Business Matters April 2011

Ready, Set, Launch! -By Jodie A. Perry, IOM, President & CEO

As you may know, the Greece Chamber of Commerce and our sister organization, Greece Chamber Charitable Foundation, started a wonderful new partnership with our local schools this year. Our Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) has been in session since late November with 8 intrepid students from Greece & Hilton Schools participating.

The students are just over halfway through the process of setting up their own real businesses. We have taken them through idea generation and vetting and they have each written a complete business plan. The next step in the process is for them to pitch their ideas to a group of Investors that we have assembled at our April Investor Panel event.

I want to personally invite you to attend this Investor Panel event on Wednesday, April 13th. There will be a short reception starting at 5:30pm in the foyer of the Athena Performing Arts Center and the panel event will run from 6-8:00pm that evening. The students will each have 6 minutes to “sell” their idea to these investors who are giving real money to help them achieve their dream.

I’ve been involved with this program on some level since I came to the Chamber in late 2006. This year I am directly involved serving as the Program Manager for this location. The business community has been wonderfully supportive of these entrepreneurs in training and I am looking forward to the highlight of the year – the Investor Panel.

Even if you can only stay for part of the time, I hope you will consider joining us and being impressed by how much a high school student can accomplish when they put their mind to it! Our wonderful volunteer teachers Diane Hennekey (Edward Jones) and Roz Brooks (EFP Rotenburg) have invested endless amounts of time and energy in helping these students get ready for this exciting evening! Bring a friend and prepare to be amazed!

MEMBER TESTIMONIAL (Small Business Success Series)

Just want to thank you (and the Chamber) for arranging these seminars on topics so important to businesses.

Nestor Ramos’s presentation this morning on writing press releases was absolutely outstanding. He highlighted how important building

relationships is to becoming a successful business, which is a message so prevalent today. He also provided many guidelines on how to develop

these relationships with the press, as well as writing an effective release. All invaluable information. I have found this seminar series to be a

wonderful avenue for continual learning and to fine tune my business skills, and I look forward to attending other programs in the future.

Thanks!! -Jen Ulrich, Answers to Organizing Page 6

Did you know that every year, more that 1,500 people receive kidneys, livers and hearts that have been donated for transplantation. That still leaves more than 8,000 people in NY alone still on waiting lists. The need for organ donations far exceeds the supply.

Did you know that one person who donates organs (hearts, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines) can save up to eight lives, while a tissue donor (corneas, bone, skin, heart valves, tendons, veins, etc) can improve 12 or more lives by restoring eyesight, helping fight infections in burn patients and preventing the loss of mobility and disability.

Despite continuing effort at public education, misconceptions still persist. Here are some facts to help you better understand organ donation:

• Anyone can be a potential donor regardless of age, race or medical history.

• All major regions in the United States support organ and tissue donation and see it as the final act of love an d generosity towards others.

• If you are sick or injured and admitted to the hospital, the number one priority is to save your life. Donation can only be considered after you are deceased.

• When you are on the waiting list for an organ, what really counts is the severity of your illness, time spent waiting, blood type, and other important medical information, not your financial status or celebrity status.

• An open casket funeral is possible for organ and tissue donors. The body is treated with care, respect and dignity through the whole process.

• There is not cost to the donor of the their family for organ or tissue donation.

Consider the possibility to have power to Donate Life! There are several organizations that promote and support organ donation. We have listed them for you:

According to the Federal Trade Commission, nearly 10 million people have fallen victim of identity theft annually, costing consumers $5 billion in out-of-pocket losses and businesses $48 billion. On average victims spent almost 300 million hours - or an average of 30 hours per person- correcting their records and " reclaiming their good names."

Here are some tips that can help you minimize identity theft. It will not prevent it but if you take action steps it could reduce the risk of having your identity stolen:

1. Do not share personal information unnecessarily through the Internet, telephone or face-to-face discussions and transactions. Know your surroundings and be aware someone could be taking your personal information.

2. Do not discard any personal documents that contain information that can be used to steal you identity. Make a habit of shredding all receipts, insurance information, anything that has your name on it. Even the advertisements that come in the mail with name and address.

3. Do not sign your credit cards but write " check id" on the signature line to deter thieves from using your lost or stolen cards.

4. Do not carry unnecessary documents in your wallet. Keep your Social Security cards, passports, and extra credit cards in a safe locked place. Did you know your most sensitive numbers to your social security number are your last 4 digits?

5. Use a Post Office Box or locked mail box if possible. Never leave out going mail with checks in your mailbox instead go to the Post office for your outgoing mail. Leaving the red flag tells someone you have outgoing mail and it could be your bill or insurance claim.
