Rosary. This was followed by the Crowning of Mary.

HANDWASHING: THE KEY TO

INFECTION CONTROL

Most people do not wash their hands as often as they should. The best defense against the spread of infection is good hand washing with soap and water. Remember to lather and scrub your hands for at least 15 seconds. Make sure you pay close attention to areas between your fingers and under your fingernails. Rinse your hands with running water and dry.

The best line of defense for anyone is washing your hands WELL.
