New Ogden Chief of Policeto be sworn-in June 10by Kristina Gabalski
Sergeant Christopher Mears will be sworn-in during the Ogden Town Board meeting Wednesday, June 10. Mears is a 20-year veteran of the Police Department and will replace Chief Douglas Nordquist who served in the position for 11 years and with the Monroe Coun-ty Sheriff s Office for 30 years.
Im stepping into the biggest of shoes, Sergeant Mears says, Chief Nordquist did a phenomenal job de-veloping the culture at the police department. Hes a hard person to follow.
Sergeant Mears says Chief Nordquist brought every-one in the department together and also brought the department together with the community and with other departments in the town.
Its hard to think about going into work and him not being there, Sergeant Mears says. Im really excited to get started, but I will really miss Chief Nordquist.
Sergeant Mears has spent most of his 20 years - 17 to be exact - working on the night shift and also served as a K-9 officer for a couple of years, he says.
In 2009, he attended the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, for ten weeks.
It was one of the highlights of my career so far, Sergeant Mears says. The professional development course included training in areas such as leadership, communications, forensic science and even behavioral science.
Chief Nordquist has been working with Sergeant Mears to prepare him to step into the roll of chief.
He has made me as ready as I can be, Sergeant Mears says. I will be modeling Chief Nordquists be-havior. Hes gotten me ready and Im really excited to get in there.
Ogden Town Supervisor Gay Lenhard says she is con-fident the community will be very receptive to Mears leadership and community involvement.
Im very excited about working with our new chief, Chris Mears, Supervisor Lenhard says. I have known him for the past 20 years and am impressed with his devotion to our community. I know that he is anxious to have the opportunity to interact with our residents and business owners.
Sergeant Mears says he has lived in the village the entire time he has worked for the department and he and his family feel very much a part of the community. I feel its an asset, I really do, he observes about knowing the people he serves both professionally and personally. Its a big help, you see people as people. If you know a persons background you can be more fair.
He notes that Ogden/Spencerport community is known for the cooperation between both town and vil-lage governments as well as the communitys emer-gency services. You would be hard-pressed to find two municipalities that work so well together, he says.
He adds that he doesnt plan any major changes to the department. The ship is sailing very well now, he

says, but notes that law enforcement problems on the national level will likely have an impact here at some point. He foresees officers with body-worn cameras, for example.
Video taping of police is a benefit to both sides, Ser-geant Mears says. It encourages law enforcement to act more reasonably.
He says the police department will continue to keep close ties to the community with officers visible out-side of patrol cars, walking the village and at various events.
When they get out of their cars and talk to people, everybody benefits, Sergeant Mears says.
Churchville-Chilis 2015 Community Music Fest June 7
For almost 20 years, families in the Churchville-Chili community have been coming together to enjoy the Com-munity Music Fest, a one-day celebration of great perfor-mances from C-CCSD school music ensembles of all ages, combined with special guest performances, family fun, games, entertainment and the famous Churchville Lions Club Chicken Barbecue. Kendall Recreationhas grownDear Kendall Community,
After 26 years of serving the residents of Kendall as Recreation Director, I am at this time submitting my res-ignation. This has not been an easy decision for me, be-cause it has been an extreme pleasure watching and help-ing the town and its residents grow. Ive seen the youth of this community grow from toddlers standing at the T-ball plate for the first time into those adults who are now step-ping up to coach their own children at that same plate.
Throughout the years I have been grateful to have the backing and support of the community and its governing body in helping me build and tailor the recreational pro-grams to the needs and wants they have expressed. In a small part, this department has helped participants learn and hone their athletic skills and witnessed how they have carried these skills into the school sports arena with great success.
I am proud of the accomplishments we have achieved over the years and I look forward to supporting the con-tinued efforts of this department.

6 Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - May 31, 2015A little Wheel Fest Cruise-In history
The first event was born on June 13, 1998. It was a spin off of the Hamlin Com-munity Days, which ended a few years prior. The Wheel Fest is a not for profit or-ganization with all fees or donations used to cover cruise-in expenses. Any left over funds are donated to Hamlins many civic groups. This year, the funds are designat-ed to the Hamlin VFW Post #6703 to help purchase a gazebo.
The first year was a small event. The Cruise-In had 12 vehicles in attendance. Since then it has increased to a consistent event with 160 to 200 vehicles annually. The vehicles are very diverse in nature. Past events have included: motorcycles, restored tractors, drag cars, Sprint Cup stock car, go-karts, snowmobiles, hot rods, classics, antiques, low riders, monster trucks, daily drivers, trailer queens and others. The event attracts approximately 3,000 to 4,000 spectators throughout the day.
In 2006, the WNY Antique Boat and Mo-tor Club became a regular display. They have participants come from as far away as Syracuse. The old boats and motors are a great addition to the cruise.
Sponsors come from near and far: New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio. Many have been participants for over 15 years.
In 2007, a 28 travel trailer donated to the Cruise Crew was transformed into a combo-registration center, bandstand, pa-rade float, rolling billboard and command station.
Every Cruise-In starts off with the sing-ing of the National Anthem, with local Girl, Boy and Cub Scouts providing Flag Honor Guards. The event is wrapped up about four hours later with the awards ceremony. Traditionally, 14 awards are earned by participants.
In 2004, Wheel Fest Cruise-In was picked as one of the best Cruise-Ins in the nation by Hemmings Motor News.
To keep things fresh, the cruise crew is always looking for new ideas and items to enhance the event. Some things we have had over the years are: vehicle-related vendors, new car displays, vintage pedal car, kids bicycle show, local police and State Police displays.
2015 marks the 18th year of the Cruise-In. This year the event will be held at the Hamlin Fire Department field near the Fire Hall. A Special Thanks to the Ham-lin Fire Department for the use of their facilities.
As usual, the Cruise-In is held in con-junction with the Hamlin Wheel Fest Fes-tival which runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on June 6.
There are many things to entertain the young and the not so young. Among them are: Silent Auctions, School Bands, Kids Corner, Musical Entertainment on the Main Stage, Crafters, I Got It game, Horseshoe Tournament, lots of food ven-dors and displays.
A gigantic fireworks display caps off the day.
For information call Gary 964-2935 or Kathi 964-2421. Food booths are $60, Craft Booths are $50 and Cruise-In spots are $5.

go to his neighbors, the Dabneys and the Ryans for their support and help throughout his illness, as well as Dr. Hus-sain and his nurse, Mary Jo Mele. John was happiest when he could be outdoors in the warmth and sunshine whether it was gardening, caring for the lawn and flowerbeds or just puttering in the barn. His creativity was put to good use in caring for his family, his home and the land around it. When not busy at home, out came the golf clubs to enjoy. Golf was his favorite past time. For 23 years, he and his wife spent their winters in Florida where they owned a home in Outdoor Resorts of Orlando; where golf-ing was his joy along with playing cards with his Florida friends. John had served in United States Army and was a current member of the American Legion, Disciples United Methodist Church and in the Seniors Golf League at Hickory Ridge. Calling hours were Tuesday May 12th, from 4:30 PM to 7 PM at the Disciples United Methodist Church on Holley-By-ron Rd. (Rt. 237) in Clarendon, NY, where a funeral service was held at 7:00 PM with the Pastor, Rev. Jack Laskowski officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the fam-ily.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Johns
name to: Hospice of Orleans County, P.O. Box# 489, Albion, NY 14411. Or to: the Disciples United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Please sign the online register book at: www.merrillgrinnell.com
