For 2017, we have identified another key competency we believe will complement the boldness and

individuality that we are instilling in the younger generation – Future Forward Thinking. It is not enough

that we are bold, or are able to design environmentally sustainable buildings, but we also need to possess

a future-forward thinking that will help us to envision the lifestyles and environments of tomorrow,

ultimately shaping the designs we pen down today. Thus, the theme You For Tomorrow. Tomorrow is

moulded by visionaries of today, structures and spaces that we design today are expected to transcend

seasons, and stand the test of time. So, how would you mould tomorrow?

Yaw Seng Heng Group Managing Director

Nippon Paint Malaysia Group

To all young designers

out there,

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you for taking the difficult first step

in leaving your mark in the Asian design scene. For the past 10 years, Asia Young

Designer Award (AYDA) has been taking young talents like you out of your classroom

and into the deep end, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you will be proud to talk about

for many years to come.

But this experience is no stroll in the park; our past winners and alumni can testify that AYDA takes young

designers out of their comfort zone, demands commitment, and challenges all that young designers have

learnt in the classroom. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017, AYDA was birthed in 2008 as a commitment

to nurture and develop the creative minds of the next generation. It has since expanded to be an award with a

presence in 15 countries across Asia. Walking through the halls of AYDA, we see AYDA as a platform for budding

designers from across Asia to cross-learn with industry experts who are excited to share their thoughts and

experiences. We will also see iron being sharpened by iron as participants go through gruelling judging sessions,

putting both their technical knowledge and interpersonal communication skills to the test.

In previous years, the Award placed emphasis on aspects such as community centricity and environmental

sustainability. Progressing with the industry, we acknowledge that such themes and design aspects have matured

and become an inherent component of any given structure. Thus, for 2016, we took on a change to focus on key

competencies that would elevate the standards of design. With that, we launched Be Bold. Be Free. Be You.

for AYDA 2016 that promoted individuality and boldness which helped the designers to push beyond

their existing design paradigms.

For 2017, we have identified another key competency we believe will complement the boldness and

individuality that we are instilling in the younger generation – Future Forward Thinking. It is not enough

that we are bold, or are able to design environmentally sustainable buildings, but we also need to

possess a future-forward thinking that will help us to envision the lifestyles and environments of

tomorrow, ultimately shaping the designs we pen down today. Thus, the theme You For Tomorrow.

Tomorrow is moulded by visionaries of today, structures and spaces that we design today are

expected to transcend seasons, and stand the test of time. So, how would you mould tomorrow?

I welcome you to join me on a journey equipped with

your passion, foresight and technical capabilities

as we create design concepts that are relevant,

meaningful and most importantly, meeting the

needs of tomorrow’s dwellers and society.

In a forward-looking and

advancing society, it is critical that

we anticipate our needs of

tomorrow

themselves in the social, economic and environmental context of the future dwellersin its entirety. Each time and space has its own wonders and great structures to capture those moments from its conceptualisation stage, as envisioned by the designer. We also need to be cognisant that whilst creating purposeful ‘brick-and-mortar’ designs, we should always be reminded to incorporate and subsequently build the ‘heart-and-soul’ elements into the project intent.

YOU FOR TOMORROW: FUTURE LIVING,

AS ENVISIONED TODAY.

YOURMISSION

Overview Of Asia Young Designer Award 2017

The needs of each individual dweller, the needs of the specific community and the needs of the society as a whole – how do we envision the living of tomorrow? How would one, as a visionary designer, craft the structure and space that would meet the needs of tomorrow? And how would the design be resilient through the years? By ‘future proofing’, we can predict the way we live, work, play and interact with the environment in the coming years. Thus, it is paramount for designers to take into consideration and fully immerse

In its 10th instalment, the Asia Young Designer Award pays homage to the term ‘future-proof designs’ through its theme – You for Tomorrow. The theme aims to challenge the foresight and technical ability of today’s designers to create a design concept that is relevant and meaningful, and meets the needs of tomorrow’s dwellers and societies. Merit is given to those whose designs transcend the trends of today and stand the test of relevance of the future.

Every design submission will be carefully considered by our selected panel of judges. If you’re ready to unleash your ideas and design something great, turn the page for more details needed for your journey towards the extraordinary.
