as well. In the event of an emergency, please take out the emergency bag, room # sign and take students out to the far grass area just beyond the blacktop. Please give each student, their health tag, (that is a way to check to see who is missing) or check class roster in bag.

Welcome to Room 17 at Eisenhower Elementary. The wonderful kids in this class are in 4th and 5th grade. They each have their own qualities that make them wonderful and unique. David Blair (Room 16) and Grady Wright (Room 15) are the other 4th grade teachers. If you need something, please don’t hesitate to call them. Use the black phone (ext. 44215 or 44216). **5th Graders are currently at Science Camp this week so you will have 4th graders. However two 5th grade students from another class will be joining Room 17 for the day as they are not going to Science Camp. Their teachers sent them with work. They can sit at an empty desk. If they run out of things to do, I made extra copies of the 4th grade activities and they can just complete the activities if they need something to do.

Our classroom management system is based upon signals. To get students attention I say, “Ready to Rock” and they respond with “Read to Roll” I also will clap 5 times and students repeat this clap. Then I have their attention and share with them what I need them to do. I also give out brownie points/table points for excellent behavior-Table points are for the tables that are listening and Brownie points are earned if the whole class is focusing/working. Each child receives 1 warning, if behavior is not corrected they are to go to the back of the room and record their behavior in the Behavior Log. They will write down what happened. If they have to go back a 2nd time they will again write down what happened and grab an orange behavior slip found inside the book. They are to take this home and get it signed by an adult. They are to bring it back tomorrow. You can reward excellent behavior with free time in the class (play games, read a book, draw a picture…).

Please pick up students at our classroom pole, which is located on the edge of the playground blacktop. You will see students lining up, our pole is about 3 poles down from the drinking fountain (near last basketball court) when you are facing the playground. Please pick up students and walk them to our door.

For example they might put “I am a good listener, I have great reading comprehension..” For the things they need to work on they might put, “I need to raise my hand, I need to check my work…” Share with them that right now they are going to get ready for computer lab by filling the web in class. That way when they get to the lab all they have to do is type in what they wrote. They are to choose 3 things they want to work on and three things they do well at school. You can brainstorm ideas as a class.

When students are finished filling out their web they may take out their “Op Art” and complete that. If they are through with their “Op Art” students may get a piece of plain white drawing paper and free draw-no paper airplanes or paper objects that fly.

Welcome to Room 17 at Eisenhower Elementary. The wonderful kids in this class are in 4th grade. They each have their own qualities that make them wonderful, colorful and unique. Grady Wright (Room 15)is another 4th grade teacher. If you need something, please don’t hesitate to call him. Use the black phone (ext. 44215).

Page 67: Substitute Teacher Plans

Our classroom management system is based upon signals. To get students attention I say, “All set?” and they respond with “You bet!” I also will clap 5 times and students repeat this clap. Then I have their attention and share with them what I need them to do. I also give out gold for excellent behavior-students put gold in a pouch in their desk. Each child receives 1 warning, if behavior is not corrected they are to receive a behavior slip (they are on my desk. The student fills that out and takes it home to be signed. Also near the behavior slips are a list of consequences of what will happen if behavior continues-so please look at that. Consequences are typed out on an orange poster. I don’t forsee any problems but please expect excellent behavior from my class (good listeners, work complete/neat, and a positive attitude). You can reward excellent behavior with free time in the class (play games, read a book, draw a picture…) and gold.

**Don’t hesitate to have a student work at the back table by themselves if they are having a difficult time working at their table group because they are talking.

**Some students work at a slower pace. So please just have them turn in what they finished and I will work with them to complete the activity.

12:00-12:45 Lunch Students will be eating lunch outside during this time.

*****If it is raining-lunch will be from 12:00-1:00. Students will play inside the classroom from 12:00-12:20. There is a box of games under my desk, they can also draw, read, build with blocks or talk with friends. Please stay inside with them and supervise. At 12:20 please dismiss students to get hot lunch. Other students will get their lunch box and sit and eat. All students need to be seated while eating. All trash should be thrown outside. At 12:45 students can clean up and have the last couple of minutes to continue playing. There will be yard duty walking down the halls if you should need something. Leave the door open.

Page 68: Substitute Teacher Plans

12:45-(If not raining) Please pick up my students by our classroom pole which is located near the blacktop. They will be coming in from eating lunch. Ask them to come in quietly and have a seat.

12:45-1:30 Read Skylark/Answer QuestionsPlease share with students that they will read the story Skylark from their blue English book. Please dismiss one table group at a time to go and grab an English book (they are located next to the sink, behind the round table). Have student turn to page 689. Please ask for volunteers to read the story out loud as the class follows along in their book. I will leave the Teacher’s Edition for you so you can follow along as well. When finished reading, have students complete the activity packets. The activities packets go along with the story Skylark. Please have students complete the activities quietly at their own seat.

1:30-2:15 P.E.A few minutes before 1:30 please have students stop working and get lined up for P.E. Please walk the students out to P.E. on the blacktop. If it is raining, P.E. class may be held in the GLC. You can have one student walk ahead and check to see where Mrs. Scott will be holding P.E. if you do not see her on the blacktop. Once you drop students off with Mrs. Scott, you now have Prep Time. I will leave some papers to grade if you have time during this Prep Period. You do not need to be out at P.E. with them because Mrs. Scott is a credentialed teacher. If Mrs. Scott is absent and does not have a sub but her aide is present than you need to stay with the students during P.E. as the instructional aide is not credentialed. Thank you!

2:15-2:45 Enterprise Weekly At 2:15 please go out and pick up students from P.E. Please have students come back in and sit down. If they are finished with the Skylark activities they can turn them into the “Finished Work” basket. For those students not finished they can continue working through the activities. For those students who are finished, please given them an Enterprise Weekly math sheet. Students will quietly complete this sheet the best they can on their own. I will

Page 69: Substitute Teacher Plans

leave the answer key for you. If time permits, you can correct the Enterprise Weekly sheet as a class. Call on volunteers to share their answers and share how they solved the problems. Again, finished sheets can go into the “Finished Work” basket.

2:50-3:05 Jobs/Pack UpPleas have students complete their classroom jobs, which are located on the gray filing cabinet. Once students are finished with their jobs share with them they are to clean up around their desk space. If there is still time, I will leave a book to read for the last few minutes.

3:05-DimissalAt 3:05 please dismiss students one table group at a time to go home.

Thank you again for your time! Please leave me a note about the day. Thank you!

****Please make sure the doors are locked and all Lunch and Ball Tubs are brought inside. Thank you!!!

on the outfield-continue this pattern until all students have a place to go. PLEASE BE THE PITCHER. Roll ball underhand and student will kick it and run to first base. All students will kick one time before teams switch. At 12:00, please stop-have students help collect bases and ball and head back to get a drink. Please return bases and ball to closet and make sure closet is closed behind you. Then please head back to class.

***Other options for P.E. if you do not want to do kick ball-kids can have free choice…play on upper grade play structure, and at green ball wall (they must stay on the upper grade side of the playground). They can use our classroom balls.

If it is too warm…kids can stay inside and play board games that are in the red tub by our class library. I will

Page 71: Substitute Teacher Plans

also leave the “Banangrams” game as well. This is played just like scrabble where the kids build words.

12:00-12:25- MATH BINGOPlease give each student one game board and give each table group a pile of red circle markers they can share to mark their game board. Please read the white cards out loud twice. Example- “B 9 X 2.” Students will then have to look for the number 18 in the “B” column on their board. If they find 18 under the B column they can put a marker. The student who fills up a row will say Bingo. There may be time to play 2 rounds. Students can switch boards after each round. 12:45-1:30 Book Clubs At 12:30 please have the Line king and Queen line up at the door. Next have students line up one row at a time. Walk students out to the red path way-have cold lunchers continue to walk(they must walk) to lunch and please walk hot lunchers to the cafeteria. Please stay with students until your class has walked inside the cafeteria to get their lunch. Once they are inside you can leave.

****Miranda and Catherine are on Student Council and right after lunch they have to go to each classroom and collect water bottles so they will be late coming into the class after lunch.

1:30-Please share with the students that they will think about one thing that they wish they had a chance to do. Ask them to think for a few minutes and then ask them to share with a neighbor. Ask for volunteers to share what they wish they had a chance to do (ex. I wish I had a chance to travel to China, I wish I had a chance to learn how to play golf, I wish I had a chance to meet the president…) Next, have the distributors pass out the “I wish I had a chance to” papers to each student. Share with students they are going to write about their wish on this sheet. There are lines on the front and back of the paper. Please share with them that

Page 72: Substitute Teacher Plans

they are to use complete sentences, interesting language and write as much as they can. When they are finished they are to illustrate and color a picture in the box that goes along with their writing.***I will leave a Time for Kids magazine for each student and an activity to go with it that students can work on if they are early finishers.

2:00-2:15 JobsAll students are to complete their classroom jobs and pack up their things.

2:15-3:05 Computer Lab A little bit before 2:15 walk the students to the computer lab. Students will take their backpacks with them.

Have students leave their backpacks on the carpet outside of the computer lab. If the computer lab is locked send a student to the office to get the key to unlock it. Before students walk into the lab please share with them that they are to go directly to their computer, sit down, and work on “Type to Learn.” “Type to Learn” is a keyboarding program and students will work on this till about 2:35. At around 2:35 have students close Type to Learn.

Next, share with them that they will continue working on their Title page for the author report. We already started this last week. Students were asked to type their author’s name, their name and the date. They are to also incorporate pictures on the title page (a picture of their author, and they can also include a picture of one of their author’s books). We go to google, type in the author’s name, click images and pictures should show up. The kids know how to drag a picture to their word document.

*They click on the image they want, drag it to the desktop (blue screen on their computer), then click on the picture they put on their desktop and drag into word.

Page 73: Substitute Teacher Plans

They should have 1-2 pictures. Students will follow the steps below to open up the title page they have been working on. (If they can’t find their title page, then they can just start again). Please read outloud…“With mouse click on”-GO-Connect to server -Click on server number that ends in 04-Click connect -Choose Rm 14 globe-Choose Rm 14-Click on the blue folder that says “Author Report”-Click on their name-Continue working on their title page

**Share with early finishers that they can go to Kid Pix or freerice.com.

In order to save work students need to click on “File”, then “Save As”

Then students need to make sure they have clicked on the “Room 14 globe”, type their name in the save box if it is not already their, then they will click “Save”

It might ask do you want to replace? Students will click Replace

Students can help each other save!

At 2:50 have students stop, and close programs. DO NOT SHUT DOWN COMPUTERS. They are only going to close programs that are opened, straighten their keyboards, chairs and mouse. You may dismiss them when you are ready. Have them walk out to get backpacks and they can go. Please SHUT OFF LIGHTS AND MAKE SURE ALL DOORS ARE LOCKED BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE LAB. The

Page 74: Substitute Teacher Plans

emergency exit door should be closed (please just pull on it to make sure it closed all the way) and the two doors at the entrance of the lab (the doors with the windows) should be shut and locked. The open door to the server room should remain open. It is the door right next to the large printer, and metal filing cabinet.

Thank you so much for your help today!!! Please leave notes about the day.

Thank you for your time!

Share with students that their park must meet all of the requirements on the given sheet. Please ask students to pull out their Orange Geometry Vocabulary books in their desk. Share with them that they can use this book to help them remember what the different geometry terms are. Please have volunteers pass out the plain white copy paper. Share with students that they can use this paper as a rough draft sheet as they sketch out their ideas. Brainstorm with students some things you might find in a park (ex. Swings, slide, small pond, path to ride bikes, trees, skate ramps…). Give students time to sketch out their ideas on the plain white paper. When students are finished sketching out their rough draft ideas please hand them the white construction paper. Share with students their final design will be completed on the white construction paper. Please ask them to use color on their final design-they can use crayons, colored pencils, or markers on the final draft. Please ask them to come up with a name for their park and put that name at the top of their paper.
