IIT HIGHLIGHTS

IIT Delhi administrators and business services personnel are confident that the Ingres database applications they use every day will consistently deliver the performance they need – Ingres makes their jobs easier with secure and efficient applications that support critical administrative functions such as student grading, finance, human resources, procurement, hospital administration, and other applications. With the open source version of Ingres Database, IIT Delhi gains access to a range of new features, and enhancements in performance in particular. Ultimately, the new web-based self-service applications being developed with Ingres Consolidated Application Foundation for Eclipse (CAFÉ) shall reach a greater volume of users, and reduce costs through the more efficient use of staff.

CHaLLenGe

As one of the oldest and most respected engineering educational institutes in India, employing more than 3,000 people, IIT Delhi needs reliable systems that support its diverse community of students, educators, and administrative end users. The institute developed a series of mission-critical administrative and business applications designed to support a range of in-house intranet applications. IIT Delhi anticipated efficiencies in transaction processing and reporting – yet only a fraction of staff were regularly using many of the applications.

Intent on enhancing the usability and efficiency of its key applications, IIT Delhi turned to Ingres Database, the leading enterprise-class open source database, and is looking at Ingres CAFÉ to build web-based, easy-to-use, self-service applications that would encourage greater use among end users. Professor Ashvin K. Gosain, Head of Administrative Computerisation Support Services (ACSS) at IIT Delhi, says, “Our goal was to build an application infrastructure that can be developed and maintained easily, provide high-availability with rare downtime, as well as accommodate greater complexity and an ever-growing volume of data.” Additionally, in adopting the open source database solution, IIT Delhi hoped to gain efficiencies in performance and reduced cost of ownership.

“We needed to move to a systems-based operation, reducing bottlenecks that can result from undue dependence on any one person,” explains Gosain. “Most of all, we wanted to streamline our application infrastructure and reduce the redundancies and duplicate activities in our system.”

IIT Delhi was already familiar with the benefits of the robust, enterprise-strength technology of Ingres since it has been using Ingres products from the beginning.

IIT Delhi first adopted Ingres Database for several administrative applications, and then began upgrading all its applications onto that version. In addition to Ingres Database, IIT Delhi uses an array of related Ingres products that includes Ingres Report Writer for reporting and, for professional support, Ingres Enterprise Support Services. “Ingres support has helped us significantly both onsite from Ingres Corporation’s local India offices as well as from its global support centers,” says Gosain.

Adopting an open source solution was highly appealing for IIT Delhi. “We decided to move to the open source version of Ingres Database in order to leverage its most recent features, such as improvements in performance and efficiency, web enablement and also to take advantage of the low cost of ownership associated with open source,” says the professor. “We started using open source solutions with the adoption of Ingres Database. We are now considering other open source technologies as well for adoption.”

ReSuLTS

Throughout the upgrade, Ingres support assisted the institute considerably, both onsite and remotely from the company’s worldwide network of support centers. “Of late, Ingres

support has been very responsive to us,” Gosain says. “Ingres has helped us significantly both onsite from its local India offices as well from its global support centers. We are now able to receive support onsite at very short notice.”

Automated administrative functions reduce dependency on staff and promote greater agility for IIT Delhi’s ongoing management of mission-critical applications. According to Gosain, “Almost all of the administrative functions and staff are computer-dependent, so we have been able to move to a systems-based operation, reducing the dependence on a particular person. Further, our web-based self-service applications will empower the end users to get information whenever and wherever they desire.”

On implementation of the total system, the end users shall have the capability to access transactional data details as well as summarized reports. In addition, the move to the open source version of Ingres Database has opened the door to cost savings and capabilities associated with open source, enabling IIT Delhi to explore and build web-based applications that will dramatically expand user volume beyond the 600 administrative users who are currently on the system.

The professor notes that adopting open source will benefit the institute in terms of low total cost of ownership – in part due to the lack of licensing fees but also because of the efficiencies

built in to the Ingres Database. “Since Ingres-based applications and databases are very easy to maintain, we are already seeing significant savings in technical resource deployment. We further anticipate similar benefits on a greater scale with the development and deployment of new applications on the open source Ingres platform,” says Gosain.
