Substitute teachers are expected to assume responsibility for the discipline in their groups and to assist in the correction of all other irregularities that may occur.

Teachers should, at all times, exhibit to their pupils respectThe Student Code of Conduct containing information regarding

student discipline shall be distributed at the beginning of the school year to students, parents, teachers and administrators.

The Board prohibits the use of corporal punishment in the District. Students shall not be spanked, paddled, or otherwise physically disciplined for violations of the Student Code of Conduct.

Deal with problems “on the spot”. Don’t degrade the student in front of the class. Be sure to have all the facts and listen to both sides. Give the child the benefit of the doubt!

You must sign in and out each day you substituteAll visitors and staff are required to wear an ID Badge or Sticker

If you are not provided with a copy of the school’s emergency operations procedures manual, please request a copy from the office

Familiarize yourself with your surroundings so that you know how to evacuate the class in the event of a fire drill or other emergency

 The salary rates for substitute teachers shall be set by the Northwest Independent School District Board of Trustees and recorded in Board minutes. The rates are as follows for the 2011-2012 school year:

Professional Long Term Substitute Teaching Assignment Tiered Rate Tier One: After ten consecutive days within the same teaching assignment

No Degree or Teacher Certification $70.00/dayOne-half day (up to five hours) $50.00/day

 Degree & Teacher Certification $90.00/dayone-half day (up to five hours) $60.00/day

 Tier Two: After twenty-five consecutive days within the same teaching assignment thesubstitute must be degreed, certified, and meet the NCLB Highly Qualified Standard Degree & Teacher Certification $134.00/dayone-half day (up to five hours) $ 67.00/day * Substitutes serving in a long term teaching assignment who miss more than two consecutive days will start at the Tier One rate upon their return. * Starting Tier rate may be adjusted due to market availability for hard-to fill positions and must be approved by the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, Executive Director of Personnel Services, or Executive Director of Human Resources.* Substitutes who serve in consecutive long term assignments without a break in service within the same school year may be eligible to retain their current Tier rate.

Professional Long Term Temporary Teaching Assignment – Vacant or GrowthSubstitutes assigned to a vacant or growth long-term teaching assignment with 90 full days or greater remaining in the school year must possess a Texas Teacher Certification and may be paid at a rate equal to the daily rate of a first year teacher regardless of the substitute’s years of experience and may be eligible for benefits but no contract will be offered. (The rate of pay may be adjusted due to market availability for hard-to fill positions and must be approved by the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, Executive Director of Personnel Services, or Executive Director of Human Resources.)

Professional/Administrative Daily or Professional/Administrative Long Term Substitute Non-teaching Assignments

Substitute rates of pay for non-teaching professional or administrative positions will be established prior to services rendered with no tiered rating scheme and must be approved by the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, Executive Director of Personnel Services, or Executive Director of Human Resources.

Paraprofessional Assignment Daily or Long Term Substitute RateThe daily rate for paraprofessional assignments is the same regardless of the substitute’s credentials (ie. degree or certification) with no tiered rating scheme. Educational Aide $60.00/day

one-half day (up to five hours) $40.00/day Classroom Special Educational Aide $70.00/day

one-half day (up to five hours) $50.00/day

Handling Illness and Accidents

Do not touch a student where he/she is bleeding, even if you use gloves. Provide the student with tissue or paper towels, instructing them to hold it on their woundIf appropriate, send the student to the nurse’s office for further care. If the situation is an emergency, dial 911 and notify the office immediatelyDo not administer medicine of any kind to students (no aspirin, cough medicine, prescription or non-prescription drugs)

The account is to be used only for educational and administrative purposes. You are responsible for not sharing the account password with others. You will be held responsible at all times for the proper use of your account, and the District may suspend or revoke your access if you violate the rules. amounts of time or by falling asleep in the classroom Making sexually or racially inappropriate oral/written comments or

displaying inappropriate graphic or physical conduct, or subjecting students to racial or sexual harassment

Using alcohol or unlawful drugs on school premises Insubordination Willful violation of school rules/regulations Willful refusal to follow instructions and or lesson plans left by the

classroom or 3 exclusions from NISD Campus Substitute Evaluation Forms 90 days of in-activity Failure to substitute at 3 or more NISD Campuses Any other inappropriate behavior
