AIA Colorado Design AwardsInformational Session
“The Do’s and Don’ts from an Experienced Award Submitter”By: Nicole C. Marshall, MBA
Do’s
• Do tell a story about your project, not just the facts and figures. Make sure to narrate how the project’s design approach solved a problem or a challenge – site conditions, budget, conflicting uses, etc.
• Do include sketches, inspiration images, concept fundamentals, then lead into the resulting project. Beautiful pictures of a building alone won’t be memorable. A beautiful idea that turned into a beautiful result will resonate much better.
Do’s• Do include diagrams that explain a concept along side a finished
image. And make time to make these by not preparing your submission at the last minute.
• Do invest in professional photography. Project photography is the most important marketing and business development investment a firm makes, and can make or break an award entry.
• Do include big, full bleed images for your best photos.
• Do include captions that can help describe a concept diagram or a concept within an image.
Don’ts
• Don’t include too long of a narrative. If there is a lot to say about a project, try to break that text up into digestible bites with one bigger opener followed by smaller statements inserted along the way.
• Don’t forget that these are “design” awards. They are not project success awards, or budget management awards, or technical detail awards. If you didn’t have a creative concept, a design idea, a design strategy that drove the project, then it likely won’t win.
Don’ts
• Don’t forget to curate your own work. Sure you have 20 images that show all of the spaces in a project, but does that mean you should include them all? No. Be critical not exhaustive.
• Don’t hesitate to ask the AIA questions. If you’re concerned about a formatting restriction, or a deadline logistic, just give them a call. So many people wait and hope it works out, but after the submission deadline is too late to find out you did something wrong.
Don’ts
• Don’t forget to promote your awards after you win them, especially to the project owners and partners! Congratulate all involved in making your design vision a reality.
• Don’t just hang the award on the wall after that. Also share the news with your current & past clients, with the press, with your social media followers, and with your own staff. Shout about these design awards from the rooftop as these awards provide a great, timely excuse to remind your network why you’re a firm worth hiring, worth referring, or worth working for.
