You are cordially invited to the 2014 “Base-balls and Bow Ties” Installation Gala and ca-sino night on Saturday, September 20, 2014! Please join us for a special evening at the Grand Hyatt as we raise funds for the award-winning Community Justice Program (CJP) — and cel-ebrate the San Antonio legal community.
The evening will include sumptuous food and beverage offerings, live music by our very own Court Jesters band and a variety of casino games including roulette, blackjack, craps and Texas hold ‘em! Try your luck at a casino table to accumulate chances to win some fabulous prizes!
What could be better than a night out of dinner, dancing and casino games? How about a night out of dinner and dancing for a great cause. 100 percent of the proceeds raised at this event will be donated to the Community Justice Program. The CJP provides vital legal assistance to families, veterans, and the indigent through localized neighborhood-based clinics staffed by judges, attorneys, district clerks, paralegals, and law students. Just last year, CJP volunteers do-nated over $1,000,000 in time to our community.
We must ensure that all San Antonians have access to justice in our city and in our courthouse. Help us make a difference today by signing up as a sponsor. Gala sponsorships are available at the following levels:

“No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.”
— Calvin Coolidge
This year’s Installation Gala, “Base-balls and Bow Ties,” is right around the corner, and once again, the San Antonio Bar Association has committed to passing 100 percent of the proceeds to our award winning pro bono program, the Community Justice Program (CJP). Our San Antonio Lawyers were recently recognized for their pro bono contributions on state and national-wide levels. Thanks to the leadership and vision of Phylis Speedlin, Judges Karen Pozza, Sandee Bryan Marion, Larry Noll and Lisa Jarrett, we have matched over 7,000 pro bono cases with volunteer attorneys over the past 12 years. We now average 30 clinics a year under the able assistance of Suzanne DeWalt, Amanda Reimher Buckert and Ann Zaragoza. Let’s show our support to this wonderful program by coming out to the Grand Hyatt on September 20, 2014 for a fun-filled evening of casino games, prizes, gourmet food and music by the Court Jesters!
I was impressed and proud of our profession last month, when a free seminar about the Undocumented Children’s crisis at our border was sponsored by the Mexican American Bar Association, under the
direction of Jaime Vasquez (Chamberlain Hrdicka), Andres Perez (Perez & Malik) and the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), hosted by Cox Smith Matthews Incorporated. The Most Reverend Gustoavo-Siller, Archbishop of San Antonio, said it best at his opening remarks “IT’S COMPLICATED.” Over 100 attorneys showed up to learn more about the problem and to get involved in providing due process legal services to these kids who are fleeing their countries in Central America for a variety of reasons. We were asked to refrain from falling prey to any political agenda while at the same time dismissing an attitude of “contempt prior to investigation” due to the individual plight and stories of the nearly 60,000 children.
The San Antonio Bar Association facilitates growth and professional dev-elopment through 12 independent sections of the Bar Association:
Alternative Dispute Resolution SectionAppellate Practice SectionConstruction Law SectionConsumer & Commercial Law SectionElder Law SectionEnvironmental Law SectionFamily Law SectionImmigration & Nationality Law SectionInternational Law SectionLitigation Law SectionNatural Resources SectionReal Estate Section
Each section is organized and governed by its own members. Each section holds regularly scheduled meetings, usually on a monthly basis with guest speakers. Section members are provided an opportunity to network and obtain continuing legal education relevant to their area of interest. This year, we hope to expand SABA’s offerings by adding a Social Security Section as well as a Paralegal divison of the San Antonio Bar Association.
SABA also has 20 committees that offer tremendous opportunities for growth — from the SABA Technology committee (free Courthouse Wi-Fi and WestLaw), the County Courts and District Courts committees to the Unauthorized Practice of Law committee, with a wide variety of specialties in between. There is truly something here for everyone. If you’re not already a part of one or more sections or committess, do yourself a favor and get involved!
Some of you are also active in one or more local bar associations, be it the San Antonio Bar, the Mexican American Bar, the San Antonio Black Lawyers, the San Antonio Criminal Defense Lawyers, the San Antonio Family Lawyers, the Association of Corporate Counsel, the local Federal Bar, the San Antonio Young Lawyers, or the San Antonio Trial Lawyers. Remember: Life is not a matter of counting the years; it is a matter of making the years count!

Thank you July and August CJP Volunteers!
September CJP Volunteer of the month
Each month, the CJP is honored to recognize a volunteer(s) or an organization that has gone above and beyond or done an exceptional job with the CJP. The 2014 September CJP Volunteers of the Month are the San Antonio Bar Auxiliary members. Each month, members of the Auxiliary provide the most de-licious homemade treats for the many volunteers that attend the CJP’s Family Law Clinics. Coordinated by Auxiliary member, Jere Lee, the desserts provided are always incredibly delicious and greatly appreciated by all. If you want to sample some of the most scrump-tious sweet treats in town, then I suggest you volun-teer at a CJP Family Law clinic! We are most fortunate to have the support of the San Antonio Bar Auxiliary and continue to look forward to the wonderful home-made confections that are provided each month.
September Volunteer mentor of the month
Each month the CJP recog-nizes a mentor that volunteers their time and expertise at the CJP’s pro bono legal clinics. The September 2014 Volunteer Men-tor of the Month is mark Unger. A great friend of the CJP and the San Antonio Bar Association, Mark has been practicing family for more than 18 years. A family law attorney and mediator, Mark has been mentoring at the CJP clinics since 2004. Mark’s vast legal knowledge has been ap-preciated by many volunteer attorneys over the years. Mark is also an advocate for integrating technology and has been extremely helpful in helping the pro-gram incorporate eFiling into its Family Law clinics. We appreciate Mark’s continued commitment to and support of the program and thank him for the many hours of service that he has provided over the years.
Pat Barsalou and Valarie Miller from the Texas Attor-ney general’s HEROES Project, attended the August Veterans Clinic to assist low-income veterans.

The Assisted Pro Bono Program will provide legal assistance to pro bono attorneys in Texas who are assisting clients who are living at or below 150 percent of the fed-eral poverty level in family law matters, with a special emphasis on cases involving family vio-lence, sexual assault, teen dating violence, or stalking. Any attorney licensed to practice in Texas who agrees to take a family law case pro bono for a party with an annual income at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level may call the Assisted Pro Bono Ho-tline at 1.866.598.4277 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. monday through Friday to speak with a family law practitioner for assistance in handling the pro bono case. On September 25 the San Antonio Bar Association is excited to welcome David B. Roosevelt, grandson of Eleanor Roosevelt to our monthly luncheon!
David B. Roo-sevelt is the author of Grandmère: A Per-sonal History of Eleanor Roosevelt. Until her death when he was 20, David B Roos-evelt enjoyed a close relationship with his Grandmere, Eleanor Roosevelt. Although she was admired by millions around the world, few people knew her as her loved ones did. Now David shares personal family stories and photographs that show Eleanor as she really was: passionate, vul-nerable, courageous, and determined to live her private life according to the hu-manitarian ideals she cherished. From her unhappy, sheltered childhood to the powerful partnership forged by her mar-riage to President Franklin Delano Roo-sevelt, to her remarkable achievements as champion of human rights, this blend of fond remembrance and impeccable research offers a rare, intimate glimpse into the life of a fascinating woman whose legacy continues today. David’s book is available on Amazon at bit.ly/davidroosevelt.
The September luncheon will take place at the Plaza Club, located on the 21st floor of the Frost Bank building. The cost to attend is $25 for members of the San Antonio Bar Association and Plaza Club members, and $30 for nonmem-bers. You may register online at www.sabar.org or telephone your reservation to 210.227.8822 x99. As always, space will be limited, so please RSVP early!

Red MassThe celebration of the Red Mass will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 6 p.m. at the San Fernando Cathedral. His Excellency, Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S., Archbishop of San Antonio, will officiate. All faiths are welcome. The Red Mass has been a legal and judicial tradition since the reign of King Edward III in the early 14th Century. A peculiarly English tradi-tion, its purpose was to join the ordinary and traditional celebration of the Mass to the traditions and processes of the courts and the law. In the United States, the first Red Mass was celebrated in 1928. San Antonio revived the tradition 62 years ago under the auspices of St. Mary’s University School of Law and the Catholic Lawyers Guild of San Antonio. This Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit calls upon God to grant light and inspiration to the lawyer in pleading, and to the judge in adjudicating during the coming term. All indi-viduals in the legal and judicial professions of all faiths are welcome at the Red Mass to receive God’s blessing and guidance for the coming court term.
Members of judiciary and legal organizations may join in the procession carrying a banner representing their organization into the Cathedral prior to Red Mass. Judges robe at 5 p.m. for the procession beginning at 5:45. Following the mass, meet St. Mary’s new law dean Steve Sheppard, J.S.D. at a reception at the Plaza Club in the Frost Bank Building.

Stanley Schoenbaum’sretirement after 65 years of practice
- from Schoenbaum, Curphy & Scanlan PC
Despite its ever-increasing size, San Antonio’s bar keeps a small-town collegi-ality. While the days of catching up at the Esquire Bar and similar watering holes are becoming rarer by the day, the Subpoena does an excellent job of keeping people in the loop. The Tributes section of the Sub-poena serves a unique purpose in this re-gard. It gives everyone a space to not only remember those who have passed on, but also to announce a new addition to the family or firm, recognize the person who always goes the extra mile, or give a shout out to a colleague who just reached a pro-fessional or personal milestone. And con-sidering the Subpoena reaches 3,200 people every month, the San Antonio Bar Founda-tion Tributes program, which recognizes the charitable gifts in honor of or in mem-
ory of others, is a bargain by any measure.Donations to the Foundation may be
given for all types of occasions such as birth-days, anniversaries, special achievements, graduations and memorials. The donations you give as tributes to the important people in your life will help support the charitable works of the San Antonio Bar Foundation.
Your donation will be highlighted in the Tributes section of the Subpoena, the monthly newsletter of the San Antonio Bar Association, and listed in the Foun-dation’s annual report. Notification of your tax-deductible contribution will be sent to the person you indicate.
Please visit www.sabar.org to submit a Tribute online (credit card required). For more information, contact Katie Kinder at [email protected].

The 2014 Medico~Legal Conference is coming back to San Antonio on Sep-tember 18, 2014. Conveniently located at the San Antonio Airport Hilton, the conference is a unique fusion of two dis-parate disciplines coming together for a common cause: helping our area’s aging populace safely navigate their final years with the dignity, grace, and wellness they’ve certainly earned.
Many important and timely topics will be explored at this year’s conference. The morning opens with a panel (moderat-ed by Judge Polly Jackson Spencer) explor-ing current Testing for Capacity practices. Visiting Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff will kindly share a few important words before Martha Leatherman, MD takes the stage to discuss Assessing the Capacity of Patients with Alzheimer’s. Barbara Scharf-Zeldes, JD will conclude the day’s morning sessions with her fine Ethical Consider-ations from our Contacts with Consumers. After the included lunch, Medicaid Rules Do’s and Don’ts will be presented by the popular Patty Sitchler, JD before Kelly M. Cross, JD expertly opines on Guardian-ship Update: What Legal and Medical Pro-fessionals Need to Know. Concluding the afternoon activities will see Frost Bank’s VP for Fraud Management, Sandy Sulli-van, enlighten us on the timely Fraud Trig-gers topic. Master & Mistress of Ceremo-nies for the day will be the spunky pair of Byron Cordes (SAGE Care Management) and Helen Flores (Caring Companions).
Most importantly, these talks can translate into continuing education credits for Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Physicians, Psychologists, Ac-tivity Directors, Guardians, etc. For our unique needs, lawyers can get MCLEs. The course has been approved for 7.0 hours of participatory credit and 2.0 hours of ethics. At the very least, attendees can exit with a Certificate of Attendance to use as needed. Open to — and important for — anyone in the legal profession!
Registration is quick and easy. Sim-ply download the registration form(s) at www.stgec.net or call Barbara Giles at 210.562.6560/6561 (email GilesB@uth-
scsa.edu) who’ll gladly answer all your M~L14 questions and send you registra-tion materials.
The early bird cost is just $75 per day ($100 and $125 after September 12), which covers your CE credits, parking, lunch and all snacks. This year’s event is back-to-back with the 2014 Aging Sum-mit (held Friday the 19th at the SAT Hil-
ton). Details for both events are posted to www.stgec.net. So please make plans to join us at the SAT Hilton on Thurs-day, September 18, 2014 to experience a different and special kind of continuing education that will allow you to interact with medical professionals who per-form a related job — but from another side of the fence.
